Chapter 1166: The Four Legions
General Yue channeled her Qi to tear a localized spatial rift and stepped through the swirling energy to personally guide the bulk of the army to their current location. The Worldkeeper needed his forces deployed with exact precision and his closest confidant was the best person to orchestrate their arrival.
Zhan Tian and the remaining generals waited in the void while preparing themselves for the battle ahead. While they were confident in their victory from what they had seen so far, they were also battle hardened warriors. They would not let anything get to their heads and approached this like any other battle and with their full attention. They just needed to wait and coordinate with Yue so they could all appear at the same time at the location extracted by the Silent Night.
Once the designated moment arrived, Zhan Tian raised his hand and sliced the empty space with his glaive. A dark rift tore open and stabilized instantly as the strike force stepped through the spatial doorway and crossed the vast distance in a single breath before emerging at their true target.
Li Yu stepped out of the rift and took a slow breath as the main headquarters of the enemy branch came into full view. The organic structure was a sprawling monstrosity that rivaled the size of a floating continent or perhaps even bigger. It drifted silently in the void between realms like a grotesque landmass forged from hardened bone and pulsing purple flesh. Rivers of glowing green fluid pumped across the surface and fed into thousands of exposed breeding pools. The pools bubbled with a foul energy as Li Yu could see young Hollow Husk creatures crawling out of the slime to join the countless ranks of their kin.
The true terror of the base was not just its great size but the staggering number of defenders swarming around it. Millions of squid creatures floated in the void forming dense defensive clouds that blotted out the distant realm lights. They were training and preparing for their next mission. They wielded various different weapons that seemed to be made out of organic matter but were just as strong as any metal while their tentacles writhed in a collective frenzy.
"Their numbers are far greater than I anticipated," Elder Huo Zheng remarked while scanning the endless sea of enemies. "The horde we fought inside the zone possessed stronger fighters and terrifying commanders but they never fielded a swarm of this magnitude. They are breeding at an unnatural rate at least compared to what we have seen."
"They have been consuming isolated realms and this branch of their species is different." Zhan Tian offered an explanation while his sharp eyes analyzed the enemy formations. "It would seem that they sacrifice personal strength to multiply their numbers and overwhelm realms through sheer attrition. Of course they have strong people as well. A swarm of this size could bury an empire under a mountain of bodies and then the stronger ones can clean up afterwards. It is a good thing we tracked them down before they grew any larger."
The void behind the strike force suddenly groaned as a grand spatial gate tore open. General Yue had timed her arrival flawlessly. The rift expanded for miles across the dark space and illuminated the area with a brilliant light as there was no hiding the scale of this attack. The personal army of the Worldkeeper did not need constructs or vessels to traverse the void because they were strong cultivators capable of enduring the harsh environment on their own.
Legions of elite soldiers marched out of the portal in strict unison and stepped directly onto the empty air. They wore dark iron armor trimmed with silver and their weapons gleamed with a cold lethal intent. There were no chaotic battle cries or disorganized charges here. The soldiers moved with a terrifying discipline forged through centuries of warfare under Zhan Tian. Thousands of warriors arranged themselves into distinct battle groups across the void and were ready for the task at hand. The oppressive martial aura of the gathered army pressed against the darkness and forced the chaotic spatial storms in the area to calm down around them.
The Hollow Husk swarm reacted to the sudden intrusion with a chorus of deafening shrieks. Millions of squid creatures surged forward like a dark tidal wave intent on drowning the invaders in flesh and bone.
Zhan Tian raised his glaive and pointed the heavy blade toward the organic continent. "Legion Commanders take your positions and form up! Show these beasts the true wrath of the Myriad Realms while our generals and I carve a path to their leaders."
The Legion Commanders stepped to the forefront of their respective battalions and barked sharp orders that echoed across the void. The troops synchronized their breathing and linked their vast Qi together through a series of ancient formation techniques. Linking thousands of souls into a single avatar required exceptional discipline and any mistake would cause the energy to collapse but Zhan Tian had trained these soldiers well over countless campaigns.
The void trembled as the first formation manifested on the eastern flank. The commanding officer directed his thousands of cultivators to channel their power into the Azure Wyrm Heavenly Formation. A towering dragon composed of crackling blue lightning and roaring water laws materialized in the dark space. The energy beast spanned several miles in length and its scales glowed with a blinding brilliance. The soldiers positioned inside the array acted as the bones and meridians of the wyrm while the Legion Commander stood at the core to direct its fury.
On the southern front another battalion locked their Qi to form the Vermillion Phoenix Ashen Formation. A blazing avian entity erupted from the darkness and bathed the void in a searing crimson light. The Vermillion Phoenix beat its giant wings and generated waves of sacred fire that burned hot enough to melt most things in its path. The heat alone forced the frontline of the Hollow Husk swarm to recoil in pain as the temperature in the void spiked dangerously high.
The western flank anchored their energy to summon the White Tiger Slaughtering Formation. A giant feline beast forged from metallic Qi and tearing typhoons roared into existence. The White Tiger radiated a sharp killing intent that pierced the minds of the alien defenders and made even them hesitate. Its claws were composed of concentrated wind blades capable of shredding anything they touched and its eyes burned with a cold silver light.
The final legion held the center line to form the Black Turtle Aegis Formation. An unbreakable turtle entity carrying a winding serpent upon its back settled into the void like a sinking mountain. The Black Turtle generated intense gravity wells and thick defensive shields that stabilized the main army line. The deep hum of its manifestation rattled the bones of the charging squid creatures and distorted the space around it.
The Four Divine Beasts stood ready and the scale of the battle elevated to a grand theater of cultivation warfare. The energy avatars represented the pinnacle of army level combat and they charged into the endless swarms of Hollow Husk fodder with breathtaking destruction while the eight generals fought independently.
The Azure Wyrm Heavenly Formation struck first. The towering beast swept its giant tail across the void and released a sweeping tide of lightning that chained through the enemy ranks. Tens of thousands of squid creatures were vaporized in an instant as the blue thunder roasted their rubbery bodies and shattered their bone armor. The wyrm opened its majestic jaws and fired a concentrated beam of water laws that carved a deep trench straight through the center of the alien swarm. The power of the attack left a lingering trail of frozen mist in its wake.
The Hollow Husk forces tried to swarm the Azure Wyrm by latching onto its glowing scales with their tentacles. They stabbed their bone spears into the energy construct but the soldiers inside the array rotated their Qi to generate a repelling shockwave under the direction of their Legion Commander. The defensive pulse threw the alien attackers off the dragon and sent them spiraling into the dark space where they were quickly crushed by the churning water laws.

On the southern flank the Vermillion Phoenix Ashen Formation brought a different kind of ruin. The blazing bird soared above the alien swarm and rained down feathers of condensed fire. Each feather exploded upon impact and created localized domains of flame that consumed thousands of enemies in roaring infernos. The Legion Commander directed the flames to target the dense clusters of troops attempting to flank the main army.
The sacred fire crashed into the squid creatures and boiled their dark blood in seconds. The Hollow Husk commanders tried to project physical illusions to hide their troop movements but the intense light of the Vermillion Phoenix burned away all illusions and exposed their true positions to the burning ash.
The western flank became a meat grinder under the relentless assault of the White Tiger Slaughtering Formation. The metallic beast charged directly into the thickest concentration of enemies and unleashed a flurry of claw strikes. Every swipe generated hundreds of crescent wind blades that acted like flying guillotines throughout the area. The wind blades sliced through the rubbery flesh and tough cartilage of the alien defenders with effortless precision and disregard.
The beast even leaped across the void and crushed a group of alien defenders beneath its heavy paws. The tearing typhoons surrounding the tiger sucked in the surrounding fodder and shredded them into a fine mist of dark blood and bone fragments. The soldiers inside the array pushed their killing intent to the maximum and allowed the White Tiger to rampage without mercy.
The enemy swarm realized they could not defeat the offensive avatars and focused their desperation on the center line which seemed more calm and less dangerous. Tens of thousands of Hollow Husk creatures hurled themselves at the Black Turtle Aegis Formation in a frenzied attempt to break the army in half. They fired a relentless barrage of techniques and corrosive acid but the attacks simply splashed against the impenetrable shields generated by the turtle.
The Legion Commander in charge of the center slammed his Qi into the core of the formation and the Black Turtle released a pulse of crushing pressure. The void warped around the formation and thousands of charging squid creatures were suddenly flattened into unrecognizable paste by the immense pressure. The serpent coiled around the turtle shell lunged forward and snapped its ethereal jaws to devour whole battalions of attackers in a single bite and turned some of the Qi eaten this way back into the formation to further sustain itself.
While the army held the line and decimated the endless swarm, Zhan Tian and his generals launched their own independent assault that was no less spectacular. They were a spearhead aimed directly at the heart of the organic fortress and the truly important targets. They did not need to worry about the millions of fodder creatures because the Four Divine Beasts kept the swarm occupied and cleared a path through the void.
Eighth General Draken laughed a booming laugh and swung his battleaxe to cleave a stray squid creature in half. The weapon drank the spilled blood and radiated a violent crimson aura as he charged toward the fortress walls. General Ghost was the only one that stood back and on a floating piece of shattered bone and fired arrows that bypassed the chaotic battles to execute the alien officers attempting to rally their broken troops. General Seraphina utilized her segmented whip sword to slice through the organic defenses of the fortress itself.
General Goliath coated his gauntlets in thick earth Qi and punched the void to send localized shockwaves that turned approaching enemies into dust. General Zane rode the outer edges of the army and tossed his chakrams to clear away the creatures attempting to flank the Black Turtle. General Tarkus and Sixth General Rai fought side by side as the sound vibrations from Tarkus destabilized the creatures so Rai could pierce their hearts with his lightning spear.
Zhan Tian led the charge continuously forward with his glaive resting in his hands. He swung the heavy blade and released a crescent of silver Qi that parted the void and shattered a large section of the fortress wall open. The Worldkeeper fought with a calm and terrifying grace that inspired his generals to push even harder into enemy territory.
When their lord was in front of them, they would never back down and only follow his back. It has been like this for as long as they could remember and that back never fell. It seemed like that back could stand and hold up the entire cosmos if needed and just seeing that view inspired every single soldier to fight at a much higher level, as if they were possessed by demons.
Li Yu stood near the rear of the command group and watched the grand spectacle of war unfold before his eyes. He analyzed the intricate flow of Qi within the four formations and marveled at the seamless coordination required to maintain such towering avatars. The elite soldiers were not just blindly feeding energy into a construct. They were constantly adjusting their output and moving to different locations to match the shifting tides of the battle while covering for any comrades who grew fatigued. They were also launching their own attacks from the construct when it made sense to do so, picking off the smaller groups that were near.
'Part of the power of an army lies in its unity,' Li Yu thought while observing the Azure Wyrm sweep another legion of enemies away. 'Individual strength is vital but a unified force of thousands can reshape a battlefield in ways a single cultivator cannot easily replicate without expending a vast amount of their effort.'
The fighting of the army gave him inspiration and wisdom to lead his own Eternal Koi. โGrandpa fights at the very front and leads his people forward. That is what I wanted to be as well but that is only possible when having great leaders that are doing the rest. He wouldnโt be able to freely charge ahead if he had to worry about everyone else. He trusts his generals, commanders and every single level down to the soldiers to do what they need to do and stay alive.โ
Li Yu did not just stand by as a passive observer of course. He saw the oceans of cultivation energy spilling from the Hollow Husk creatures still alive or dying and he utilized his unique advantages to reap the rewards of the slaughter. Everyone one of these vile creatures would become a stepping stone on his path towards the Dao. He kept his ethereal Koi martial spirit safely hidden within his inner sanctuary as before but he projected its immense suction force outward into the void even more strongly now.
An invisible vortex formed above the battlefield almost as soon as the battle had begun and had been drinking the stray Qi drifting through the dark space. The great volume of energy generated by millions of creatures was staggering to behold and was difficult for even his incredibly robust body to handle. Li Yu felt a torrential river of power rushing into his meridians and filling his Ocean of Qi to the brim. The Koi martial spirit purified the raw power and integrated it flawlessly into his Creation Lord foundation as his body pulled a good portion of it to further strengthen itself as well. It would take him some time to truly make the power his own but the raw energy was already settling into his core and expanding his internal reserves.
He also kept a sharp eye on the battlefield for any crippled survivors floating among the debris. The Four Divine Beasts were highly destructive but the great density of the enemy swarm meant that thousands of creatures were only severely injured rather than killed outright. These creatures would normally be killed during the clean up but Li Yu had a better use for them. Li Yu projected his soul power through the void and used the invisible spiritual lines to hook the dormant suicide seals hiding within their minds.
The Fisherman Soul ripped the seals out with practiced ease and Li Yu stamped his dominant seal upon the broken minds. He opened small spatial pathways and funneled the crippled squid creatures directly into his Koi Sanctuary. He was securing thousands of new troops every few minutes as the battle raged on. His aquatic legion was growing into a formidable force of its own from just this species while he stood safely behind the independent strike force.
"The formations are holding strong and the fodder is being cleared," Elder Huo Zheng noted while watching the Vermillion Phoenix incinerate another wave of attackers. "But the true leadership of this base has not yet shown themselves. They are hiding deep within the organic fortress while their soldiers die for them or are plotting something."
"They might be waiting for our troops to tire out given their numbers." Zhan Tian said while his grip tightened on the handle of his glaive. "They think they can drown us in bodies and strike when our Qi runs low. They underestimate the endurance of my forces and the depth of our formations."
Zhan Tian raised his free hand and sent a pulse of Qi into the void to signal a shift in tactics. "Generals, push the vanguard forward and breach the main chambers. We will force the leadership to reveal themselves before they are able to escape."
The generals responded to the command with a renewed surge of lethal intent. Draken crashed into the outer walls of the fortress and began tearing the bone plating apart with his bare hands and his battleaxe. Seraphina and Zane slipped through the newly formed cracks to hunt the high value targets hiding inside with more urgency.
The Hollow Husk swarm shrieked in panic as the impenetrable Black Turtle advanced steadily to close the trap. The alien creatures were pinned against the pulsing flesh of their own headquarters and packed so tightly together that they could barely swing their weapons at this time. The grand formations began to harvest their lives with brutal efficiency and the dark void was painted with the glowing blood of the fallen.
