Chapter 2214 - 1963: We’ll Bid Double
Sassanid Fars turned his head slightly to look, and then led his generals and commanders forward on horseback. As for the cavalry they brought, the Romans had clearly done nothing shady. Since the Romans had no underhanded tricks, dispatching more troops would only make Parthia appear cowardly.
"Sassanid Fars!" A cold smile slid across Ganasis’s lips. Although he had known that this commander was that guy, seeing him in person was still quite unpleasant. Why didn’t he manage to kill this guy back then?
"Ganasis!" Sassanid Fars stared in Ganasis’s direction, his eyes slightly red. In the wars between Rome and Parthia, aside from the Roman Emperor’s personal involvement, most of the battles were fought by the Dukes of the Border Commandery. A hero to them, a foe to us, no more than that!
Compared to the harmony between the Han Army and the Romans, there’s a clear tension between Rome and Parthia upon meeting. This group of Parthians also brought no small number of Inner Qi Manifestations, and as soon as they met, there was an urge to fight.
However, after all, it was the Romans’ home ground. The Romans knew what they were doing, so although they were eager to clash with Parthia, they restrained themselves, making a gesture for Sassanid Fars to move forward.
"Hey, the demigod of the Romans seems to be missing." As Datis walked in with Fars, he observed and suddenly noticed that Ludwig hadn’t come.
Everyone present was sharp and perceptive. Moreover, both sides had been fighting for hundreds of years. Even if ordinary people couldn’t understand the words, these high-level individuals could.
At these words, the Romans all looked coldly at the Parthians. Regardless of the situation, the Han Army relied purely on strength. Whether Ludwig had been thrown into the Mediterranean or whatever, it was fundamentally because the other side was stronger.
As for you Parthians, do you have the right to say that? If it weren’t for the Han Army backing you up, with your mere ten thousand plus men, I’d beat you to a pulp.
Seeing the Romans glaring angrily, the Parthians were undaunted, all coldly staring back at the Romans. Over thirty Inner Qi Manifestations from both sides immediately exuded an atmosphere of impending battle at the camp entrance.
"Fars, are you sure you want to make a move?" Ganasis stared coldly at Sassanid Fars, without a trace of fear.
"Everyone, stand down." Sassanid Fars estimated for a moment, deciding it was best to save some face. After all, the Han Dynasty had already entered, and if they fought here now, it would disrupt the peace talks. Both sides would lose face, and more importantly, Parthia indeed needed a ceasefire for recuperation.
Upon hearing this, Ganasis sneered twice, and then strode inside, while the Parthians followed with a similar sneer.
After both Parthia and Rome entered, they found the Han Army chatting as if nothing had happened. However, upon reflection, it made sense; no matter how fiercely Rome and Parthia clashed, it was merely a trivial matter for the Han Army. Even if Rome defeated Parthia, they wouldn’t be able to attack the Han Dynasty.
Not everyone is like the madman Alexander, who launched expeditions thousands of miles away, only to lose his way and end up in India...
"Both of you, please calm down. Being able to come here demonstrates a willingness to negotiate, so there’s no need to strain the relationship so tightly," Zhuge Liang said without showing any breathlessness despite his flushed face.
Upon hearing these words, both Parthia and Rome scoffed internally. They hadn’t noticed that the Han and Northern Huns could sit peacefully together. However, considering the Han Dynasty’s deterrent power, they merely felt disgruntled internally but showed mutual acknowledgment on the surface.
The subsequent negotiations clearly reached a stalemate, but amusingly, neither side seemed overly eager to fight. The intentions of Rome were evident to the Han Dynasty; lacking sufficient strength at this moment, they could only hold a stalemate, and the drain on national resources from such a stalemate was more detrimental than simply ceasing hostilities.
Given a period to consolidate domestic strength, then sweeping Parthia in one fell swoop—such a notion seemed naïve to Zhuge Liang. While consolidating their domestic strength, Parthia would also grow stronger. How could they be sure they could easily defeat Parthia later?
Indeed, upon realizing Rome’s intentions, Zhuge Liang on one hand thought this naïve. On the other, he contemplated just how strong the Romans were. High-ranking officials in a nation might misjudge an enemy state’s strength, but after over a century of battles, the margin of error shouldn’t be too great.
Thinking from this perspective, if, in Ganasis’s assertion, once Rome frees its hands, a single effort could annihilate Parthia, then Rome’s power isn’t ordinary; their national strength is indeed formidable and terrifying.
"Marquis of Yangdu Pavilion, greetings." In the midst of the fruitless, unwilling negotiations between Parthia and Rome, some Romans shifted their attention towards the Han Army.
"Greetings, Novelli." Zhuge Liang bowed in greeting, and Novelli returned the gesture in a similarly systematic fashion.
"It’s like this. We Romans find it puzzling; the Han Dynasty has no interests in Western Asia, so why participate in such a meaningless war? This war cannot bring any benefits to your Han Dynasty." Novelli’s voice wasn’t loud, but everyone present heard it. Immediately, everyone, including the Parthians, fell silent.
Parthia had now realized a fact that the support given by the Han Dynasty to Parthia far exceeded their previous assumptions. Despite the Parthians’ belief in the Han Dynasty’s morals, the kindness from the Han was rather overwhelming—what is said about a handful of rice being an act of kindness, whereas a full granary being enmity, couldn’t be more apt.
"The tangible benefits have already been given by the Parthian Empire." Zhuge Liang responded silently to Novelli’s words.
"What kind of benefits would merit the hiring of three Military Spirit Legions, one Celestial God, and two Super Elite Legions? We Romans can offer double the price!" Novelli said straightforwardly.
Novelli’s words caused an uproar amongst the Parthians. Firstly, because Rome was willing to offer double the price to hire the Han Dynasty, and secondly, Parthia only now realized that the Han Dynasty had sent over three Military Spirit Legions. Fars Sassanian was truly dumbfounded.
"Actually, it’s not three; only one is complete." Zhuge Liang shook his head, effectively confirming that the Han Dynasty had at least three types of Military Spirit Legions. The terrifying Han Empire—they truly were the monster that stomped out the prosperous Huns.
"Complete or not, I believe the price Parthia can offer, we Romans can definitely match." Novelli smiled as he spoke, just as a hot-headed individual among the Parthian officers was about to make a move. Fortunately, Sassanid Fars was present to contain them.
"It’s not about the benefits. Just as stated earlier, no amount of benefits could ever employ three Military Spirit Legions, one Celestial God, and two Super Elite Legions." Zhuge Liang calmly regarded Novelli. Hiring, what wishful thinking! If not for the opportune coincidence, Parthia would hardly have been possible!
