Chapter 2202 - 1954: The Beginning of Vengeance

When Usnafso arrived at the Han Camp, Ganasis’s envoy had already reached the Parthian camp and met with many of Parthia’s military officers, though he had not seen Vologases V.

However, it was clear that both Parthia and the Romans were merely going through the motions. Right now, even if Parthia withdraws, the Romans will still fight; likewise, if Parthia can defeat Rome, they wouldn’t care about the Roman envoy at all.

The most awkward thing between the Han Army and Usnafso was the language barrier. Although the Han Army had a translator, the translator wouldn’t be at the camp entrance; as for the Roman translator of the Han language, it was evident he was an amateur, after all, the two sides had never really clashed before.

Fortunately, Usnafso’s translator could at least say he was an envoy, thus although surrounded by the Han Army, he escaped death. Otherwise, following the previous pace of the Han Army, he would most likely have been killed outright for spying on the camp.

"Ha, the Roman reinforcements didn’t directly aid but sent an envoy instead, I really don’t know what they’re thinking." Li Jue, upon receiving the news, said with a hint of sarcasm.

"Who knows what they’re thinking? If I were them, I’d disembark and attack directly." Fan Chou also thought the opposing side was naive and foolish.

"Traveling by sea and land is quite exhausting. Although direct attack is possible, organizing the troops while drawing Parthian attention should be the optimal choice in such circumstances." Sheni Pei muttered as he passed by, as if to himself.

Li Jue and Fan Chou felt a bit awkward upon hearing this, laughing it off, and others naturally did not pursue the matter, merely shook their heads.

Once everyone was inside the tent, Usnafso soon followed, introduced himself first, then had the translator convey his words.

"Alright, alright, Usnafso, we can understand your words. I think I’ve seen you before, by the way, has Ganasis returned?" Li Jue interrupted, annoyed as the other babbled, now able to understand him.

"Greetings to the Marquis of Chiyang from the Han Empire." Usnafso said respectfully.

In reality, Usnafso knew from this position that Li Jue was no longer in charge, but seeing a young man who appeared not even twenty, he couldn’t relax from any angle.

"Enough, enough, just say what Ganasis intends to do. Most here are marquises." Li Jue said dismissively, though pleased the other remembered his rank, but such trivialities were unimportant.

"The Duke hopes the Han Dynasty will consider, that allying with Parthia brings no benefit, instead, the Duke believes our Roman proposal west of Taysi Sealed to divide Parthia into two parts is more suitable for the Han Dynasty." Usnafso spoke very respectfully.

Sheni Pei heard and glanced at Chen Gong, then transmitted his voice to Chen Gong, "See, I knew it would be like this, in fact, if we partner with Rome now, we could easily eliminate these Parthians."

"Sheni Zhengnan, enough now, although dividing Parthia in two is indeed a suitable method, suitable or not, it’s not the time!" Chen Gong rebuked Yuan Tan, realizing Sheni Pei had become a bit too reckless since going abroad.

"Dividing Parthia in two is a good plan, but why should we implement it?" Li Jue sneered, for people like them, if occupying territory then it should be entirely theirs, otherwise, don’t occupy it at all.

"Esteemed members of the Han Empire, please consider further, there’s no dispute between Rome and the Han Empire, whereas if Parthia grows strong, it will undoubtedly counter the Han Empire." Usnafso spoke solemnly to those present, benefiting from Zhuge Liang and others using the telepathy gem.

Zhuge Liang and others silently concurred, though the Roman envoy came to ally with the Han Dynasty, favoring Roman interests over those of Parthia, yet certain truths cannot be fabricated.

"If the Han Empire withdraws now, they would gain our Roman friendship, and after we destroy Parthia, east of Media, the Han Dynasty can take freely." Usnafso threw out many promises noticing everyone was unmoved, whether they will be fulfilled or not later, he didn’t care, just saying.

"Your points are reasonable, but we cannot leave matters unfinished. Since Parthia is our ally, we must offer protection. Roman friendship is important, but our Han Empire’s commitment cannot be desecrated!" Zhuge Liang spoke with authority.

"Then our wills conflict, does the Han Army really intend to engage in a war that originally was not theirs? Fighting the Roman Empire for a place not belonging to them?" Usnafso raised his voice.

"Not for a place not belonging to us, but for the Han Dynasty’s promise. Since we vowed to protect them, we’ll not succumb to any threat." Zhuge Liang fearlessly responded to Usnafso.

"It’s truly regrettable. We could have been allies supporting each other, but now we face each other with weapons drawn," Usnafso said with a hint of regret. Whether Romans looked at Han people or Han people looked at Romans, both found each other more agreeable than they did the Parthians.

The conflict between the two sides’ wills was evident. Fortunately, Ganasis had anticipated this possibility. An empire’s persuasion by language alone meant they already intended the proposed action; without such intentions, only fists could compel them.

Thus, Ganasis had earlier advised Usnafso that if conflict arose, he should promptly submit a letter and leave, ensuring not all goodwill was obliterated. Perhaps it would leave some goodwill for future considerations.

"The Romans’ proposal is indeed quite good. Black-haired, black-eyed Romans certainly seem more agreeable; perhaps they are remnants from the Third Generation Period," Sheni Pei stated mockingly after Usnafso’s departure.

"Read through this letter. I’ll send a reply and retain the original," Zhuge Liang said, observing Ganasis’s slightly arrogant remarks on the envelope. From the Roman perspective, these were indeed sensible suggestions, but only with the Han Dynasty unified would Rome’s proposals be actionable.

"Not burning the original?" Sima Yi questioned.

"Are we afraid of it?" Zhuge Liang replied calmly. "If one is upright, no shadow can bend one’s image. Besides, I’ll admit, though we’re allies with Parthia now, conflict is inevitable if truly considered. Therefore, this course seems appropriate."

"I just wonder about the actual strength of this Roman reinforcements," Sheni Pei nodded upon hearing Zhuge Liang, changing the subject. He wasn’t someone who pursued conflict relentlessly.

Meanwhile, Parthia had already received news about the Roman envoy and was aware of the Roman envoy’s arrival on the Han Dynasty’s side.

However, unlike other Parthians curious about these events, Vologases V showed no interest, merely commanding intensified defenses against Roman reinforcements and preparing for a large-scale battle with the Romans, as war would occur on Roman soil regardless.

Yet, at dawn on the third day when Parthian scouts focused on Roman reinforcements, Parthia’s left-wing camp used for support endured a fierce attack. At that moment, Parthian dispatched scouts for alertness, both overt and covert, became ineffective.

An entire Roman Legion directly invaded Parthia’s left-wing camp, causing chaos throughout as the Roman Army appeared as if from thin air.

"Destroy Parthia’s entire left wing for me!" The Fifth Legion’s Legion Leader, Palmyro, stepped forward as if teleporting dozens of meters, instantly appearing behind Parthians’ hastily formed defense formation and casually swung his shortsword, eliminating those with their backs turned to him.

The entire Fifth Lark Legion moved like ghosts, weaving effortlessly through Parthia’s rebel army. Each swing of the shortsword took another Parthian’s life, while Parthian counterattacks caused negligible harm to the Fifth Lark Legion.

The entire legion moved ghost-like, not even needing to dodge Parthian attacks. Weapons piercing them vanished instantly, reappearing in shadows once more, moving freely with shortsword strikes piercing Parthian elites at incomprehensible angles.

"Run, they’re not human; they’re ghosts!" Cries of alarm spread within Parthia’s army, as morale waned at an incredible speed. With brilliant Roman assaults appearing intermittently, the army’s collapse began.

"Form ranks back-to-back; it’s the Roman Fifth Lark Legion, not ghosts!" Datis shouted his orders, though Roman attack strategies left him astounded. Soon he realized precisely which legion this was.

"Heh, indeed, we’re the Fifth Lark!" Amidst Datis’s cries, such a voice suddenly arose beside him, causing him to reflexively sweep his spear.

But instantly, a shortsword stabbed down from Datis’s back, and he turned with effort to evade this strike.

"Inner Qi Manifestation as a Commander-in-chief, Parthia still employs such outdated methods." Palmyro sneered, appearing before Datis, glancing at the chaotic Parthian left-wing camp. "Tell me, how long until they come to your rescue?"

Datis, observing the chaotic and uncontrollable Parthian soldiers and Roman elites appearing intermittently amidst flames and darkness, easily slayed Parthian elites.

The Fifth Lark Legion’s killing efficiency far exceeded Parthian Army’s tolerance levels. In less than half of an hour, Parthia’s left-wing would face utter collapse from this attack style.
