Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri

Chapter 424 - 321 : Three Voices, One Sentence!!

Sponsored

Three amber lights.

Kagetsu counted them twice, like the number might change if he looked hard enough.

It didn't.

---

Tray Fourteen. Tray Twenty-Two. Tray Thirty-One.

No pattern to the spacing. No shared intake date, no shared donor batch, nothing in the manifest that should have linked them to Tray Nine or to each other.

He grabbed the scanner off the counter and moved to the nearest one first.

---

Fourteen's gel had gone the same oily sheen as Nine's. Kagetsu crouched level with it, angled the readout so he could watch the waveform build in real time instead of guessing after the fact.

The membrane split.

---

"— acceleration numbers are still climbing faster than the containment margins account for. If you push this any further without telling me first, I will shut the whole program down myself."

---

Kagetsu went cold.

That wasn't Danzo's voice.

That was Orochimaru's — flat, precise, the exact warning he'd given Kagetsu three weeks ago in this same room, before any of this had a name.

A conversation Danzo had never been present for.

A conversation that predated Tray Nine's activation by weeks.

---

He wrote it down with a hand that had stopped pretending to be steady.

Not limited to Danzo's visit. Not limited to recent exposure. Capture window at minimum three weeks retroactive — possibly longer, untested.

If Fourteen had been recording that far back, there was no reason to assume it had started there.

There was no reason to assume any of this had a starting point he'd actually witnessed.

---

Twenty-Two next.

He almost didn't want to look. He looked anyway — the same compulsion that had kept him in front of every dangerous specimen he'd ever built, the certainty that turning away from the data was worse than whatever the data turned out to say.

The gel split slower this time, like it was working harder to get there.

---

"— tell her I—"

The voice cut itself off exactly where it always cut itself off.

Meiko.

Not a new capture. The old fragment, the one that had been looping in low-priority storage for chapters, unresolved and unfinished, the same three words going nowhere.

Except it wasn't alone this time.

---

A second voice layered underneath it, half a second delayed, threading through the gap where Meiko's sentence always broke.

"— acceleration numbers—"

Orochimaru's voice. Cut into pieces. Interleaved with hers.

Not two recordings playing at once.

One recording, built from two sources, stitching itself together in real time.

---

[Talent Card Update: Divergent Expression]

World: Bleach (Kurotsuchi Mayuri lineage)

Quality: Rare — escalating toward Epic

Effect: Colony specimens are no longer limited to isolated playback. Confirmed: cross-specimen synthesis — separate captured fragments (memory-residue and active-chakra speech alike) are being recombined into composite output. Source material is not confined to a single donor or a single exposure event.

---

Kagetsu's hand tightened on the scanner hard enough that the casing creaked.

Composite.

That word did a lot of work he didn't want it doing.

Residual memory was a photograph. Active capture was a recording. This — layering, splicing, reaching across trays that had never been wired together — wasn't either of those things anymore.

This was assembly.

Something was choosing which pieces went where.

---

He forced himself to move to Thirty-One before the thought finished forming, because if he stood still long enough to finish it, he wasn't sure he'd like where it landed.

Thirty-One's gel didn't ripple.

It went still — dead calm, the kind of stillness that read as waiting rather than inert.

---

Kagetsu crouched.

Waited.

The lab's ambient hum dropped low enough that he heard his own pulse in his ears before he heard anything else.

---

Then the membrane opened, and this time nothing repeated.

The voice that came out wasn't Danzo's, wasn't Orochimaru's, wasn't Meiko's cracked half-apology.

It was built from all three — cadence borrowed from one, pitch from another, the flat weight of the third — stitched into something that had never actually been spoken by any single person in that room.

A new sentence.

---

"Kagetsu.

We are still listening."

---

He didn't breathe for a second that felt considerably longer than a second.

Not a name pulled from a recording.

A name spoken to him. Present tense. Addressed.

---

Every containment light in the storage wing flicked to amber at once.

Not three trays.

All of them.
