Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri

Chapter 437 - 333 : A Second Opinion!!

The comm line connected on the second ring.

"This had better be an emergency," Kushina said, before Orochimaru had said a word, "because it’s the middle of the night and Minato just got Naruto back to sleep after an hour of—"

"It’s an emergency."

Something in his voice must have carried, because the rest of her sentence just stopped.

"...I’m listening."

He didn’t dress it up. Kagetsu, listening from the workbench with his sleeve still rolled to the shoulder, found himself grateful for that — no soft opening, no attempt to manage how bad it sounded before saying it.

The mark. The vision. The blackout. The kunai that hit something and left a matching wound six feet away. The seal that held for eleven seconds and then didn’t. The half-second where Orochimaru’s own hand had carried someone else’s pulse.

Kushina didn’t interrupt once.

When he finished, there was a long, weighted silence on the other end of the line.

"I’m bringing my kit," she said. "Minato’s coming too. Don’t touch it again before we get there. Either of you."

[TALENT CARD ALERT — Divergent Expression]

World: Kurotsuchi Mayuri (Bleach)

Quality: Epic

Trigger: Mark growth rate, past twenty minutes

Status: Spread has slowed to approximately one-third of its prior pace since the seal attempt. Cause unconfirmed — possible residual effect of the suppression technique, possible unrelated behavior change.

"That’s either good news or it’s waiting for something," Orochimaru said, reading the notification over Kagetsu’s shoulder.

"Which do you think it is."

"I think I’ve stopped assuming anything about this thing is good news by default."

Kushina arrived twenty minutes later in the kind of quiet, focused hurry that didn’t look like hurry unless you already knew her — no wasted motion, sealing kit slung over one shoulder, Minato half a step behind her with the particular stillness he wore when he’d already decided panicking wouldn’t help and was holding to that decision by force of will.

She didn’t ask how Kagetsu was feeling.

She took his arm, turned it into the light, and looked.

For a long time.

"Kushina."

"Give me a second." Her voice had gone flat and professional, the tone Kagetsu recognized from every serious fuinjutsu conversation he’d overheard secondhand — the tone of someone doing math in her head that she didn’t like the answer to. "Orochimaru, walk me through the seal you used. Exactly. Every line, in order."

He did.

She nodded along, once, twice — and then stopped nodding entirely at the description of the inner offset ring.

"You used my structure."

"The unclassified part."

"I know which part." She wasn’t looking at him anymore. She was looking at the mark, tracing its edge with her eyes rather than her hand, visibly resisting the urge to touch it after Orochimaru’s warning. "Kagetsu. Has anyone in your family ever had red hair."

The question landed strangely enough that it took him a second to process it as a real question and not a non sequitur.

"...No. Why."

"Because that structure isn’t generic containment craft," Kushina said. "It’s Uzumaki. Old Uzumaki, the kind that isn’t taught outside the clan, the kind Orochimaru shouldn’t have had access to at all." She glanced at him. "Where did you actually learn it."

"I reverse-engineered it," Orochimaru said, without a trace of shame, "from watching you use it on a training dummy four months ago. I didn’t realize it was restricted. I apologize for that, and I’ll apologize properly later. Right now I’d like you to finish the thought you were having, because I don’t think it was about intellectual property."

Kushina exhaled through her nose, filed the irritation away for a more convenient time, and crouched to look at the mark from a lower angle.

"The reason it cracked in eleven seconds," she said slowly, "isn’t that it’s stronger than the seal. It’s that Uzumaki containment structures respond to intent, not just form. You drew the shape right. You didn’t draw it with an Uzumaki behind it. It read the gap and used it."

"So it needs someone with the bloodline," Kagetsu said. "To hold."

"It needs someone with the bloodline to have a chance," Kushina corrected. "I’m not promising it holds even then. I’ve never sealed anything that transferred a stranger’s pulse into a second person’s hand just from a fingertip. That’s not in any scroll I’ve ever read, restricted or otherwise."

She reached toward the mark.

Not touching it. Close. Close enough that Kagetsu felt something in his arm respond before her hand had actually made contact — a faint pull, subtle, like the mark leaning toward her the way a plant leans toward a window.

"Kushina, don’t—"

"I’m not going to touch it yet," she said, low, eyes narrowed in concentration. "I want to see if it reacts to proximity the same way it reacted to Orochimaru’s contact."

It did.

A thin thread of ash-red lifted off the surface of Kagetsu’s forearm — visibly, physically, a hair-width filament rising through the air toward her outstretched fingers, the first time any of them had seen it move independent of skin at all.

Minato moved before anyone said a word, one hand closing around Kushina’s wrist and pulling it back, fast and certain, the reflexes of a man who had spent years being faster than everyone else in a room and had just used every bit of it on his wife instead of an enemy.

The thread snapped taut, then broke, and dissolved into nothing a foot short of her hand.

Silence.

"...Kushina."

"I’m fine." Her voice wasn’t as steady as the words. "I’m fine, Minato, it didn’t reach me."

"It moved toward you." Orochimaru’s voice was very careful now, very controlled, the way it got right before he said something no one wanted to hear. "It’s never done that. Not toward me. Not toward the colony. It has only ever moved toward Kagetsu, or reacted to things done to Kagetsu."

"Until now," Kagetsu said.

The mark on his arm pulsed once, warm, almost — he searched for the word and hated the one that came — almost pleased, and from somewhere in the storage wing behind them, low and even and unmistakably not the colony’s borrowed cadence, a voice that had spoken exactly one word two Chapters ago said a second one.

"Uzumaki."
