Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri

Chapter 435 - 331 : The Weight of a Hand!!

Sponsored

Darkness in a sealed corridor isn’t like darkness anywhere else.

There’s no moon to adjust to. No gap under a door. Just black, total and immediate, and the small, stupid part of Kagetsu’s brain that still ran on instinct screamed that his eyes had simply stopped working.

"Don’t move," Orochimaru said, somewhere to his left. Close. Closer than he’d been a second ago.

"I wasn’t planning to."

"Your hand was."

Right.

Kagetsu closed his fingers into a loose fist by feel alone, and immediately regretted it, because closing a fist was the one thing they’d spent the last two Chapters trying not to do.

Nothing happened.

That was almost worse.

[TALENT CARD ALERT — Divergent Expression]

World: Kurotsuchi Mayuri (Bleach)

Quality: Epic

Trigger: Total sensor blackout across containment field, Corridor Seven and adjacent trays

Status: No visual data. No chakra data. Every specimen within thirty feet has gone completely silent.

"That’s not the lights going out," Kagetsu said. "That’s every tray in range losing its own senses too."

"You’re saying it’s not darkness. It’s absence."

"I’m saying I don’t know the difference right now and I don’t like that I don’t know."

Orochimaru’s hand found his shoulder in the black, gripped hard enough to hurt, which he understood immediately as the plan: pain is a fixed point, and fixed points are the only thing that matters when nothing else can be trusted.

"Then we go by touch," Orochimaru said. "And the second I tell you to move, you move."

"Copy."

Somewhere ahead, closer than the corridor’s dimensions should have allowed, something exhaled.

It wasn’t breath, not exactly. Too even, too long, with none of the small human catches that real breathing has. But it was directional. It came from a specific point in the dark and moved, and both of them turned toward it the way anyone turns toward a sound that shouldn’t be there.

"Finally," it had said, last Chapter.

It didn’t say anything now.

It reached.

Orochimaru moved first — Kagetsu felt him shift, felt the displaced air of a kunai drawn and thrown in one motion toward the exact point the exhale had come from, no hesitation, no warning shot, the reaction of a man who had decided pain was a fixed point and unknowns were not worth the luxury of caution.

The kunai should have hit something or hit nothing.

It did both.

Kagetsu heard the blade connect — a wet, resistant sound, meat and not-meat at once — and in the same half-second felt a line of cold open across the back of his own hand, sharp and clean, exactly where a kunai would land if it had struck him instead of empty air six feet away.

He didn’t cry out. He didn’t have time to.

The dark simply ended.

The corridor lights came back on all at once, too bright after nothing, and Kagetsu’s first coherent thought was that the figure was gone.

His second thought was the pain.

A thin red line had opened across the back of his marked hand — the eye’s hand — bleeding freely, in the exact shape and depth of a kunai’s edge.

Orochimaru’s kunai, six feet away, buried in the drywall at the end of the corridor, was clean. No blood. No resistance marks. As if it had struck nothing at all.

"That’s not possible," Orochimaru said, already moving to grab Kagetsu’s wrist, already assessing the cut with the flat clinical focus of a man who had field-treated worse and refused to let his hands shake while doing it. "I hit it. I felt it hit. There was nothing there for the blade to hit but I felt it hit."

"You hit it," Kagetsu said, watching blood well along the eye’s iris-line, "and I bled."

[TALENT CARD ALERT — Divergent Expression]

Trigger: Direct injury correlated with remote strike; unclassified signature, last location

Status: Signature no longer detected within containment field. Colony consensus (unanimous, second time on record): the wound and the strike were the same event, occurring in two places at once.

"That’s not a wound from contact," the colony said, voice tight in a way Kagetsu had never heard from it before — not cautious, not calculating, something closer to what he’d have called afraid, if he’d been willing to use that word about forty-three fused organisms in dishes. "Orochimaru struck the figure. You carried the injury. There was no gap in that transfer. No delay. Whatever the mark is now, it isn’t just a channel between you and it."

"Say the rest of it," Orochimaru said.

"It means the mark has made your body and its body partially the same body," the colony said. "For at least one strike, in at least one place, damage didn’t have to choose which of you to happen to."

Kagetsu looked at the cut.

It was already closing — not fast, not supernaturally, just an ordinary shallow wound doing what ordinary shallow wounds do, which was somehow the most unsettling part of all of it. If it had glowed, or knit itself shut in a heartbeat, or done anything dramatic, he could have filed it under "clearly not human" and moved on.

Instead it just hurt, normally, the way a cut is supposed to hurt, and that made the idea that Orochimaru’s blade had also opened it feel less like a horror story and more like an engineering problem with a horror story’s consequences.

"If you’d hit it somewhere that mattered," Kagetsu said slowly, "if that kunai had gone through what should’ve been its throat instead of a shoulder—"

"I know where I aimed," Orochimaru said. "I know what I would have done to it if that connection runs both ways."

Neither of them finished the thought out loud.

They didn’t have to.

The colony broke the silence first.

"There’s something else."

"Say it."

"The mark didn’t stop where it was, this time," the colony said. "While the corridor was dark — while you were bleeding — it moved. We couldn’t see it happen. We can see where it stopped."

Kagetsu looked down at his arm on reflex, expecting the closed-eye pattern he already knew, the one that ran from wrist to elbow, the one Orochimaru had spent an entire Chapter holding open by force.

It wasn’t at the elbow anymore.

Fine ash-red lines, the same grained, layered texture as the eye itself, had climbed past the joint and were still — slowly, almost lazily, like something that had all the time in the world and knew it — spreading up the outside of his forearm.

Toward the shoulder.

Toward, if it kept its current pace, somewhere a lot closer to his chest than either of them was prepared to discuss.

"Orochimaru."

"I see it."

"It wasn’t doing this an hour ago."

"I know." Orochimaru’s grip on his arm tightened, and for the first time all night, his voice didn’t sound composed at all. "Kagetsu. We are done treating this as something we can watch and wait on."

Down the corridor, from the drywall where it still sat buried and clean, Orochimaru’s kunai fell out of the wall on its own and hit the floor with a small, ordinary clatter — as if whatever had been holding it in place had simply, finally, let go.
