Chapter 311: Mundane reality

Making her way up the winding stone path toward the residential quad, she watched the noise of the bustling grounds fade slightly as she entered the inner gardens.

"You’re alive."

Samantha stopped. Xander Gray stood near a tall glass kiosk.

He leaned against the polished metallic frame, hands in his pockets, his dark hair slightly ruffled, his dark uniform immaculate as always.

He had a light smirk on his face, but his eyes were sharp, quietly scanning her from head to toe.

"Last time I checked," Samantha said, her voice quiet.

"Good," Xander said, stepping away from the kiosk and walking toward her.

"Because apparently you brought half of Tenebris home with you. The perimeter scanners nearly blew a fuse when you stepped onto the plaza."

He grinned good-naturedly.

"Remarkably, the security team hasn’t initiated a lockdown."

Samantha gave a faint, rare smile, though her posture remained guarded.

"It was just a minor issue."

"Right," Xander chuckled, stopping a few feet away.

His eyes drifted to the leather-wrapped shape slung over her back, lingering on the subtle way the surrounding umbralis seemed to warp slightly near its edges.

The humor in his posture softened into something more genuine.

"It’s good to see you, Sammie. We were starting to write eulogies, you know...thought maybe..." he murmured.

"I’m hard to kill," she said.

"Clearly," another voice said from behind Xander.

Lucian stepped out from the shadow of the nearby archway.

He wore his standard training darks with his sleeves rolled up to his elbows.

His exposed arms looked leaner and more heavily toned than Samantha remembered.

His posture was rigid, his expression as quiet and unreadable as ever.

He slowly approached, stopping beside Xander, his dark eyes fixed entirely on Samantha’s face.

"You sure took your time," Lucian said.

"I had somewhere to be," Samantha replied, her tone matching his.

Lucian’s gaze drifted slowly to the weapon on her back, then returned to her eyes, his lips curling ever so slightly into the ghost of a smirk.

He could perceive the dense presence of Umbralis that subtly trailed her every move.

"You’re different," Lucian noted quietly.

Samantha looked at him, noting the quiet intensity in his eyes.

"So are you," she said.

"Probably," Lucian replied, giving her a brief nod.

"Can we move this sentimental reunion somewhere that doesn’t smell like drone exhaust?" a third voice called out.

Edmund Brewer and Warren walked over from the direction of the student center.

Edmund looked polished, his formal coat buttoned neatly, though the faint dark circles under his eyes betrayed a lack of rest.

Behind him, Warren walked at a relaxed pace, his hands tucked deep into his trousers, his broad shoulders squared.

"Samantha," Edmund said, his relief obvious as he reached the group.

"It’s really you."

He paused, taking in the wrapped weapon, before shaking his head slightly.

"I’m glad you made it back."

"Thanks, Edmund," Samantha said. She looked at him closely.

"You look tired. Everything alright?"

Edmund gave a wry, brief smile, adjusting his collar.

"Family business. The Brewer estate has been... complicated. Political inquiries, family challenges, the usual headaches."

"He’s been living on caffeine and legal briefs for two weeks," Xander volunteered cheerfully.

"It’s terrible for his combat reflexes. I owned him three times in morning sparring yesterday. Not that it’d have made much of a difference anyway if he wasn’t distracted. "

Warren stepped up, giving Samantha a firm, steady nod.

"Good to have you back, Sam. The squad was short on sensible people."

Samantha nearly did a double take, staring at him.

"Well, something has certainly changed..." she thought.

"It really was," she actually agreed, albeit half-heartedly, glancing around the group.

"So who were you with?" Xander asked, his eyes shining with curious light.

"Maestro Nadia Varas and Maestro Darklight. "

It was Xander’s turn to double take.

"Darklight? As in the Conrad Darklight?"

Samantha slowly nodded.

"Yeah. "

"Good to know you survived. That monster’s reputation precedes him."

Edmund and Warren stared at him with curiosity while Lucian simply shook his head.

The familiar banter and the sweet scent of fresh air felt grounding, a sharp contrast to the silent, suffocating depths of the Tenebris.

But as her eyes scanned the plaza once more, taking in the influx of students and staff, she felt the obvious absence in their circle.

"Where’s Emily?" Samantha asked.

The light mood among the group shifted slightly, settling into a quieter, more subdued tone.

"With Lord Halecrest," Edmund answered, his voice dropping slightly.

"After you left...Merlin Halecrest took her on as an apprentice. A lot has happened since then."

"Merlin Halecrest, who is that?"

Xander raised an eyebrow at that, while Edmund shook his head.

"It’s a long story. But all you have to know is as far as big deals go, he’s as big of a deal as they get..."

"How long is he keeping her?" Samantha asked, her brow furrowing slightly.

"Apparently as long as he thinks necessary," Xander said, crossing his arms.

"Lord Halecrest doesn’t operate on the academy’s academic calendar. Word is, he’s undertaking her tutelage himself. Helping her nurture and develop her Talents personally."

"She’ll probably walk back through those gates looking like a completely different person," Edmund added, looking toward the distant mountain peaks beyond the academy’s giant perimeter walls.

"Which seems to be a trend for our group lately."

Samantha remained quiet, her fingers brushing against the strap of her bag.

She could feel the Umbralis flowing through the ancient stone pathways beneath their feet—a massive, subterranean grid that powered the academy’s barrier systems and training facilities.

Before Tenebris, it had been an abstract concept taught in lecture halls to the young scions of the Great Houses.

Now, it felt almost tactile, like a deep, heavy pulse beating right beneath her soles.

"Anyway," Xander said, breaking the brief silence with a clap of his hands, "since you aren’t dead, you’re just in time for the madness."

"The Festival of Shadows officially opens in three days."

"I saw the banners," Samantha said as the group began walking together down the central avenue toward the residential blocks. "Why are the Talented families being hosted at a Brotherhood festival?"

"Politics," Edmund said, stepping around an automated cleaning drone that was polishing the stone tiles.

"The Council of Assassins wants to demonstrate stability after the Maestro incident. Inviting the Talented families, the Great Houses—the Videntis—is a show of confidence. It tells the world that Pyreptar isn’t compromised"

"It also gives the senior instructors an excuse to show off our new tactical umbralis-fuelled arrays," Lucian muttered quietly as they walked.

"And it gives the visiting heirs an excuse to act like they own the place."

"Speaking of which," Xander said, grinning as he glanced at Samantha, "have you had food yet? Because the mess hall is currently serving delicacies to impress the visiting delegations."

"Food sounds good," Samantha admitted, feeling the exhaustion of her long journey finally settling into her muscles.

As they walked, the old gang fell into their familiar rhythm—Xander, which was new, was cracking jokes about the academy’s security upgrades, Edmund complaining, Lucian offering short, precise observations, and Warren walking silently alongside them.

Samantha walked in the center of the group, keeping the heavy Tenebris spear lowered at her back.

She listened to their voices, letting the mundane reality of academy life wash over her.

By the following morning, Pyreptar Academy had completed its transformation.

The central plazas were lined with high-tech exhibition booths, smart-glass displays, and temporary arenas enclosed by kinetic dampening barriers.

Students moved through the avenues in polished uniforms, mixed with visiting representatives from the Talented and Great Houses, external mercenary groups, and independent syndicates.

In one of the upper courtyards, a group of Novices was performing a live demonstration of Umbralis techniques.

A dense, ink-like shadow surged around the lead demonstrator’s blades, cleanly severing reinforced target pillars without making a sound.

A few dozen yards away, a delegation from the Videntis watched with polite, guarded interest.

Their lead representative—a tall young man wearing the silver-trimmed coat, a signature of stature as one of the upper echelon of the Talented —occasionally whispered to his aides, his expression distant and unimpressed.

Samantha stood near the edge of the terrace, holding a warm cup of black coffee she had bought from a modern food stall near the library. Her wrapped spear rested against the stone wall beside her.

"They don’t like each other," a voice said.

Lucian walked up the steps, holding a pair of weighted training daggers in his left hand.

He stopped beside her, looking down at the crowd below.

"The Talented think Umbralis is just a specialized, crude form of physical enhancement," Lucian said quietly.

"And the Brotherhood thinks the Talented rely too much on inherited lineage abilities instead of discipline."

"They’re both wrong," Samantha said, taking a sip from her cup.

"It’s just different sides of the same coin."

Lucian glanced at her.

"Wise words...and from one so young..."

Xander stared at him in shock.

"Did you...did you just crack a joke?"
