Chapter 25: The Second Signal

Renka found the source of the second flare an hour after dawn, and she didn’t like what she found enough to wait for a formal report to explain it.

She came through the kitchen door at a dead run, breathless, amber eyes wide.

"You need to see this," she said. "Now."

They followed her past the outer wall, past the tree line where she’d once watched the estate for three unnoticed days, to a small clearing half a mile out that Ryuji had never had reason to visit before.

The grass there had burned in a perfect circle, blackened and curled inward, though nothing around the circle’s edge showed any sign of fire spreading outward.

At its center, driven upright into the scorched earth, stood a single black feather, larger than either of the two they’d already received, its gold edge glowing faint even in daylight.

Selene approached it carefully, the same wary respect she’d shown the door.

"This is not the same signature as the one beneath our house," she said. "Close. Related. But different, the way a sibling’s voice differs from your own."

"You’re saying there’s another one," Ryuji said.

"I am saying the Sanctum was right. Three Wardens. And this feather belongs to a second."

Seris crouched near the burn line, studying the pattern with the particular focus of someone who’d spent a career reading scenes for information others missed.

"This wasn’t a fight," she said. "No struggle marks. No blood, no drag lines. Whatever did this simply arrived, made its point, and left."

"Same as the first feather," Ryuji said. "A message."

"A message aimed where, though." Seris straightened, gray eyes narrowing toward the estate visible through the trees. "This is close enough to see your walls. Whoever left it wanted you to find it fast."

Marro had insisted on coming despite his age, lantern unnecessary in the daylight but carried anyway out of habit, and he studied the feather with the same drained pallor he’d worn every time the Warden made itself known.

"Sir," he said quietly, "I believe this second one is not simply observing. I believe it is announcing itself."

"To what end."

"I do not know. But announcements are rarely made by things that intend to remain patient much longer."

[System Log: Day 35]

[A SECOND WARDEN-ALIGNED SIGNAL HAS BEEN LOCATED, DISTINCT FROM BUT RELATED TO THE FIRST]

[THE SIGNATURE DIFFERENCE SUGGESTS SEPARATE INDIVIDUALS SHARING A COMMON TITLE, CONSISTENT WITH THE VOID SANCTUM’S REPORT]

[LOCATION: HALF A MILE FROM THE ESTATE, WITHIN CLEAR VISUAL RANGE OF THE OUTER WALL]

[THIS IS SIGNIFICANTLY CLOSER THAN EITHER PREVIOUS CONTACT]

[...]

[I HAVE BEGUN TRACKING PROXIMITY AS A SEPARATE VARIABLE FROM ACTIVITY]

[BOTH ARE INCREASING]

[I DO NOT LIKE EITHER TREND]

They brought the feather back to the estate, though nobody suggested storing it with the first two, and instead left it on the kitchen table apart from the others, three black feathers now arranged in a row that felt less like a collection and more like a countdown nobody had agreed to start.

Alexei studied them together, crimson eyes narrowed.

"Three feathers," he said. "Three Wardens, if the Sanctum’s letter holds true. Does this mean all three are now aware of the estate?"

"I don’t know," Ryuji said. "But I’d rather plan for yes than be wrong about no."

Selene sat at the table, exhaustion visible now beneath the composure she usually wore, the accumulated weight of weeks without a single easy night finally starting to show through.

"We cannot fight three ancient beings capable of erasing people from history," she said. "Not with blades. Not with void energy. Not with anything we currently possess."

"No," Ryuji agreed.

"Then what do we do."

He looked at the three feathers, black and gold, arranged like a warning nobody had finished reading yet, and thought about every negotiation he’d ever survived in his old life, every deal made with people who could have crushed him without effort if they’d simply decided he wasn’t worth the trouble of a conversation first.

"We give them a reason to keep talking instead of deciding," he said.

"Talking to what," Selene said. "It doesn’t use words. It uses impressions. How do you negotiate with something that speaks in feelings instead of language?"

"The same way I negotiated with men who didn’t speak my language back home. You don’t need shared words. You need shared stakes. Something it wants that it can’t get by simply erasing me."

Seris, still seated by the fire though fully healed now, tilted her head with genuine interest. "What could an ancient guardian being possibly want from a classless summon and his household of misfits."

"I don’t know yet," Ryuji admitted. "But it hasn’t decided to act. That means something’s still open. Curiosity, maybe. Or doubt. Either one is a door I can work with."

Selene reached across the table, her hand settling over his the way it did now without hesitation, an anchor point neither of them questioned anymore.

"You sound certain," she said.

"I’m not certain. I’m just used to not having the luxury of giving up before I’ve actually tried."

Something in her expression softened at that, warm and worried at once, and she leaned closer, close enough that he caught the scent of cold iron and something floral clinging faintly to her hair despite the fear still tightening her jaw.

"Selene."

"What."

"I’m not planning on losing you either. Same rule applies both directions."

Her breath caught, and for a moment neither of them said anything else, the weight of the three feathers on the table between them somehow smaller with her hand still warm against his.

Alexei cleared his throat loudly, breaking the moment with the particular discomfort of a man who had walked into a conversation he wasn’t sure he was supposed to witness.

"If we are finished with sentiment," he said, eye twitching once, "I would suggest doubling patrols around the clearing where this feather was found. If a second Warden is close enough to leave a message half a mile from our wall, it is close enough to do considerably more."

"Agreed," Ryuji said, releasing Selene’s hand reluctantly to stand. "Renka, can your network keep eyes on that clearing without drawing attention?"

"I’ll manage it," she said. "Though I’d feel better if I understood what I was actually watching for."

"So would I," Ryuji admitted. "That’s the problem."

The household spent the rest of the day preparing in the only ways available to them, reinforcing wards that barely functioned, doubling watches that couldn’t stop what they were watching for, gathering information about a threat none of them fully understood.

By evening, exhausted in the particular way that came from fighting an enemy you couldn’t see clearly enough to properly fear, Ryuji found Selene standing alone at the kitchen window, staring out toward the tree line where the second feather had been found.

"You should rest," he said.

"I cannot."

"You’ve been awake for two days straight."

"So have you." She turned to look at him, violet eyes tired but steady. "I do not know how to rest when something might be deciding whether you continue to exist."

He crossed the kitchen and stood beside her, close enough that their shoulders touched, and for a moment neither of them said anything at all, just existed together in the quiet weight of everything neither of them could control.

"Selene."

"What."

"Come sit with me. We’ll rest together. Watch together. Same as everything else."

She didn’t argue. She let him lead her to the chair by the fire, and sat close beside him, her head eventually finding his shoulder as exhaustion finally overcame fear, her breathing slowing into something almost peaceful for the first time in days.

He stayed awake, watching the fire, watching the door, watching everything he could actually watch while the things he couldn’t watch continued deciding his fate somewhere beyond his reach.

Outside, past the wall, past the tree line, the scorched clearing sat quiet under the rising moon.

But in the fog beyond it, where Renka’s newly assigned watchers hadn’t yet reached, a third shape moved through the mist, slower than the others, older, carrying something the first two Wardens had not yet dared to bring this close to the estate.

A decision.
