Chapter 28: What the King Knows

Voldranis did not speak again for a long moment, and the silence in the Obsidian Court stretched thin enough that Ryuji could hear the faint hiss of void-crystal pulsing in the walls around them.

"Sit," the king said finally, gesturing to a low stone bench near the throne’s base. "This is not a story told standing."

Selene sat first, spine straight despite the tremor Ryuji could feel through her hand. He sat beside her, close enough that their shoulders touched, and Alexei took a position near the door, arms crossed, crimson eyes sharp with the particular alertness of a soldier who suspected the conversation might turn dangerous before it turned informative.

"Four hundred years ago," Voldranis began, "your mother discovered something she should not have discovered. She never told me the full shape of it. Only that it concerned the Accord itself, and that it frightened her more than anything in four centuries of marriage ever had."

"You knew," Selene said. Her voice carried something raw underneath the control. "You knew she was afraid, and you let the court call her death a fever."

"I believed the fever, Selene. For decades, I believed it." Voldranis’s ember eyes dimmed, old grief surfacing through the weight of centuries. "It was only recently that evidence surfaced suggesting otherwise. A courier’s ledger, hidden in archives even I did not know existed. Payments made to healers who attended her in her final days. Payments that did not originate from this palace."

"From where, then," Ryuji asked.

Voldranis’s gaze shifted to him, weighing, and for a moment Ryuji thought the king might refuse to answer a classless human directly at all.

"From an agent operating under no kingdom’s banner," Voldranis said instead. "Someone who moves through both Theron and the Dominion without allegiance to either. Someone who has been quietly steering conflict between our peoples for longer than either kingdom has records to prove."

Selene’s breath caught, sharp. "You are describing something beyond politics."

"I am describing something I do not fully understand myself," Voldranis admitted, and the admission cost him visibly, a king unused to confessing ignorance in his own court. "Only that this agent believed your mother a threat worth silencing, and that the ledger suggests she was not the only such payment made over the centuries."

The Obsidian Court felt colder suddenly, the violet crystal light along the walls dimming in sympathy with whatever weight had settled over the conversation.

"Others," Alexei said from the doorway, voice tight. "How many others."

"I do not know. The ledger was incomplete. Deliberately, I suspect." Voldranis’s massive hands curled into fists against the arms of his throne. "But I know this. Whoever ordered your mother’s death has continued operating in the centuries since. And I believe, given recent reports reaching this court, that your household at the border has drawn their attention again."

Ryuji went very still.

"You know about the assassins," he said.

"I know a great deal more than you might expect, classless one. Kings do not survive as long as I have by remaining ignorant of what happens at their borders." Voldranis studied him with new intensity. "The maker’s mark your wolf-kin scout traced to a human noble house. The unmarked riders. The feathers." A pause. "The Wardens."

Selene’s fingers tightened around Ryuji’s. "You know about the Wardens too."

"I know they exist. I know almost nothing else. They predate this kingdom’s founding by an age none of our scholars can properly measure." Voldranis’s ember eyes flickered toward Ryuji again, something almost like reluctant respect threading through the suspicion. "That they have taken interest in your husband specifically is either the worst possible development for this household, or the beginning of something none of us have the vocabulary to name yet."

[System Log: Day 39]

[KING VOLDRANIS HAS CONFIRMED THE EXISTENCE OF A THIRD, UNALIGNED PARTY OPERATING ACROSS BOTH KINGDOMS FOR CENTURIES]

[THIS PARTY WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEATH OF THE PREVIOUS QUEEN AND POSSIBLY OTHERS]

[THIS PARTY IS DISTINCT FROM LORD ASHCROFT’S NETWORK]

[THIS PARTY IS DISTINCT FROM THE WARDENS]

[THE HOUSEHOLD NOW FACES THREE SEPARATE THREADS OF DANGER SIMULTANEOUSLY]

[...]

[I HAVE BEGUN TO SUSPECT THAT SOMETHING FAR OLDER THAN EITHER KINGDOM IS QUIETLY SHAPING EVENTS FROM BEHIND ALL OF THEM]

[I DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH DATA TO NAME IT]

[THAT ABSENCE UNSETTLES ME MORE THAN ANYTHING I HAVE LOGGED SO FAR]

Selene stood slowly, something fierce and controlled settling over her grief, the particular composure Ryuji had watched her build brick by brick over the last weeks reasserting itself now under pressure that would have shattered someone less trained.

"You brought me here to tell me my mother’s death was not natural," she said. "That someone unnamed and unaccountable has been operating against this kingdom for centuries. And that they may now be watching my husband."

"Yes."

"Then give me a name, Father. A location. Something I can act on, rather than a shape in the fog I cannot fight."

Voldranis’s jaw tightened, and for a moment the king looked less like a sovereign of the Void Throne and more like a father who had failed, decades ago, to protect the person he loved most.

"I do not have a name," he said. "Only patterns. Payments that trace through five kingdoms and vanish before reaching a single point of origin. Whoever this is, they have spent centuries ensuring they cannot be found."

"Then we build the case slowly," Ryuji said, and every eye in the room turned toward him. "Same as we’re already doing with Ashcroft. Patterns eventually become names, if you’re patient enough to keep tracing them."

Voldranis studied him for a long moment. "You speak like a man who has hunted people before."

"I have. Different world, similar problem. People who don’t want to be found leave fewer footprints than people who don’t know they’re being hunted at all. But nobody leaves none."

Something shifted in Voldranis’s expression, not warmth exactly, but the beginning of something less hostile than the suspicion he’d worn since Ryuji entered the court.

"You are not what the reports described," the king said.

"I’ve heard that a few times now."

"Perhaps the reports are simply wrong more often than my court cares to admit." Voldranis rose from his throne, massive and deliberate, and for a moment the whole chamber seemed to hold its breath around him. "I will share what my agents uncover as they uncover it. In return, I ask that your household share what you learn of the Wardens, and of whatever threatens your border. We face the same enemy, whether we have named them yet or not."

Selene’s eyes widened slightly, surprised by the offer, and Ryuji felt her hand relax fractionally in his.

"That is more cooperation than I expected from you," she said.

"I lost your mother to silence and pride," Voldranis said, voice rough with something he clearly rarely allowed himself to feel in front of others. "I do not intend to lose my daughter the same way."

The words landed heavy in the chamber, and Selene’s composure finally cracked, just slightly, tears gathering at the corners of her violet eyes before she blinked them back with visible effort.

"Thank you," she said quietly.

"Do not thank me yet. Thank me when your husband survives whatever the Wardens decide, and when whoever murdered your mother finally has a name attached to their crimes." Voldranis’s ember gaze settled on Ryuji one final time. "Protect my daughter, classless one. I have watched enough of my court’s reports to believe you capable of it. I have not yet decided whether I believe you deserve the chance."

They left the Obsidian Court as evening settled over Khar’noctha, violet crystal light deepening into something closer to twilight against the volcanic sky, and Selene walked in silence for a long stretch before finally speaking.

"He offered more than I expected," she said. "Cooperation. Honesty. That is not the father I grew up with."

"Grief changes people. Sometimes it takes centuries to finish the job." Ryuji glanced at her, at the exhaustion and grief and fragile new hope all tangled together in her expression. "You okay."

"No," she admitted, the same honest word she’d given him before, still unguarded now in a way that had become normal between them. "But I have a name to chase now, even if it is not the name I wanted. That is something."

"It’s something."

She stopped walking and turned to face him fully, close enough that he could see every shade of exhaustion and determination in her eyes.

"Ryuji."

"What."

"Thank you for coming with me. I do not think I could have survived hearing that alone."

He reached up, brushing a strand of silver hair back from her face, the gesture familiar now, worn smooth by weeks of small, deliberate tenderness neither of them bothered denying anymore.

"You wouldn’t have had to survive it alone," he said. "That’s not how this works anymore."

She leaned into his touch, just slightly, the fading twilight catching violet in her eyes, and for a moment the danger surrounding them both, the Wardens and Ashcroft and now this unnamed agent operating across centuries, all felt smaller than the simple fact of standing together in a foreign city that had, somehow, stopped feeling entirely foreign.

Then Alexei’s voice cut through the moment, sharp with alarm, calling from further down the obsidian street.

"Selene. Ryuji. A rider has arrived from the estate."

They turned together, and found the rider dismounting hard, breathless, Renka’s own hand-written seal pressed into the letter he carried.

"Urgent," the rider gasped. "The wolf-kin scout said it could not wait for your return."

Selene broke the seal with trembling fingers, and her face drained of color as she read.

Ashcroft’s daughter has requested formal entry to the estate. Diplomatic pretense. She arrives in three days.
