Chapter 102: The Estate Under Siege

The sky had gone the color of old bruises by the time Ryuji reached the outer wall, and the ground didn’t stop trembling once, it kept building, low and constant, like something enormous clearing its throat before speaking.

"Formation," Voss shouted, his voice cutting clean across the chaos of soldiers scrambling into position. "Dominion left flank, Theron right, hold the center for the household!"

Alexei moved through the courtyard with brisk, disciplined urgency, directing soldiers into the defensive lines Ashcroft’s scholars had mapped only days earlier, and Ryuji felt the particular cold clarity settle over him that came right before violence, the old machinery in his head cataloguing exits, threats, and the shape of a battle before it fully arrived.

Selene reached the wall beside him, void energy blazing bright enough to throw sharp shadows across the courtyard stone.

[System Log: Day 104, continued]

[THE FALSE PEACE HAS INITIATED DIRECT ASSAULT AGAINST THE ESTATE]

[THIS IS THE LARGEST, MOST DIRECT CONFRONTATION SINCE THE ORIGINAL SIEGE MONTHS AGO]

[COMBINED FORCES FROM THREE FACTIONS NOW DEFEND SIMULTANEOUSLY]

The fog rolled thick over the Grey March, and through it, shapes began to resolve, considerably more organized than the animated constructs the household had faced before, humanoid figures moving with disciplined coordination, void-dark armor catching what little light bled through the unnatural sky.

"Those aren’t constructs," Renna said, arriving at the wall breathless, pale eyes sharp with recognition. "Those are trained soldiers. It’s using actual people."

"Willing," Vashae asked, dread heavy in her voice.

"I don’t know," Renna admitted. "I never saw it commit troops this openly before. This is new, even to me."

Kaelith arrived at the wall’s edge, ancient composure fierce and focused despite the danger building beyond the fog.

"I can feel the false peace itself," she said. "Considerably closer than any previous confrontation. It intends to be present for this personally."

Ryuji felt the empathic warmth in his chest sharpen into something considerably more useful than simple recognition, spreading outward toward the approaching forces with careful, deliberate focus.

"They’re afraid," he said, surprised by the discovery. "Not confident. Afraid."

Selene glanced at him, sharp with attention. "Afraid of what."

"Failing," Ryuji said. "Same as everyone the false peace has ever used. It doesn’t inspire loyalty. It inspires fear of what happens if they don’t perform."

The realization settled cold and useful over the assembled defenders, and Ryuji felt Selene’s grip tighten around his hand, something calculating replacing the raw dread of moments before.

"Then we don’t just fight them," she said. "We give them a reason to hesitate."

The false peace’s forces broke from the treeline in disciplined waves, and the battle erupted across the estate’s reinforced walls with an intensity Ryuji hadn’t felt since the original siege months ago, Dominion soldiers meeting armored attackers with void-forged precision, Theron forces holding disciplined formation despite the unnatural terror pressing down from the churning sky above.

Ryuji fought beside Selene near the gate, the wordless coordination they’d built across months of shared danger keeping them both alive against attackers who moved with unsettling, coordinated precision, and he felt the empathic gift working even mid-combat, sensing the particular hesitation in an attacker’s strike a half second before it landed, adjusting his own movement accordingly.

"You’re finding the fear in them," Selene said, breathless between exchanges.

"Trying to," Ryuji said. "It’s slower going than fighting straight. Worth it if it keeps people alive."

Wren fought from the wall’s height, arrows finding gaps in armor with practiced precision, Ilya close behind her tending wounds where she could reach them safely, and Ryuji caught a glimpse of Talia fighting alongside Seris near the estate’s inner courtyard, the sisters moving in disciplined tandem against attackers who’d broken through the outer line.

Zarthan, having remained at the estate since Corvain’s capture, fought with devastating, controlled force near the center, his massive frame carving space through the enemy’s disciplined ranks with the particular efficiency of centuries of military experience.

The false peace itself appeared at the battle’s edge, considerably closer than any previous confrontation, robes shifting storm-gray against the churning sky.

You have built quite a defense, it said, voice carrying across the chaos without effort. Considerably more than I anticipated, even given your household’s demonstrated resourcefulness.

"Call off your soldiers," Ryuji said, breathing hard, blood tracking warm down one arm from a shallow cut. "They’re afraid of you. Not loyal. You don’t have to spend them like this."

Their fear serves my purpose adequately, the false peace said, unbothered. I have learned, across centuries, that loyalty and fear produce remarkably similar outcomes when properly directed.

Selene’s void energy flared bright and furious. "That is precisely the philosophy that cost you every agent who chose us instead."

A minority, the false peace said. I have considerably more resources remaining than the pieces you have managed to turn.

The false peace’s attention shifted, slow and deliberate, toward Kaelith standing firm at the wall’s edge.

You gave away what you were meant to guard, it said. I confess genuine curiosity what remains of you now, considerably diminished as you must be.

"Considerably freer," Kaelith corrected, violet light blazing steady despite the taunt. "I recommend you discover the difference directly, if you’re genuinely curious."

The false peace moved then, faster than Ryuji expected, closing distance toward the wall with unhurried, ancient menace, and Ryuji felt the empathic warmth in his chest surge protective and sharp, pulling him forward without conscious decision.

"Ryuji, wait," Selene called, but he was already moving, placing himself directly in the false peace’s path with the particular certainty that had carried him through every impossible confrontation since arriving in Avarthos.

You continue placing yourself between me and everything I want, the false peace said, studying him with something that might have been, in a being this ancient, genuine consideration.

"Yeah," Ryuji said. "Getting good at it too."

The false peace’s attention lingered on him, and Ryuji felt something shift in the pressure surrounding them both, considerably different than the cold calculation he’d grown accustomed to.

I have reconsidered my approach several times throughout this conflict, the false peace said. Each reconsideration has cost me considerably. I confess I am growing tired of the pattern.

"Then stop," Ryuji said. "Nobody’s making you keep doing this."

Everyone believes that about their own choices, the false peace said, something almost weary threading through its ancient voice. I have made mine considerably longer ago than you can easily imagine.

It raised one hand, and the pressure in the air sharpened, cold and absolute, and Ryuji felt the old machinery in his head recognize the shape of an attack building faster than any conversation could hope to interrupt.

Selene’s void energy surged between them, protective and fierce, meeting the false peace’s gathering power with everything she had left, and the collision shook the entire courtyard, throwing soldiers and defenders alike off balance.

"Together," she said, breathless, grip fierce around Ryuji’s hand despite the strain visible across her exhausted features.

"Always," he said, and pushed his own empathic gift outward, not toward fear this time, but toward something considerably more direct, the particular acknowledgment he’d learned mattered most across two months of watching mercy actually change outcomes.

I see you, he thought, directing it toward the ancient, weary presence pressing against them both. Whatever cost you’re carrying from choices made too long ago to undo. I see it.

The false peace’s pressure faltered, just slightly, genuine surprise breaking through centuries of calculated composure.

That is not a weapon, it said, uncertain for the first time since the confrontation began.

"Wasn’t meant to be one," Ryuji said. "Just true."

The battle around them raged on, alliance forces holding the line against the false peace’s fearful soldiers, and Ryuji felt the particular weight of a confrontation that had, for one suspended moment, shifted from violence into something considerably more uncertain.

Then the false peace’s composure hardened again, sharp and final.

Interesting, it said. Insufficient, but interesting.

It withdrew, fog swallowing its ancient form, and its soldiers, deprived of direct command, began breaking ranks in fractured, uncertain retreat.

The courtyard settled into exhausted, disbelieving quiet, and Ryuji felt Selene sag against him, adrenaline finally draining from her system.

"We held," she said, breathless.

"We held," Ryuji confirmed, though the particular weight of the false peace’s parting word, insufficient, settled cold and unresolved in his chest, the certainty that whatever came next would demand considerably more than one more successful defense.
