Chapter 182: A MEETING
Keisha’s POV
Nadia was still holding the letter when she looked up at me, clearly waiting for my answer.
She had read the final lines twice already, and the expression on her face made it obvious that she was hoping I would suddenly decide that meeting a mysterious man who knew things about my life was a terrible idea.
I couldn’t blame her. I had been thinking the same thing, but the ring sitting in my palm had changed something for me. It was my mother’s ring, something we had searched for after her death and never found. Whoever this man was, he had somehow gotten his hands on it, and he had claimed my mother knew him. I couldn’t simply throw the letter away and pretend I wasn’t curious.
"So?" Nadia finally asked. "What are you going to do?"
"I’m going to meet him."
Her mouth dropped open. "You actually decided to do it?"
"I did."
"Keisha, you cannot seriously be thinking that this is a good idea. We don’t know this man. We don’t know what he looks like, where he’s from, what he wants from you or how he knows so much about you. The fact that he has your mother’s ring doesn’t automatically make him trustworthy."
I groaned. "I know."
"Then why are you still going?"
I looked down at the letter again. "Because he knows something about my mother, Nadia. Something nobody else has been able to explain. That ring disappeared after she died. We searched everywhere for it. If this man really knew her, then I want answers."
Nadia sighed and sat back. "I’m curious too. I’m not going to lie about that. I want to know who has been sending you these letters just as much as you do, but curiosity isn’t a reason to walk into a trap."
"I won’t walk into it blindly." I wrapped my hands around my body.
"That’s exactly what you’re doing." She gasped.
I almost laughed. "You haven’t even heard the rest of the letter."
She held it up. "I have. There’s a number at the bottom. It says that if you want to meet him, you should call or text it. That’s not exactly reassuring."
I took the letter from her and looked at the number again. "I’ll message him first. I’m not going to call."
"And then what?"
I shrugged. "I’ll ask where he wants to meet."
Nadia stared at me for several seconds before shaking her head. "You are impossible."
"You’ve known that for years."
"Then at least tell Callum." She suggested.
My expression immediately changed. "No."
"Why?"
I threw my hands in the air. "Because you know exactly what he’ll say."
Nadia folded her arms. "He’ll say no."
"Exactly." I clicked my fingers.
Nadia shrugged. "And?"
"And that’s the end of the conversation."
She gave me an unimpressed look. "So you’re planning to sneak out."
"I’m planning to meet someone who may have information about my mother." I nodded.
Her voice lowered. "Without telling the man who has guards watching the entire estate because people keep trying to kill you."
For a second, I paused. "When you say it like that, it sounds worse."
Diane scoffed in my head. "Because it literally is."
"Because it is worse." Nadia confined.
Right.
I laughed despite myself, but Nadia wasn’t smiling. "Keisha, I’m serious. If Callum finds out we left without telling him, he’ll lose his mind. And honestly, I understand why. After everything that’s happened, you shouldn’t be going anywhere alone."
I smiled. "I wasn’t planning to go alone."
She paused and I looked at her while she looked back at me. "You and me?"
"Who else?" I smirked.
Nadia’s expression slowly changed from disapproval to something dangerously close to excitement. "We’re actually doing this?"
Laughter bubbled up in my throat. "We’re doing this carefully, dumbass."
She pointed at me. "I’m only agreeing because I’m coming with you. If you were planning to go alone, I would drag you back to bed myself. And we’re taking guards."
I hesitated. "Nadia."
"Don’t even start." She raised a finger.
"If there are guards following us, whoever we’re meeting might not show up." I reminded her.
Her expression didn’t falter. "Then we keep them at a distance. I’m not going anywhere without protection."
I considered it before nodding. "Fine."
"Good." We looked at each other for a moment, both knowing that neither of us had any idea what we were getting ourselves into.
"Well," Nadia said, standing up, "we’ve officially made a terrible decision."
I laughed. "You were the one who said you were curious."
"I can be curious and terrified at the same time."
We headed downstairs for breakfast, and by the time we reached the dining room, I had decided that I would send the message after eating. I wasn’t going to rush into anything while my thoughts were all over the place. Nadia, however, seemed incapable of thinking about anything else. She kept glancing at me every few minutes, as if checking whether I had changed my mind.
We had barely started eating when Callum walked into the dining room. "Morning."
"Good morning, Dad," Nadia said brightly.
I smiled at him as well. "Good morning."
He pulled out a chair and sat with us, taking a few spoons of his breakfast while looking between us.
His eyes lingered on our faces for a moment longer than usual. "What are you two smiling about?"
Nadia immediately looked down at her plate. "Nothing."
Callum narrowed his eyes slightly. "Nothing?"
"We’re just having breakfast," I quickly chirped in.
He looked at us again, clearly unconvinced, but he didn’t press. After a few more minutes, he placed his spoon down and stood. "I have some matters to handle with the pack. Neither of you is leaving the estate today."
Nadia nodded immediately. "Of course."
I smiled. "We won’t."
His gaze moved between us again, and something about the way we had answered so easily seemed to bother him. He didn’t say anything, though. "Stay indoors, both of you. If anything happens, call me immediately. I don’t care whether you think it’s important or not. If something feels wrong, you call."
"We will," Nadia promised.
I nodded as well. "We promise."
Callum gave us one last look before leaving. The moment he disappeared from sight, Nadia leaned closer to me. "That was too easy."
"Don’t say that." I hissed.
She shrugged. "I’m just saying."
"Eat your breakfast." I rolled my eyes.
She laughed quietly, and I couldn’t help smiling as I reached for my phone beneath the table.
I opened the message thread and typed the number from the letter. My fingers hovered over the screen for a moment before I finally sent a simple message. ’I want to meet.’
The reply came almost immediately. ’Then come here.’ A location followed and I stared at it.
Nadia leaned over my shoulder. "That’s fast."
"Too fast." I nodded and looked at location again before locking my phone. "We’re still going."
Nadia sighed. "I knew you were going to say that."
We finished breakfast and went upstairs to prepare. Nadia treated the whole thing like we were going on some ridiculous mission, opening her wardrobe and pulling out different outfits while asking me what she should wear.
"What about this?"
I looked at the dress she was holding. "That’s fine."
"Fine isn’t good enough." She groaned.
"Nadia, we’re not going to a party."
"I know. That’s why I’m asking. If something happens, I need to be able to move." She palmed herself in the face.
I stared at her as she held up another outfit. "This one?"
"You’ve thought about this far too much."
She didn’t look like she was joking. "I’m serious. I need something comfortable enough to run in."
"You’re planning to run?" I raised a brow.
"If necessary." She nodded, dead serious.
I laughed. "Just wear whatever you want. We’ll be fine."
She stopped and looked at me. "Do you actually believe that?"
I hesitated. "No."
"Exactly." She finally chose an outfit and began getting dressed. "And I’m bringing something in case we need to defend ourselves."
"What exactly are you bringing?" I looked up at her.
She gave me a mysterious smile. "You’ll see."
I shook my head, laughing as I got ready myself. Neither of us said it aloud, but we were both nervous. We had no idea who was waiting at the location, and the fact that the man had somehow obtained my mother’s ring made the whole thing feel far more serious than a simple meeting.
When we finally came downstairs, we were stopped before we could reach the front entrance.
Becca was standing nearby and she looked from Nadia to me, then toward the door. "Where are you two going?"
Nadia and I exchanged a quick glance and I forced a smile.
Oh fuck.
This could go really badly.
