Callum’s POV

The next morning after staying up most of the night, I was barely awake when the knock came at my door.

I opened my eyes to find one of the guards standing outside, his expression serious enough to make me sit up immediately.

For a moment, I had no idea what was happening. My mind was still on Keisha, wondering whether she had woken during the night and whether Nadia had called me, but the guard’s first words made every bit of sleep disappear. "Alpha, the prisoner is dead."

I stared at him. "What?"

"The assassin we captured yesterday," he clarified, lowering his voice. "He was found dead in his cell this morning."

I was out of bed before he finished speaking. "What happened?"

"We don’t know yet. The guards discovered him during their morning check and immediately called the doctor."

I didn’t bother asking anything else. I followed him through the corridors toward the prison, my thoughts already moving faster than I could keep up with.

The assassin had been alive when Dane and I left him. He had been guarded. He had been questioned for hours and had refused to tell us anything, but he had still been alive when we walked away.

Now he was dead.

When I reached the cell, the doctor was already examining him. She looked up when I entered and immediately stood. "Alpha."

"How did he die?"

She shook her head. "I’m still examining him, but there are no obvious wounds. Nothing that suggests he was attacked."

I looked at the body and then back at her. "Then what killed him?"

"I can’t say for certain yet." She carefully checked him again before continuing. "But from what I’ve seen so far, it looks like he may have consumed something shortly before his death."

My jaw tightened. "Poison?"

"It is possible. I need to run more tests before I can confirm that."

I turned toward the guards standing outside the cell. "Search the entire room. The floor, the bedding, the food, the water. Everything. I want to know what he consumed and how he got it."

"Yes, Alpha."

"And don’t touch anything until the doctor has finished examining it." I ordered.

The guards immediately moved to obey.

I remained there for another moment, staring at the man who had been our only chance of learning anything about the organization. Orin had been killed before he could finish speaking, and now the person responsible for killing him was dead too.

Two people gone with no answers.

I walked out of the cell with my hands clenched at my sides.

I found Riven near the main hall. He had clearly heard about the incident already because his expression changed as soon as he saw me. "I heard the prisoner died," he said.

I nodded. "He did."

Riven studied my face before asking, "How is Keisha?"

"She is stable." I took a breath before continuing. "Still unconscious."

His expression softened. "I’m sorry."

"She was checked throughout the night. The doctor says the babies are fine, but she hasn’t woken up yet."

Riven nodded slowly. "I honestly didn’t expect your pack to be dealing with this much chaos before the war even properly begins."

"Neither did I. It’s a lot."

Riven gave a small nod. "Whatever happens, you have my support."

I looked at him for a moment before nodding. "Thank you. I appreciate it."

Riven gave my shoulder a brief squeeze before moving away.

I continued toward the prison again, where Dane was already waiting for me.

He had been speaking with the guards, but he turned as soon as I approached. "You heard?"

"Yes."

He glanced toward the cell. "No sign of forced entry."

We walked around the prison together, examining the corridors and the cell from outside. There were no damaged locks, no broken windows and no obvious signs that someone had entered during the night. Everything looked exactly as it should have.

"How did someone get close enough to give him something?" I asked.

Dane shook his head. "That’s what we need to find out."

We called the guards who had been stationed outside the prison overnight.

One of them stepped forward. "Alpha."

"You were on duty the entire night?" I asked.

"Yes."

"Did anyone enter?" I questioned.

The man shook his head. "No."

"Did anyone leave?"

"No." His voice remained steady.

I stared at them. "And you’re certain?"

"Yes, Alpha."

Dane looked at them carefully. Something about their answers clearly bothered him too.

The guards had no explanation for how the prisoner could have gotten something dangerous enough to kill him.

I looked at the cell again.

There had been no break-in and yet our prisoner was dead.

I dismissed the guards and walked away with Dane.

"They’re lying," Dane said quietly.

I looked at him. "You think they know something?"

Dane nodded. "To an extent. They know something."

I sighed. "Change the rotation. And find out what they know."

Dane nodded.

The organization had lost one of its own before we could make him talk.

As Dane and I headed toward the hall, one of the elders approached us. "Alpha."

I stopped. "What is it?"

He bowed his head slightly. "We received the file Keisha submitted to us. There’s apparently a rebellion starting. We’ve begun looking through it carefully."

A rebellion? What had Keisha been doing behind my back?

For a second, I wondered if that was where she had been coming from the previous night. But Nadia was with her. Were they sneaking around together or something?

I didn’t let the shock I felt show. "And?"

"We haven’t reached a final conclusion yet, but there is enough information in it for us to investigate the people named. We don’t want you distracted from the war, so we wanted to let you know that we’ll be handling this."

I nodded slowly. "Thank you."

A rebellion was insane. It meant there were people within my own pack apparently working against me.

But it gave me ease that some of my elders were still on my side.
