Chapter 184: WHAT HER MOTHER LEFT BEHIND

Keisha’s POV

Klein became quieter after telling me that there were things connected to my mother that I didn’t know about.

He glanced around the area before sitting down on one of the benches nearby, and I remained standing for a moment because I was still trying to process everything he’d said.

The organization, the people after me, the reason he had stayed away for so long; it was becoming difficult to separate what I already knew from what I was hearing for the first time.

"Let’s start with why I contacted you," he said, finally looking up at me. "You need to understand that the people attacking you aren’t acting independently. I’ve been following their movements for some time, and every piece of information keeps leading back to the same organization."

I sat beside him. "The organization Callum and Dane raided?"

Klein’s eyebrows lifted. "So you already know about them."

"They found their hideout. There was nobody there when they arrived, but we’ve suspected that the people connected to it haven’t disappeared. Callum believes Orin was involved with them." I frowned. "What exactly is this organization?"

"They don’t have a proper name. At least, none that anyone has been able to confirm. They move from place to place, use different identities and never leave enough information behind for anyone to trace them properly. People who have encountered them simply started calling them No Name."

I looked at him carefully. "And they’re assassins?"

"Among other things. Their entire operation revolves around people who can be hired, manipulated or ordered to remove someone. They don’t care whether the target is influential, wealthy or protected. If the person who hires them has enough to offer, they’ll find a way to get close."

My stomach tightened.. "So the maid..."

He nodded. "Was almost certainly connected to them."

I looked down at my hands.

Klein continued, "I’ve been investigating them for a while, but the organization is difficult to penetrate because very few of the people working for it know who is actually in charge. Most of them receive instructions through intermediaries. The people at the bottom don’t even know who they’re working for."

"Then how do you know there’s a leader?"

"Because organizations don’t run themselves." He muttered.

I gave him a frustrated look. "That’s not exactly an answer that could help."

"I know that. I’m telling you what I’ve been able to establish." He leaned forward, resting his elbows against his knees. "I’ve traced several operations back to the same source, and there are patterns in the way they’re handled. Whoever is giving the final orders is careful, patient and extremely protective of her identity."

"Her?" I asked in surprise.

Klein nodded.

"You’re certain?"

"As certain as I can be without having seen her myself. Every trail I’ve followed eventually points toward a woman. I haven’t been able to identify her yet, but I’m still investigating." He nodded.

I stared at him. "And you think she’s the one trying to kill me?"

"I think she’s connected to the people trying to kill you. Whether she’s personally ordered every attempt is something I haven’t established yet."

I rubbed my hands together nervously. "So all this time, the person sending those letters..."

"Was me trying to warn you."

I looked at him sharply. "Then why didn’t you just come to me?"

He looked away. "Because I wasn’t ready to expose myself."

I let out a quiet breath. "You left us once because you thought staying away was safer. Now you’re telling me you stayed away again because you thought it was safer."

"Not exactly." He reached into the bag beside him. "The first time, I left because I was grieving and because I believed I could protect you better from a distance. I was wrong about that. I should have stayed. I can’t undo what happened, but I can stop making the same mistake." He pulled out a folder and placed it on my lap. "I came back because I found something that belongs to you."

I opened the folder and stared at the first document.

My mother’s name was printed across the top and I blinked. "What is this?"

"Something your mother left behind."

I turned another page and saw the name of a company I had never heard of. "This is hers?"

"Yes."

I looked at him in disbelief. "My mother owned a company?"

"She did." he nodded.

"Why have I never heard about it?" confusion dripped in my words.

"Because she didn’t want you to."

I looked through the papers again, trying to make sense of what I was seeing. There were financial records, ownership documents and information about assets I couldn’t even begin to understand. "How did you get all this?"

"Your mother gave it to me."

"When?" I looked up at him for a second.

He didn’t smile. "After she married your father."

I looked up. "Why would she give you her company?"

"Because she trusted me with it. Your father already had more wealth than either of us could have imagined, and your mother didn’t believe you or Lyra would ever need her fortune. She told me to hold it for her and keep it untouched unless her children ever needed it." He sighed.

I stared at the documents. "My mother never told me any of this. Why?"

"Because she wanted you to grow up without worrying about money. She believed your father would take care of both of you, and she was right for a while." He explained.

My fingers tightened around the papers. "What happened?"

"Your father died first. After that, your mother lost contact with me. Not long afterward, she died too." His voice softened. "By the time I found out what had happened, you and Lyra were already under Callum’s protection."

I swallowed hard. "So this has been sitting somewhere all these years?"

"I kept it secure. I continued managing the company and the assets because your mother specifically asked me to. I didn’t touch what belonged to you or Lyra. I only made sure it remained intact."

I looked down at the documents again. "And now?"

He looked at the documents. "Now I’m giving you what belongs to you."

I slowly looked up.

"Both you and Lyra will receive a subsidiary of the fortune. It’s not everything your mother left behind, but it’s enough to give both of you something that was meant to be yours from the beginning."

I shook my head, overwhelmed. "I don’t even know what to say."

"You don’t have to say anything." He smiled slightly.

"I don’t understand why she never told me." My voice cracked.

"Because she was your mother. She probably thought she was protecting you." He whispered.

My eyes began to sting. I looked at her name printed across the documents again, they seemed like another piece of her I had somehow lost without even knowing it existed. And I started to miss her again. "She really planned all this?"

Klein nodded. "She wanted you to have something of your own."

I wiped beneath my eye before the tears could fall. "I miss her."

Klein didn’t interrupt me.

I looked down at the folder, trying to keep myself together, but my mother’s name was everywhere. It was on the company documents, the ownership records, the papers she had signed years ago. It was proof that she had once sat somewhere and made plans for me, thinking about my future when I was too young to understand any of it.

"I spent so many years thinking she left me with nothing," I whispered.

Klein’s voice was gentle when he answered. "She didn’t, Keisha. She left you more than you knew."

I pressed the documents against my chest, and the tears finally slipped down my cheeks.

Fuck, I missed her so much.
