Chapter 93: [93] "An unexpected Last Training Session in Black and Gold"
But Luc arrived behind Idriss. The benefit of two natural strikers playing together.
He didn’t break stride. He met the cross on the half-volley with the inside of his left boot and redirected it into the bottom corner before the keeper had finalized his diving direction.
Early Goal!
1-0.
Only at minute nine.
Gabriel’s first few touches of his first competitive match at SC Valois had produced an assist. His delivery scrumptious.
The locker room was baffled at halftime, they had just watched a twenty-two-year-old Brazilian winger completely dismantle a Ligue Alpha left back for forty-five minutes and was processing the implications of what that meant for the rest of the season.
Gabriel sat on the bench, a towel around his neck, drinking water with the same composed attention he brought to everything.
Cillian dropped onto the bench beside him. "That cross in the ninth minute," Cillian said. "Where did that come from?"
Gabriel looked at him. "The right side of the pitch." His english wasn’t the best, and he couldn’t speak French at all.
"No, I mean-- it was perfectly weighted. Most wingers either overhit the cross and it runs out the far side or they hit it too soft and the keeper collects it. Yours arrived exactly between the two. It’s a difficult delivery."
Gabriel drank his water. "The defender was too close to the near post. The goalkeeper was positioned wrongly. The gap was really at the far post." He held up his right hand and drew the path through the air with his finger. "I just played through the gap."
Cillian stared at him. "You calculated all of that while sprinting at full pace toward the byline."
"I wasn’t thinking about it," Gabriel said. "I just saw it."
Cillian turned to look at Luc across the locker room.
Luc raised his chin at him once.
Amadou’s defensive contribution in the first half had been quietly extraordinary.
Three times Normandie had tried to exploit the right side of the SC Valois defensive shape, targeting what they perceived as a weakness given Aubert’s tendency to push forward and leave space behind him coupled with Gabriel never tracking back.
Three times Amadou had read the run of the Normandie wide forward, stepped across to cover, and won the ball cleanly without a foul and without drama.
On the third occasion, a Normandie midfielder had received the ball at the edge of the penalty area with Amadou apparently out of position. The midfielder had shaped to shoot with what should have been a clear line.
Amadou had appeared from his blind side before the shot was struck, blocking the attempt with his shin and clearing it to Blažek.
It was a defensive intervention that required reading the midfielder’s body shape before the ball had arrived. Before the shot intention had been confirmed.
---
The second half produced two more goals.
Hugo in the sixty-first from a Klaus assist, a driven diagonal that found the teenager arriving late at the far post, his first touch wrong-footing the keeper before the finish.
2-0.
Gabriel in the seventy-eighth, his first competitive goal in SC Valois colors, a solo run from the halfway line that left the Normandie right back stationary and then a finish with his weaker left foot into the near post that had no business going in at the angle it was struck from.
But it went in.
3-0.
Gabriel ran toward the away end with his arms out, the guy in yellow hoodie replaced by the black and gold of the Valois kit, but the energy underneath it identical to the humble man who had climbed out of a cab a few days ago.

[You just knocked them out of the cup, but they beat you 2-0 at home earlier in the league. Still apply caution]
"When have I ever not been cautious," Luc said to himself.
Luc walked off the pitch with his hand on the captain’s armband and carrying the weight of a squad that was starting to look less like a collection of individuals and more like something that had been deliberately constructed.
Whether the construction held again against Normandie in six days was the next question.
---
The news arrived on the twenty-fourth.
Not from Valérie. Not from Henri. From Bastien himself.
He came to training on the morning three days before MD19. He trained well. He was sharp, focused, and showed no hesitation in his movement.
He stayed after the morning session, the break before the afternoon session, while the rest of the squad filtered toward the changing rooms.
He found Luc at the edge of the pitch, collecting the last of the tactical cones from the press-trap drill.
"I’ve accepted a transfer," Bastien said.
Luc stacked the cones.
"Paris Royal," Bastien said.
The name sat in the air for a moment.
"They’ve been watching me since the Phocéen match," Bastien continued. "Their scout was at that game. And the Tensé cup match. And the Lyon B game." He crossed his arms, not defensively, it was the way people did when they were just cold. "They want me as a squad player with a pathway to starting. One of their midfielders is thirty-one and they’re planning a transition."
Luc picked up the cone bag. "Paris Royal."
"I know how it sounds."
"It sounds like the club that beat the shit out of us just signed one of our best young players," Luc said. "That’s exactly what it sounds like because that’s what it is."
Bastien held his ground. "It’s the best contract offer I’ve ever seen. It’s Paris Royal. When that phone call comes, you answer it."
Luc walked toward a different area of the training pitch. "No," Luc said, not stopping. "But I understand."
Bastien followed him. "You’re not angry?" Bastien said. More of a confused observation than a question.
Luc dropped the cone bag in the equipment corner at a section off the pitch. "I’m a twenty-year-old striker from America who signed for SC Valois on an initial rookie contract because of a girl. Bro, I’m not going to tell you what to do with the hand you were dealt."
"Hugo’s going to be irritated though."
