Chapter 757: But Then Again
"Of course, then again, Mr. Grant, if you behave yourself and try to earn some leniency from Chloe, you still have a chance." Fiona Linton’s words took a sharp turn. She immediately looked at Chloe Reed, grinning. "After all, you two are still husband and wife. You can think about other things when that’s no longer the case."
Chloe Reed looked at her with suspicion. Fiona had been acting a bit strange the past two days.
’Why does it seem like she’s speaking up for Walker?’
’Hasn’t she always hated Walker?’
Feeling Chloe’s stare, Fiona felt a pang of guilt. She touched her nose, averted her gaze, and cleared her throat. "COUGH... Um, well, I’m just offering my two cents as an observer, you know? Don’t mind me."
Chloe Reed typed on her phone: "You’re not wrong. I won’t be thinking about my love life until the current problems are solved."
Fiona Linton immediately breathed a sigh of relief. ’I felt like I just lost a million brain cells!’
’Walking that back was so hard!’
’But hey, I pulled it off!’
’Yep, I’m the best!’
’I definitely earned that money!’
She had neither spoken against her conscience nor contradicted Chloe’s point.
Fiona Linton felt awesome!
Walker Grant, however, was far from satisfied with this answer, but he couldn’t press the issue, knowing she would get angry.
Silence fell inside the car.
The driver took them straight back to Jardinelle. As she was dropping Walker Grant off, Chloe Reed typed on her phone, "Fiona and I are going to hang out for a bit. Do you want anything?"
Walker Grant’s tone lifted slightly. "Are you getting me a gift? I’ll love anything, as long as it’s from you."
Chloe Reed: "..."
She gave up on talking to him, turned, and left.
But his voice, full of anticipation, followed her. "I’ll wait for you."
Chloe Reed: "..."
Once back in the car, she let out a long sigh.
Fiona Linton, who had moved to the back seat, couldn’t help but laugh at her expression. "A little taken aback by how clingy he is?"
Chloe Reed typed on her phone: "He wasn’t like this before."
"It’s because he’s insecure," Fiona Linton said. "You must have given him a ton of confidence before, making him believe that you would never leave him, no matter what. That’s why he took you for granted and ignored your feelings. But the day you actually decided you were done, he started to panic. He became clingy and neurotic, completely insecure."
Chloe Reed blinked, a flash of surprise in her clear eyes. Her fingers flew across the screen, and even the cold, electronic female voice seemed tinged with confusion. "You seem to understand this really well."
Fiona Linton’s eyes flickered. "I’ve seen this movie before. My parents’ relationship was a lot like yours. They never got legally married, so my dad was always really insecure. Wherever my mom went, he’d follow."
Hearing this, Chloe Reed was even more surprised. From what Fiona had said about her parents in the past, Chloe had always assumed they were a deeply loving couple. ’They never got married?’
A look of reminiscence, tinged with a faint sadness, clouded Fiona Linton’s eyes. "My mom is a very free-spirited person. She hates being tied down. She got with my dad on a whim. When she felt like she’d had enough fun, she wanted out, so naturally, marrying him was out of the question. But who knew? From that point on, my dad just latched onto my mom and never let go."
