Chapter 589 - 588: Each Takes What They Need
At nearly 7:00 on Sunday morning, Yan Feifan quickly ate his breakfast and hurried to the Affiliated Hospital’s library, accompanied by Duan Yu.
He had thought he was more than early enough.
After all, the hospital library didn’t open as early as a university library; its doors wouldn’t open until eight o’clock.
But to his surprise, as soon as he rounded an inpatient building, he saw a long line of over a hundred people snaking back and forth in the shade in front of the library.
The sight made his heart turn to ice.
For the first year or two after graduating from medical school and starting his official work at the Affiliated Hospital, Yan Feifan was so busy he worked from before sunrise until after sunset every day.
On the rare occasion he had time off, he would be so exhausted that he’d just hole up at home in Happiness Garden. He never had the spare time to come study at the Affiliated Hospital’s library.
Yan Feifan had never imagined that the Affiliated Hospital’s library would be in even higher demand and more popular than a university library.
Clinging to a sliver of hope, Yan Feifan walked to the front of the winding line and asked loudly, "Excuse me, but how many of you are in line for the Medical Imaging Viewing Room?"
Before the words had even left his mouth, a sea of hands shot up.
Yan Feifan’s eyes swept over the crowd and saw that more than half the people in line—at least sixty of them—had raised their hands.
’Well, that’s it. No chance at all!’
Disappointed, Yan Feifan turned to leave, but he suddenly heard someone calling out from behind him.
"Mr. Yan... Mr. Yan..."
Yan Feifan stopped and turned around again.
He saw a sharp-looking young man with slicked-back hair, who had been fourteenth in line, step out and walk quickly toward him.
"Mr. Yan, if you’re going to the Medical Imaging Viewing Room, you can take my spot."
Yan Feifan quickly refused. "I couldn’t, I couldn’t!"
"You got up at the crack of dawn and worked so hard to get this spot. How could I just take the fruit of your labor?"
The young man with the slicked-back hair chuckled. "Mr. Yan, I’m Pan Jichuan, a resident in general surgery."
"I came to line up early this morning for the Medical Imaging Viewing Room because I want to observe and study the vascular suture techniques of a few medical pioneers."
"There’s still an hour until the library opens."
"During this hour, Mr. Yan, how about you give me a few pointers on vascular suture techniques?"
Pan Jichuan said with a grin, "That way, I get your guidance and learn what I came here to learn. And you, Mr. Yan, can take my spot with a clear conscience."
"We’ll each get what we want."
Yan Feifan sized up the young man before him again, then nodded with a light smile. "That’s not a bad proposal. It’s true that we’d each be getting what we want."
"But I still have to thank you."
After a slight pause, Yan Feifan continued, "Vascular suture is a practical skill. A verbal explanation alone isn’t very effective."
"I have some important things to attend to these next two days..."
Yan Feifan mulled it over for a moment before saying, "Pan Jichuan, if you’re not in a hurry, you can come find me at my office in the Little Red House on Wednesday afternoon. Bring some vascular tissue for practice."
Pan Jichuan nodded eagerly, his voice filled with excitement. "Wednesday afternoon, the Little Red House office."
"Mr. Yan, I’ll be there on time..."
Hearing this exchange, the young doctors in the surrounding line were all kicking themselves with regret.
Who was this Yan Feifan standing before them?
He was the hospital’s universally acknowledged genius doctor, with surgical skills second to none. At a minimum, he was destined to become a medical academician in the future.
If only they had been a little quicker on the uptake, a little faster to react, they could have seized this opportunity to get acquainted with Mr. Yan and receive his personal guidance.
Enduring the envious, jealous, and resentful stares of the crowd, Pan Jichuan escorted Yan Feifan to the spot where he had been waiting in line.
He carefully exchanged a few more words with Yan Feifan, but when he heard a phone ring, he tactfully took a few steps back.
Yan Feifan took out his phone and saw it was a call from Deng Shao.
The previous night, after speaking with the mysterious leader Duan Yu had mentioned, Yan Feifan had informed Deng Shao of his decision.
He would take on the brain tumor patient from the United States.
Given the severity of the patient’s condition and his own schedule, Yan Feifan hoped to schedule the surgery for tomorrow. He also wanted to depart for home immediately after the operation was finished.
Deng Shao had said he would make the arrangements...
"Mr. Yan, the plane has been arranged."
Deng Shao explained over the phone, "It’s a Gulfstream G650, departing from Binhai International Airport at 7:20 tonight."
"If all goes well, you should be back in Binhai by around five or six o’clock on Tuesday morning, Mr. Yan."
Yan Feifan replied with satisfaction, "Perfect. I can’t let this delay my surgery on Wednesday morning."
Deng Shao’s voice came through again. "Mr. Yan, I will be accompanying you to the United States this time."
"This private jet can carry over a dozen passengers."
"If you happen to have any family or friends who need to go to the United States for business or pleasure, they’re welcome to hitch a ride."
Yan Feifan let out a soft "Oh," then replied quietly, "This time, only my assistant, Duan Yu, will be accompanying me to the United States."
"As for anyone else..."
He thought for a moment. "Let me ask around."
"If there’s anyone else joining, I’ll let you know before 3:00 PM, Mr. Deng..."
After ending the call with Deng Shao, Yan Feifan immediately sent a message to his small family-and-friends group chat.
He hadn’t even put his phone down before it rang again.
It was a call from Wang Chuan.
"Feifan, you’ve really decided to go to the United States?"
Yan Feifan grunted in affirmation, then explained further, "It’s good money, there’s nothing to worry about, and my safety is guaranteed. Of course I’m going to make the trip."
"Director, a luxury private jet will fly me there and back directly. I’ll be back in Binhai early Wednesday morning."
"Are you sure there won’t be any safety issues?" Wang Chuan pressed over the phone.
Yan Feifan answered vaguely, "Someone told me I can go to the United States without any worries."
"I’m a doctor. I perform surgery to save people. What danger could there be? Besides, Mr. Deng, a man with a net worth of over ten billion, will be accompanying me the whole time."
After a moment of silence, Wang Chuan’s voice came through the phone again.
"Yanyan’s mother has pretty much finished her business here. She was planning to return to the United States in the next two or three days anyway."
"I’ll ask her in a bit if she wants to hitch a ride on your private jet for a comfortable trip back."
"Also..."
Wang Chuan also said vaguely, "Yanyan’s mom has been building her career in Los Angeles for over a decade. You could say she’s a well-connected local."
"Whether on the right side of the law or the wrong side, she knows people from all walks of life."
"Feifan, if anything really does happen, go find her. She should be able to help you out a little."
Yan Feifan was touched. "Director, I understand. If anything happens, I’ll go find Mrs. Zhong..."
As Yan Feifan hung up, Pan Jichuan scurried over again and offered eagerly, "Mr. Yan, I’ll hold your spot in line."
"Once it’s eight o’clock, Mr. Yan, you can come straight to the viewing room. Just give me a quick buzz."
Yan Feifan politely declined his kind offer, saying he would wait himself. Then his phone rang again.
This time, it was surprisingly a call from Tang Jun, the editor-in-chief of the university’s medical journal.
"Mr. Yan, am I interrupting you?"
"The August issue of the journal, which features your paper on penis reconstruction surgery, has been printed. Should I have a few copies sent over to you?"
Yan Feifan rolled his eyes. "Mr. Tang, you’re calling so early. Just get straight to the point."
Tang Jun chortled over the phone. "Mr. Yan, I listened to a recording of your lecture last night. It was very insightful."
"I was thinking of editing it for publication in the journal."
Yan Feifan replied nonchalantly, "Fine, but don’t publish it in the format of a research paper..."
After ending the call with Mr. Tang, Yan Feifan put his phone away again, only to see someone in a nurse’s uniform running toward him.
The young nurse was shouting as she ran, "Mr. Yan, Mr. Yan..."
Yan Feifan recognized her as a nurse from the trauma surgery department.
He quickly stepped out of the line to meet her.
"What happened?"
The young nurse said, gasping for breath, "That penis... ’guinea pig’... he’s back in the department."
"His... it’s swollen up like a carrot..."
