Chapter 587 - 586: It’s Him
In early August, Binhai University was still bustling, despite it being the middle of summer vacation.
There were over ten thousand freshmen enthusiastically undergoing military training, more than ten thousand professionals on campus for various training programs and activities, students who had stayed to study, and tourists from both out of town and the local area...
Despite its size, the campus was nearly as bustling as it was during the regular semester.
After 6:30 p.m., the summer heat began to fade.
A group of three young men and two young women, all dressed in camouflage pants and T-shirts, left Binhai University’s West Cafeteria. They strolled under the cool shade of the large trees, making their way slowly toward the medical school’s main auditorium.
They hadn’t gone more than a few steps when the girl on the far right of the group, who had her hair in a ponytail and slightly chubby cheeks, spoke up. "This Mr. Yan Feifan who’s giving the presentation tonight... who is he exactly? Do any of you know?"
The words were barely out of her mouth when the pretty girl holding her hand, who had a bob that ended just past her ears, replied excitedly, "Of course I know!"
"Yan Feifan. He’s twenty-five and works at the Affiliated Hospital."
"He got into our medical school when he was only fourteen, then graduated with honors two years ahead of schedule. He’s the only student in the history of our clinical medicine program to ever graduate early."
"He’s a total legend at our medical school, an academic god. He’s my idol!"
Just then, the chubby guy on the far left of the group pouted. "The most important thing for a doctor is practical experience—treating patients and saving lives," he said, sounding unconvinced.
"Book smarts don’t mean a thing. Even if you get a perfect score on every test, it’s all useless if you can’t apply that knowledge in the real world."
His comment immediately drew sideways glances from the other four.
The guy in the middle of the group was the tallest of them all.
He stood over 1.85 meters tall and had well-defined features, though his complexion was a bit tan.
He shot a look at the chubby guy. "Jia Mingtao, don’t just spout off opinions when you don’t know the facts. This is real life, not the internet."
"Mr. Yan might be young, but he’s already a special consultant for both the PLA General Hospital and Baining Hospital."
"Even if you don’t have any doctors in your family, you must have heard of those two hospitals. At the very least, you’ve heard of the PLA General Hospital, right?"
"That’s the designated hospital for the country’s top leaders."
"You can’t become a special consultant at the PLA General Hospital unless you have genuine, top-tier skills."
The chubby guy’s face flushed red. "I never said this Mr. Yan wasn’t skilled," he mumbled.
After a brief pause, he changed the subject. "But I heard that, according to our medical school’s tradition, they were supposed to have an academician give the first lecture."
"The rumor is that the academician wasn’t feeling well, so they brought in this young Mr. Yan as a last-minute replacement."
The tall guy scoffed lightly. "And where did you hear that? Let me tell you what really happened."
"The medical school leadership did invite an academician first. But the academician himself said that there was someone else more suitable for the job."
"And the person he recommended was Mr. Yan Feifan."
The chubby guy, Jia Mingtao, looked sheepish. "Oh, really? I guess what I heard was just an unreliable rumor."
"Well, in that case, let me tell you something that’s one hundred percent accurate."
He announced dramatically, "Mr. Shi Min, the so-called ’King of Killers’ of the medical school, officially retired just before the semester started!"
"That means when we take Physiological Anatomy, we won’t have to live in constant fear of failing."
"I heard Mr. Shi Min’s failure rate was at least thirty percent. And what’s even more terrifying..."
"...is that even if you scored a ninety, if he thought you got a question wrong that you had no business getting wrong, he’d still fail you and make you retake the class."
Hearing this, the girl with the ponytail couldn’t help but exclaim, "That’s horrifying! Thank goodness Mr. Shi Min retired."
But the tall guy’s voice was grave. "We should be lamenting the retirement of such a responsible teacher, not celebrating it."
"Physiological Anatomy is one of the most fundamental courses. As a medical student, you shouldn’t be making any mistakes. A perfect score should be the only passing grade."
The pretty, short-haired girl couldn’t help but roll her eyes at that.
"A perfect score in Mr. Shi Min’s class?"
"Don’t be so naive."
"Let me tell you, in all the years Mr. Shi Min has been teaching, only one person has ever gotten a perfect score in his class."
"As for who that was... I don’t even have to say it for you to guess."
Amid a chorus of surprised gasps, the short-haired girl craned her neck to look past the tall guy at another boy, who was standing there with his lips pressed into a tight line.
This guy wasn’t short either, standing over 1.8 meters tall. He had long eyebrows, almond-shaped eyes, and a high-bridged nose—he was quite handsome.
"Yan Zhizhen, why are you being so quiet?"
"This isn’t like you at all!"
The boy called Yan Zhizhen gave a small smile. "I don’t know anything about this Mr. Yan, so I’ve just been listening to you all."
After a pause, he urged, "It’s almost time. We should hurry to the auditorium..."
Meanwhile, in a break room behind the stage of the medical school’s main auditorium, Yan Feifan was making small talk with the Vice Dean in charge of student affairs and the Youth League Branch Secretary, who were accompanying him.
The Vice Dean and the Branch Secretary were both administrators. Although they had graduated from the medical program in their youth, so many years had passed that they had forgotten most of their specialized knowledge.
They could only chat with Yan Feifan about current events and amusing stories from the medical world, but these weren’t topics he typically followed.
As a result, after just a few minutes, the conversation became painfully awkward.
This was mostly because they would proactively raise a topic, and Yan Feifan would offer only a perfunctory, one-sentence reply.
The Vice Dean was at a loss for words.
He knew, however, that Yan Feifan wasn’t a social person—a common failing among geniuses.
The Vice Dean was just a little worried about how tonight’s lecture would go.
’He hoped Yan Feifan wouldn’t turn this inaugural lecture for the freshmen into a dry, flavorless sermon.’
Just then, the Branch Secretary found a new topic.
"Mr. Yan, I heard you’re helping to plan a celebration for Associate Professor Shi Min’s thirtieth anniversary of teaching."
Yan Feifan grunted in acknowledgment and, for once, offered a detailed explanation. "It’s mostly Sun Le, a doctor at the Affiliated Hospital, who’s organizing it with a few others."
"I’m just lending my name to it. I haven’t actually done anything."
He then turned to the Vice Dean and asked, "Mr. Shi is about to retire. Can’t the medical school rehire him as a post-retirement adjunct?"
The Vice Dean sighed. "Mr. Yan, although Mr. Shi is a rigorous teacher and is deeply..."
"...respected, he isn’t irreplaceable."
"Freeing up a faculty position allows us to either cultivate a new talent from within or recruit one from outside."
The Vice Dean then asked, "Mr. Yan, have you ever considered a part-time teaching position here at the medical school?"
Yan Feifan quickly shook his head. "Dean, I really don’t have the spare time to teach here right now..."
They continued their casual chat for a little while longer, until the sound of a loud, unified chorus drifted in.
"The sun sets in the west, rosy clouds aglow, the soldiers at the shooting range..."
The Vice Dean glanced at his watch and stood up. "Mr. Yan, it’s almost seven. We should get ready."
Yan Feifan grunted in agreement, stood up, and left the break room to use the restroom.
When he came out, he found Duan Yu waiting for him.
"Mr. Yan, we found him."
Duan Yu leaned in close to Yan Feifan and said in a hushed voice, "Based on the sketch you provided, we narrowed it down to five individuals. After cross-referencing multiple data points and a process of elimination, we’ve confirmed one person’s identity."
"It’s him..."
Yan Feifan glanced at the phone Duan Yu handed him. On the screen was a middle-aged military officer in a United States uniform.
"His name is Nathan Ellington. He’s an admiral in the United States Navy, the Vice Chief of Naval Operations."
Duan Yu leaned in even closer. "Mr. Yan, after your lecture is over, a certain leader would like to have a word with you..."
