Chapter 73
"Everything ready?" Officer Jenny asked as she walked over.
Mike nodded. "Don’t worry. This place is perfect."
Officer Jenny surveyed the surrounding area.
There were plenty of Bug-type Pokémon nearby, so it really was an ideal location for an educational livestream.
"Thanks for helping. I’ll submit a request afterward and see whether I can get them to increase your payment."
"Well, since you put it that way... thank you."
Mike’s smile immediately widened.
"By the way, you brought Marill along too?" Officer Jenny asked, looking toward Marill, who was helping nearby with her faded shoulder bag hanging from her shoulder.
"I didn’t want to leave her at home with nothing to do. She can play with Gengar and the others here, and besides..."
Mike glanced at Marill before continuing.
"If she happens to appear on camera during the livestream, there’s a chance the owner of that house might see her."
"That wouldn’t count as Marill deliberately going out of her way to bother her, right?"
"You..." Officer Jenny lightly punched Mike’s shoulder and smiled. "You’re surprisingly thoughtful."
Mike scratched his head. "It’s nothing. I was only thinking there’s always a chance..."
"After all, she’s already been waiting for so long."
"All right. We’ll do it your way."
Officer Jenny nodded, then asked, "Shall we begin?"
Mike turned toward Gengar.
"Gengar, start the livestream."
"Gar—"
Since Mike had left a message beneath his video the previous night announcing that he would stream that morning, plenty of viewers were already waiting for him.
[Route201Camper: What are you streaming today? Is there anything interesting to see?]
[MurkrowAfterDark: The final scene last time was incredible. I’m so glad I stayed until the end.]
[GreatBallGrinder: Damn it! I left early and missed everything!]
[SinnohNetizen: Did you record that part, Mike? Upload the video already!]
[RankedBattleVictim: It’s been ages. Where’s the video? I’m asking you where the video is!]
[PiplupSupremacy: ...]
[ZenZen00: The silent disappointment from PiplupSupremacy somehow hurts more than the yelling!]
"Stop rushing me. I’m still working on the video," Mike hurriedly explained.
In truth, he had been lazy and completely forgotten about it.
"Those of you who missed it don’t need to worry. I’ll upload the video within the next few days, so stop rushing me. I’ve been very busy."
Mike pointed toward Officer Jenny standing beside him.
"Look, I’m currently helping Officer Jenny with official business."
[EarlyRouteTrainer: She really is there.]
[GhostTypeMain: I honestly didn’t notice Officer Jenny until you pointed her out.]
[Propht: Using police work as an excuse for not uploading is bad!]
[Lamely_J: Officer Jenny, blink twice if he dragged you into covering for him!]
Officer Jenny glanced at the comments and tried not to laugh.
"Today’s livestream will focus on Bug-type Pokémon," Mike announced, smoothly changing the subject.
[Kamenriderzio218: Bug types again?]
[BugTypesAreTheCoolest: So you really are obsessed with bugs!]
[DefinitelyNotAFairyTypeFan: Are you seriously planning to replace Aaron as Sinnoh’s new Bug-type Elite Four member?!]
[DeathClan1980: Can we just stream Poké Battle again? The ranked matches were way more fun than whatever this is.]
"Me? A Bug-type Elite Four member? How could that happen?"
Mike shook his head.
"There’s no way my understanding of Bug-type Pokémon could surpass Elite Four Aaron’s."
"Anyway, the main purpose of today’s livestream is to work with Officer Jenny and teach everyone about Bug-type Pokémon in the wilderness."
Mike clapped his hands.
"Everyone, please pay attention if you have the time. Knowing this information could help you react properly if something unexpected happens while you’re traveling."
[SilentWatcher: ....]
[Siamus_404: I’m seated and ready to listen to Assistant Mike’s explanation]
[KricketuneManFan: Everyone sit down and hold on tight. Professor Mike’s class is beginning.]
[Dylan_Massey_2625: I brought snacks. Educate me about insects!]
"..."
Mike ignored the comments and raised one finger.
"I know most people think Bug-type Pokémon are weak, easy to defeat, and pose very little threat. But is that really true?"
"No, it isn’t. Just looking at the cases recorded by the Sinnoh League last year..."
Mike turned toward Officer Jenny and motioned for her to continue.
Officer Jenny hurriedly opened the file and searched through it.
At that moment, a highlighted comment crossed the screen.
[IReallyDontWantOvertime: 112.]
Mike stared at the username.
That name...
’Lucian is that you?’
Still, that number...
One hundred and twelve?
That many?
"That’s correct. There were one hundred and twelve cases," Officer Jenny said.
Mike nodded.
"One hundred and twelve. Is that a large number? Yes, it is. That’s a lot."
"According to the report, nearly all of those accidents involved Bug-type Pokémon."
"Some of you might now be asking, ’Mike, if Bug-type Pokémon are so weak, how could they cause so many injuries?’"
"Don’t worry. Next, I’ll help everyone understand Bug-type Pokémon on a deeper level."
With that, Mike led the way into the woods. The staff and Pokémon followed behind him.
He stopped beneath a tree and looked at a Caterpie crawling along one of its branches.
Mike reached up and carefully lifted it down. Its body felt smooth, soft, and slightly slippery in his hands.
Holding Caterpie in front of the camera, he explained, "Caterpie is considered one of the weakest Bug-type Pokémon. It’s also easy to catch, so many people recommend it as a beginner Trainer’s first Pokémon."
"Caterpie and its evolved form, Metapod, usually aren’t dangerous. However..."
Mike’s tone changed as he returned Caterpie to the tree.
He then looked toward a Butterfree gathering nectar nearby and waved.
"Could you come over and help me for a moment?"
To the amazement of the staff on location and the viewers watching the livestream, Butterfree really flew over and landed on Mike’s outstretched arm.
Mike lightly touched its antennae before bringing his arm closer to the camera.
"Everyone, this is Butterfree, Caterpie’s final evolved form. It’s a Bug- and Flying-type Pokémon. It looks just as gentle and harmless, doesn’t it?"
Mike asked Officer Jenny and the others to move farther away, then quietly spoke to Butterfree.
"Could you scatter some of your scales downwind for me?"
Butterfree looked at him curiously.
With the help of Mike’s Bug-Type Affinity, it became friendly as it nodded and took off from his arm.
It flew downwind and beat its wings, releasing countless tiny scales that drifted deeper into the woods.
"Did everyone see that? Those were scales from Butterfree’s wings. They contain toxins."
"The toxins aren’t especially deadly to humans, but if you accidentally inhale too much, you may develop symptoms similar to a cold or fever, along with dizziness and mental fog."
"When you’re traveling through the wilderness, being in poor condition can give other wild Pokémon an opportunity to attack."
[Stag6nant: So the cute butterfly can basically give you a fever and leave you helpless in the forest.]
[GrassTypeForever: Nature is beautiful until nature decides to poison you.]
[Dao_Of_The_Turtle: The softest wings may carry the harshest warning.]
Mike patted Butterfree’s head and let it return to gathering nectar.
He continued walking and pointed toward several Bug-type Pokémon.
"Now we’ll discuss the Bug-type Pokémon you should be especially careful not to provoke."
Mike held out his hand toward a Weedle eating leaves on a tree.
"Could you help me for a moment?"
Hearing him, Weedle wriggled its large body down the trunk, climbed onto Mike’s arm, and made its way to his shoulder.
"Weedle is a Bug- and Poison-type Pokémon. Don’t underestimate them. Some Weedle consume large amounts of poisonous food, which can increase the potency of the toxins inside their bodies."
"This is especially true of their final evolved form, Beedrill. Beedrill are extremely territorial Bug-type Pokémon."
"Everyone knows that if you encounter an entire swarm of Beedrill, running is usually the best choice. However, what I need to discuss today is Weedle’s middle evolution—Kakuna."
"Snivy."
Snivy nodded.
A vine extended from beside her neck and pulled a Kakuna out from behind a nearby bush.
Rustling immediately came from the surrounding vegetation.
A swarm of Beedrill emerged in front of Mike and the others.
Officer Jenny jumped in fright and instinctively prepared to grab Mike and run.
But Mike quickly clapped his hands.
"Everyone, I’m sorry for disturbing you. I have no intention of hurting Kakuna. I only want it to help with this explanation for a moment. Is that all right?"
The Beedrill swarm stared at Mike.
After sensing the aura around him that resembled one of their own, their hostility quickly weakened.
Then Mike’s Beedrill appeared.
He was a full size larger than the wild Beedrill, and the entire swarm immediately lowered its flying altitude.
Only a powerful Beedrill could lead a swarm, defend its territory, and protect the rest of its kind from enemies.
After seeing Mike’s Beedrill, the wild swarm showed clear submission.
[Sir_Yabas_III: Mike’s Beedrill entered the scene like a final boss!]
[BugTypesAreTheCoolest: That’s not a Beedrill. That’s the manager of the forest!]
[iMMadZodiacDev: The whole swarm lowered their altitude like the boss had arrived for an inspection.]
[Crow_of_approval : I approve this!]
Mike held Kakuna in his hands.
To be honest, this Kakuna was extremely light, nothing like how heavy his own Kakuna had once been.
’Being able to eat well is really a blessing.’
Mike sighed inwardly before lifting Kakuna in front of the camera.
"Looking at this Kakuna, do you all think it has no way to attack?"
He grinned, then touched the sickle-like limb on Kakuna’s chest.
He carelessly cut his finger against it.
"Everyone, look here. This sickle-shaped limb on Kakuna’s chest is its main means of attacking."
"It can stab this into an enemy’s body and inject poison."
Bubbles began floating out of Mike’s mouth.
He looked at them, then turned toward the camera.
"As for how strong that poison is... you can tell just by looking at me. I can already use Bubble Beam..."
Before he could finish, Snivy used Vine Whip to stuff a Pecha Berry into his mouth.
And Mike obediently began chewing.
[Route201Camper: DID HE JUST POISON HIMSELF FOR THE DEMONSTRATION?!]
[Slothy: Snivy has saved this man’s life so many times that it’s becoming a full-time job.]
[AweMazing: He touched the obvious blade and acted surprised when it cut him!]
[DeathClan1980: This is exactly why Poké Battle was better. At least he only died inside the game.]
Mike continued onward and explained every common Bug-type Pokémon they encountered.
Watching the growing crowd of Bug Pokémon gathered around him, Officer Jenny began to wonder whether Mike really could replace Aaron as Sinnoh’s new Bug-type specialist.
"So, as a final reminder, if you’re spending the night in the wilderness or currently traveling, never provoke Bug-type Pokémon unless absolutely necessary."
"Whether you become paralyzed or poisoned, either condition can pose a deadly threat in the wilderness."
"Please remember to carry Pecha Berries, Cheri Berries, Antidotes, or Paralyze Heals in your bag."
"The Pokémon themselves may not always be dangerous, but the status conditions they inflict can be."
"Of course, people with unusually powerful bodies are an exception."
Mike realized that his statement wasn’t completely precise and added one final qualification.
After all, judging by the original series, Ash and his friends were anything but ordinary humans.
Ash in particular used Thunderbolt to wake himself up every day.
He was practically superhuman.
Once the lesson ended, the viewers eagerly claimed they had remembered everything.
[SuperSquish: No wonder I always feel dizzy whenever I stand up after sitting for too long. A Bug-type Pokémon must’ve secretly attacked me.]
"Bro.. that’s low blood sugar."
[RogueArmarouge19: No wonder I get tired after walking for a while, start gasping for breath, and sometimes foam at the mouth. It always seemed strange.]
"You’re physically weak and dehydrated!"
[Yopleasee: No wonder—]
"Don’t."
[Jordan D’souza: LMAO he stopped the diagnosis before it even began!]
[Temptext: Mike’s livestream has turned into free medical consultations hahahaha.]
[Genie_Unshackled: Diagnosis: none of you drink enough water!]
Mike sat nearby with Marill in his arms, responding to the comments.
He looked down at Marill and gently flicked one of her ears.
"Say hello to everyone."
"Marill~"
[Avirup_Das: MARILL SPOTTED.]
[Keyos: Look at her little shoulder bag!]
[AshlesSmiley: She looks like she’s been working harder than Mike!]
Mike looked toward the camera.
’I hope the owner of that house sees this livestream.’
’Marill is still waiting for you because of the promise you made.’
