Pokémon: Raising Abandoned Pokémon into Legends

Goodra burst into tears under its trainer’s command. The crying was truly pitiful—heart-wrenching and sorrowful.

But... it was completely useless. Ghost-type Gengar is immune to Normal-type moves like Tearful Look. In fact, the Gengar looked more annoyed than anything else.

"Gengar~" Gengar raised its right hand and fired a Shadow Ball. The crying Goodra was sent flying seven or eight meters.

"How is this possible?! Why did Tearful Look have no effect on Gengar?!" The tall young man was shocked. "Is there something wrong with my sister’s Goodra?"

Case closed—it’s his sister’s Pokémon. This guy’s an idiot. Rio rolled his eyes, instantly understanding why someone would use a Normal-type move against a Ghost-type.

"You idiot! Ghost-types are immune to Normal- and Fighting-type moves! Tearful Look is Normal-type—of course it didn’t work! Gothitelle’s Fake Tears is Dark-type!" The Gothitelle trainer couldn’t help but yell.

The tall young man’s face flushed red. "Goodra, Acid Bomb!"

"Good~" Goodra spat corrosive liquid projectiles at Gengar.

Idiot—Gengar is Ghost/Poison-type. It has a quarter resistance to Acid Bomb. Rio was genuinely amused by the tall young man’s complete lack of basic Pokémon knowledge.

The level 55 Gengar faced Goodra’s Acid Bomb with a wide grin, punching the projectiles apart one by one. The corrosive poison was useless against it.

"Gengar~" Gengar then used Acid Bomb itself—larger and more potent—striking Goodra and drawing painful cries.

"Goodra, Water Pulse!" The tall young man quickly ordered.

"Good~" Goodra spat a spiraling water column—but Gengar used Sucker Punch, a Dark-type move, vanishing into the ground and reappearing behind Goodra, sending it flying with a single punch. Goodra was knocked out.

"Goodra..." The tall young man lamented.

Deserved. Rio commented.

"Don’t act so smug—you’ll lose just as badly." The tall young man retorted.

Rio smiled and said nothing. "Can you hurry up and finish your battles so I can have my turn?"

"Gengar~" The victorious Gengar bumped bellies with its partner, then beckoned toward Rio’s group.

The last of the three—a young man with a bowl cut—stepped forward. "Don’t worry—this Gengar will fall to me. Come out, Sableye!"

"Sable~" A flash of light—a level 52 Ghost/Dark-type Sableye appeared.

"Sableye, Shadow Sneak!" The bowl-cut young man gave the first command.

"Sable~" A shadow extended from Sableye’s feet, racing across the dark cave and appearing behind Gengar in an instant. It struck Gengar with its ghostly claws, drawing a pained cry.

Gengar had finally taken damage. Angrily, it turned and licked Sableye with its long tongue—using Lick, which paralyzed Sableye. Then came Shadow Punch—a flurry of phantom fists slamming into the paralyzed Sableye, sending it flying after seven or eight hits. But Sableye wasn’t defeated yet.

"Sableye, Shadow Ball!" The bowl-cut young man ordered.

"Sable~" Sableye fired a Shadow Ball. Gengar countered with its own Shadow Ball. The two moves collided, creating an explosion that shook the cave, forcing everyone to shield their eyes.

"Sableye, watch out—Gengar is going to ambush you!" The bowl-cut young man shouted, anticipating the attack.

"Sable~" Sableye pressed against the cave wall, on guard. Gengar cackled from within the smoke, using Sucker Punch to merge into the shadows and emerge from the wall behind Sableye. As the dust cleared, everyone saw Gengar deliver a heavy punch to Sableye’s back, sending it tumbling to the bowl-cut young man’s feet.

"Sableye, hang in there!" He gritted his teeth.

"Sable~" Sableye struggled to stand—only to face Gengar’s Dark Pulse. A wave of malicious energy surged toward it.

"Sableye, Shadow Sneak!" The bowl-cut young man commanded. The Dark Pulse hit nothing—Sableye had merged into the shadows, ambushing Gengar.

Gengar, sensing its attack would miss, quickly switched to Sucker Punch, also merging into the shadows. Both Pokémon vanished from the battlefield, each waiting for the other to surface.

"Don’t come out, Sableye!" The bowl-cut young man knew whoever emerged first would be at a disadvantage. After half a minute of waiting, Gengar grew impatient.

"Gengar~" It emerged from the shadows, visibly annoyed.

"Now, Sableye!" The bowl-cut young man shouted excitedly.

"Sable~" Sableye burst from Gengar’s shadow, claws aimed at its belly. But the frustrated Gengar revealed a cunning grin—it had been waiting. It swung Shadow Punch behind itself, landing blow after blow on Sableye, disorienting it. Though Sableye managed to stab Gengar’s belly, it took far more damage. Ultimately, Sableye was sent flying into the wall—and knocked out.

"Sableye!" The bowl-cut young man cried out in disbelief—he hadn’t expected this Gengar to be so cunning, using itself as bait to fool them.

The victorious Gengar grew even more smug, cackling and mocking the defeated group.

"Gengar~" Finally, it turned to the only one it hadn’t beaten—Rio. It beckoned, signaling him to release his Pokémon and take its beating. The other Gengar joined in, similarly taunting.

Rio watched the two smug Gengar, a smile playing on his lips. In his mind, Old Ghost’s voice echoed:

"Rio, if you don’t send me out to teach them a lesson, you’re seriously missing out."

Hearing that, Rio’s smile widened.

"What are you smiling at?! We lost, but that doesn’t mean you’ll win!" The defeated tall young man sneered. "Don’t get too cocky—that Gengar will beat your Pokémon like it’s nothing!"

Rio said nothing. Instead, he pulled out two Energy Roots and called out to the Gengar: "I won’t take advantage of you. Both of you can come at me together. And here—take these to recover your strength."

The three beside him were stunned. They couldn’t believe Rio was offering to fight two-on-one and even giving them healing items.

"Are you trying to poison them?! That will only enrage the Gengar! There are more than just these two here—if you break the rules, you’ll be making enemies of every Pokémon in the ruins! You’ll never get a Mega Stone again!" The Gothitelle trainer warned.

"Don’t drag us down with you!" The tall young man quickly called out to the Gengar: "This guy’s not with us! Whatever he does, it’s got nothing to do with us!"

Rio frowned at them. "Gengar~" The Gengar across from him eyed him coldly, also suspicious of his intentions.

"Fine, fine—no good deed goes unpunished." Rio shrugged, put the Energy Roots away, and pulled out Gengar’s Luxury Ball.

A flash of light—Old Ghost appeared. The pressure of its high level and legendary-tier talent instantly changed the atmosphere in the cave. The two Gengar, who had been staring coldly at Rio, had their expressions completely transformed. They felt the overwhelming presence of a superior.

"Gengar~" — You two juniors, come at me!

Old Ghost beckoned. Without attacking, it simply released the pressure of its Ghost-type aura. The two Gengar knelt in terror, unable to even think of attacking—as if facing the ancestor of their species.

"How is this possible?!" The tall young man, the Gothitelle trainer, and the bowl-cut young man were all dumbfounded. The two Gengar had surrendered without a fight.

Just then, the bowl-cut young man’s Sableye woke up after being fed an Energy Root. Immediately, it felt Old Ghost’s terrifying Ghost-type aura—and was equally stunned.

"What’s wrong, Sableye?!" The bowl-cut young man couldn’t understand.

"Gengar~" — Attack me now, or I’ll beat you two little runts myself!

Old Ghost grew impatient. The two Gengar exchanged glances, then attacked together—firing Shadow Balls at Old Ghost. Rio didn’t command a counter—he knew Old Ghost could handle itself.

And it did. Old Ghost formed its own Shadow Balls, launching them after the other two had fired. They met the incoming attacks a few meters away, exploding on contact—but Old Ghost’s Shadow Balls didn’t dissipate. They continued forward, striking the two Gengar and slamming them into the wall—one-hit KO.

The three beside Rio were utterly stunned. "How is that possible?! A single Gengar took out both of them?! Just how strong is this Gengar?!" The tall young man exclaimed. The others said nothing, staring blankly at Rio and his Gengar.

"Don’t worship me—I’m just a legend." Old Ghost’s smug voice echoed in their minds.

"A Gengar that can use telepathy!" The bowl-cut young man’s eyes widened in even greater shock.

Rio walked over to the defeated Gengar and fed them the Energy Roots he had put away. Half a minute later, they regained consciousness.

"Still think I was trying to poison you?" Rio smiled, showing them the Energy Roots.

The two Gengar exchanged glances, then looked at their rapidly healing bodies. "Gengar~" They both showed human-like regret, then looked at Old Ghost with fear.

"Gengar~" — What are you scared of? Old Ghost isn’t going to eat you!

Old Ghost scolded. "Gengar~" — You juniors have no manners. Call me ancestor! I’ve been alive for over two hundred years, you know!

The two Gengar bowed in submission. Old Ghost cackled with satisfaction. Rio rolled his eyes—he couldn’t understand their conversation, but he could tell Old Ghost was definitely intimidating them.

"Alright, enough—I’ve beaten you, so let me through to get the Mega Stone." Rio said.

"Gengar~" "Gengar~" Both Gengar nodded, pointing toward the path behind them. As they were about to lead the way, the level 55 Gengar pointed at the two men and one woman, who were now curious and clearly wanted to follow.

"I don’t know them. Do whatever you want." Rio said flatly. The Gengar immediately glared at the three, forming a Shadow Ball as if to say: Losers, get lost. The three exchanged glances and reluctantly left.

Rio followed the level 52 Gengar deeper into the cave with Old Ghost. After about ten minutes, they reached a larger chamber. Floating at its center was a Mega Stone—golden yellow, radiating an invisible energy.

Rio frowned. He remembered Gengar’s Mega Stone being pitch black. Was golden yellow correct?

"Old Ghost, do you feel anything from this Mega Stone?" Rio asked. Old Ghost shook its head.

"Gengar~" The accompanying Gengar called out.

"It says they’ve been guarding an Alakazam Mega Stone." Gengar translated.

Rio’s expression immediately turned to one of disbelief.
