Chapter 438 - 436: Who Is This So-called God?

A person could be completely dead, yet bringing them back to this village would resurrect them on the spot.

’Am I in a video game or something?’

Celeste Grant felt this completely shattered her understanding of ordinary people.

She recalled her thoughts from before her ascension; once she reached The Upper Realm, Golden Core cultivators would be a dime a dozen, and Divinity Transformation masters would be everywhere.

As it turned out, things were a little different from what she had imagined.

"Where in the world did I end up?"

She stood under an ancient tree in the village.

Celeste Grant lifted her gaze slightly, looking at the sky before her.

As far as she could see, fluffy white clouds drifted across an azure sky. The sun was at its zenith, bathing the entire village in warm sunlight.

The tree was massive, its branches lush and full of life. Not far from where she stood was an altar and a stone pedestal carved with ancient runes.

This village, Kheris, was shrouded in a mysterious power. Here, she couldn’t use Magic or even channel her Cultivation. She couldn’t even succeed at Flying in the sky; it was as if her Cultivation was suppressed just by being here.

Standing under the tree, Celeste Grant held out her hand. A stream of water materialized in her palm, only to vanish in the blink of an eye.

Celeste Grant was speechless.

She wiggled her fingers, the corner of her mouth twitching in irritation.

"Still not working."

She looked down at her swollen belly, gently stroking it through her clothes. She could feel the baby moving beneath her hand; her child was very healthy.

By her calculations, she was due to give birth in about a month, and she still hadn’t seen the baby’s father. She couldn’t help but sigh at the thought.

Gently stroking her belly, she murmured, "Little one, when will we ever get to see your father?"

Her gaze fell on the stone pedestal nearby, and she walked over. She sat for a moment on a long stone slab beside it. Feeling it was putting pressure on the baby, she stood up and paced around out of boredom before finally climbing atop the large pedestal.

After standing for a moment, she decided to try flying away. She leaped directly off the pedestal, landing as light as a feather. Thanks to her high level of Cultivation, the jump had no effect on her whatsoever.

Celeste Grant acted as if nothing was wrong, but Madam Forrest, who was just leaving her house nearby, was given a fright. She shouted from a distance, "Claire, honey, don’t move! Good heavens, what kind of mother are you? Climbing up so high and jumping down!"

While she spoke, the stout woman hurried to Celeste Grant’s side. She took Celeste’s arm to steady her, chattering worriedly, "Jumping down from that height! You could have disturbed the baby! If it were serious, you could have hurt yourself and sent the child into premature labor."

Celeste Grant knew her own body well.

She was a Cultivator. Forget climbing a small stone pedestal; even pregnant, she could lift thousands of pounds. But seeing Madam Forrest’s worried expression, she just smiled. "Haha, I’m fine, really. I know my limits, Madam Forrest. Nothing bad will happen."

This was the same Madam Forrest who had found her and brought her back half a month ago.

’I must have ascended to The Upper Realm the wrong way,’ Celeste Grant thought.

Her ascension from The Cultivation World had been a grand affair. Representatives from both The Immortal and Demonic Paths had gathered to see her off. A heavenly phenomenon had occurred: twelve red flowers bloomed in sequence, creating an auspicious image of purple energy flowing from the east. And then... after ascending to The Upper Realm, she found herself in a ditch on the edge of a mountain range. It was completely desolate, not a soul in sight. This was nothing like the grand arrival she had imagined.

The feeling was like feasting on the finest delicacies, only to wake up and find you were a beggar. One moment, you’re an Emperor ruling over a vast domain; the next, you’re a farmer toiling in the dirt, your back to the soil and your face to the sky. Don’t even ask. The feeling was... complicated.

Celeste Grant speculated.

She was likely in some remote, isolated corner of the Immortal Domain. The people here knew nothing of the outside world; they had lived in this village for generations and had never left. That would explain why none of them had ever practiced Cultivation.

The villagers of Kheris aged and died naturally. However, anyone who died an unnatural death—whether from illness, injury, or accident—would be resurrected on the spot as long as their body was brought back to the village. They weren’t immortal, but they could come back from the dead.

Hearing Celeste Grant’s reassurances, Madam Forrest continued to advise her earnestly. "How can you say it’s fine? You must be careful when you’re pregnant! If something happened, you’d regret it forever. Oh, look at me... I haven’t explained it properly."

She rubbed her head as she spoke, then explained to Celeste Grant, "You’ve seen for yourself that our village is blessed by a God. Any villager who dies from an accident can be brought back to life if they’re returned here. But unborn children don’t receive that blessing. A child born in this village has to be a year old before they are protected by the God like the rest of us."

Celeste Grant was taken aback. She hadn’t expected the village’s mysterious power to have such limitations. She nodded slowly. "I see." ’So, if a pregnant woman in the village failed to carry her baby to term, or if the child didn’t live to see its first birthday, it wouldn’t have the power of resurrection. A death before then would be permanent.’

Curious, she couldn’t help but ask, "Madam Forrest, I’m an outsider, not one of your villagers. Am I also blessed by the God here?"

The question seemed to stump her. Hearing Celeste’s question, Madam Forrest rubbed her head. "Eh? I really don’t know about that," she said.

A look of dawning realization crossed Madam Forrest’s face. She slapped her forehead. "That’s right! You’re not from our village, so I have no idea if you’re protected by the God. We’ve never had a case like this before. Our people have lived here in isolation for generations; we don’t know anything about the outside world."

Celeste Grant asked, "Have outsiders ever come to the village before?"

"Oh, yes!" Madam Forrest said. "It happened when I was just a little girl. Two people stumbled upon this place by accident. I remember it clearly, a man and a woman. My father kindly warned them it was dangerous to leave and even invited them to stay here. But they claimed to be some kind-of Cultivators, calling us ’lowly mortals’ with every other breath and being incredibly rude to my father. Pah! A couple of real nasty pieces of work. My father just tried to reason with them a little more, and they tried to attack him. In the end, my father and the other villagers gave them a good beating and threw them out of the village."
