The high-tier elites dropped from the ceiling in a coordinated ambush.

Amon killed the first three before their feet touched the ground. The remaining two managed to force him into a brief exchange of blows that cracked the tunnel walls. Azrael answered each strike with a cut that removed the attacking limb and continued into the core. The elites died still trying to complete movements that no longer had meaning.

Silence returned to the junction for less than a breath.

Then the deeper network responded.

The connected entities began sacrificing entire side colonies in waves meant to exhaust him through pure volume. They failed. Amon moved through each wave with the same measured pace. He did not waste motion. He did not chase fleeing crawlers that no longer threatened the path. He simply removed everything that stood between him and the central chambers.

The first connected core waited in a wide chamber supported by fused bone pillars. The entity was a mass of multiple crawlers that had grown together over years until they shared a single oversized core. When Amon entered the chamber the mass tried to crush him under waves of living flesh and armored plates.

He cut the core out of the center of the mass and watched the entire structure collapse in on itself. Secondary limbs continued to twitch for several seconds after the controlling will vanished. Then they too went still.

Amon continued deeper.

The second and third cores fell in similar fashion. Each one required a slightly greater application of force. Each one fed the ongoing refinement. By the time he reached the final chamber of the complex his body had moved past another threshold. Speed and power that had been exceptional an hour earlier now felt like the natural state of his existence.

The last entity of the network was the oldest. Parts of it had fused with the tunnel walls until it was difficult to tell where the creature ended and the stone began. Multiple secondary cores glowed along its length. When it sensed Amonโ€™s approach it attempted to collapse the entire section of tunnel on top of him.

Amon drove Azrael through the primary core before the ceiling finished falling.

The collapse continued around him and then stopped when the controlling presence disappeared. Dust and broken stone settled across the ruined chamber. Black blood seeped from the ruptured cores and pooled in the cracks.

Amon stood in the center of the destruction and felt the last echoes of the network fade into nothing.

The second dens complex was finished.

He turned and began the climb back toward the surface.

Outside the night was deep and absolute. The corrupted lands around the dens no longer contained any living Night Crawlers within the range of his senses. The silence was complete.

Amon adjusted his grip on Azrael and continued walking west.

There were greater concentrations still ahead.

There were older things that had never needed to approach the capital walls.

The Silent Night continued to expand.

The long-range arrays detected the second dens complex going silent just after midnight.

Elder Voss stood in the central monitoring chamber of the palace and watched the residual energy readings collapse into the same clean signature that had marked every previous site. The western edge of the detection field showed a continuous path of absence moving further into the unmarked territories.

He sent the report to the King without delay.

The King received it in private. Only the Royal Guard commander and the highest ranking formation master remained in the chamber. The map on the table had been updated with every confirmed silent zone. The black marks now stretched in a clear line from the capitalโ€™s eastern wall deep into the corrupted lands.

"It is not slowing," the formation master said. "If anything the intervals between dens are decreasing. Whatever this is has grown more efficient with every engagement."

The Royal Guard commander studied the map in silence for a long moment.

"We should consider the possibility that it will not stop at the outer dens," he said. "If the pattern continues it will eventually reach the deeper concentrations that even our oldest records only mention in fragments. Those populations are larger. Older. More dangerous. If something can erase them the same way it erased the outer forces then the balance of the entire region changes."

The King looked at the western edge of the map where the marks stopped because the arrays could no longer reach.

"Prepare a second scouting force," he said. "Smaller. Faster. Their only task is to confirm the state of the next dens and return with whatever information they can gather. They are not to engage anything they find."

He paused.

"And begin quiet preparations for a possible full evacuation of the outer districts. I do not want panic. I want options."

Both men bowed and left to carry out the orders.

In the eastern districts the fear had already taken root. People gathered in small groups near the barrier light and spoke in low voices about the empty plains and the missing Night Crawler cries. Soldiers on the walls answered questions with silence or short official statements that satisfied no one. Children were kept indoors after dark. Merchants closed their stalls early. The usual night traffic of the capital thinned until the streets felt abandoned.

Captain Roland remained at his post through the entire night. He watched the corpse field under the moon and waited for the first sign of movement that never came. The absence of the usual distant screeches felt louder than any assault he had ever faced.

He thought about the path of destruction that continued west without interruption. He thought about the clean cuts and the crushed cores and the complete lack of human remains among tens of thousands of dead crawlers.

Something had walked past the capital while the city slept.

Something that did not need an army.

Something that left only silence behind it.

Roland rested both hands on the cold stone of the wall and stared into the dark.

Far beyond the reach of the barrier light that same silence continued to spread.
