Chapter 470: Thus the Corruption begun
The evening air was cool and sweet, carrying the scent of roasted nuts and spun sugar from the circus grounds. Nero and Khione walked slowly through the lingering crowd, their hands still clasped, their steps unhurried. The main show was over, but the night was still young, and the circus grounds were alive with smaller attractions—games, food stalls, performers entertaining small groups.
Nero’s phone buzzed. He pulled it out and glanced at the screen. A message from Lux.
Something came up. Can’t make it tonight. Rain check?
He showed the message to Khione. She read it, then looked up at him, a faint smile on her lips.
"Just us, then," she said.
"Just us," he agreed.
He pocketed the phone, and they continued walking. The crowd thinned as they moved away from the main attractions, toward the quieter edges of the grounds. A small tent stood apart from the others, its canvas a deep, rich purple, its entrance draped with velvet curtains. A sign above the door read "Madame Zara’s Mystical Emporium."
Nero raised an eyebrow. "Mystical Emporium?"
Khione’s smile widened. "Let’s see."
They pushed aside the velvet curtains and stepped inside. The interior was dim, lit by dozens of candles in glass holders. Shelves lined the walls, filled with jars and bottles and strange objects. A woman sat behind a small table, her face lined with age, her eyes bright and knowing. She wore a flowing robe of deep purple, and a crystal ball sat on the table before her.
"Welcome," she said, her voice a soft, melodic murmur. "Come in, come in. I’ve been expecting you."
Nero and Khione exchanged a glance. The woman smiled, her eyes twinkling.
"Not literally," she added. "But I always say that. It adds to the atmosphere."
They sat across from her, the crystal ball between them. The woman studied them for a moment, her gaze moving from Nero to Khione and back again.
"You are not ordinary," she said. "Both of you. I can feel it. Power radiates from you like heat from a fire."
Nero did not answer. Khione’s expression remained neutral.
The woman leaned forward. "Would you like me to read your future?"
Khione hesitated. Then she nodded.
The woman closed her eyes, her hands hovering over the crystal ball. The room grew still. The candle flames flickered, casting dancing shadows on the walls.
"I see..." the woman murmured. "I see a storm. Dark clouds gathering. Thunder and lightning. A great battle, not yet fought." She opened her eyes and looked at Nero. "You are at the center of it. The eye of the storm."
Nero’s jaw tightened. "What else?"
The woman turned to Khione. "I see ice. A frozen wasteland, vast and empty. But there is warmth at the center of it. A fire that will not die." She paused. "You are not alone. You will never be alone."
The candle flames steadied. The woman leaned back, her expression thoughtful.
"That is all I can see," she said. "The future is not fixed. It changes with every choice you make."
They left the tent in silence. The night air felt different now, charged with the weight of the woman’s words. Nero looked at Khione. She looked at him.
"A storm," he said.
"A frozen wasteland," she replied.
They walked on, their hands still clasped. The circus lights twinkled around them, but the magic of the evening had shifted.
A little farther on, they found a small cart selling hot chocolate. Nero bought two cups, and they sat on a nearby bench, sipping the warm, sweet drink. The steam rose in soft curls, mingling with the cool night air.
’’Did you believe in whatever she said?"
Facing his girlfriend’s question he stayed silent before answering.
’’Well, not sure but better stay cautious. Something is coming that’s for sure.’’
He leaned in and kissed her forehead. "I will always be here and I hope you will do the same.’’
’’Of course, you’re my everything.’’
They finished their hot chocolate and walked toward the exit. The circus grounds were beginning to empty, the performers packing up their tents, the crowd thinning. The night was quiet, the stars bright above.
As they passed through the gates, Khione paused. She looked back at the circus, at the colorful tents and flags, the fading lights.
"I’m glad we came," she said.
Nero squeezed her hand. "Me too."
They walked back toward the academy, their steps slow, their hearts full. The evening had been unexpected, a gift of time and wonder. And they would carry it with them, a small light in the darkness.
Meanwhile, in another location, in the depths of the dungeon, the scene was very different. Barak Raizen knelt in the center of a vast chamber, his body trembling, his breath coming in ragged gasps. The demon’s voice had faded, but its presence lingered, a warm, seductive weight in his chest.
The demon seed had nestled within his heart, a small, dark kernel of power. He could feel it pulsing, growing, sending tendrils of energy through his veins. His body had undergone a subtle change—his muscles felt denser, his reflexes sharper, his senses more acute. His reserves of prana had increased, and a new energy crackled at the edges of his awareness.
Black lightning. It was different from the golden lightning he had wielded before. Darker. More volatile. It crackled around his hands, a tangible expression of his newfound power.
Barak rose to his feet, his golden eyes gleaming with a maddening light. The dungeon stretched before him, dark and endless, filled with monsters that had been created to test him. But he was no longer just a cadet on a mission. He was something more.
He wanted more.
He needed more.
With a roar of fury, he charged into the darkness. The monsters came at him from all sides—blue orcs, twisted by the demon’s influence, their eyes burning with hate. Barak met them head-on. His sword blazed with black lightning, cutting through their ranks like a scythe through wheat.
He imagined each monster was Nero. The hated face. The despised eyes. The voice that haunted his thoughts. He struck with savage precision, each blow fueled by years of resentment and jealousy. The monsters fell before him, their bodies dissolving into wisps of dark energy that flowed into him, increasing his power.
"Die!" he screamed. "Die, die, die!"
The dungeon echoed with his fury. The monsters kept coming, but Barak did not tire. The demon seed within him pulsed with each kill, feeding on his rage, growing stronger. His reserves of prana swelled. His potential expanded.
