Chapter 451: Ambush 2
The frozen arena shimmered with a cold, pale light. Khione stood at its center, her wand raised, her expression as still as the ice around her. Three demonized mages faced her, their forms twisted into monstrous shapes—a scarab with chitinous armor, a mantis with blades for arms, a lizard whose scales gleamed with heat. They were Adept-level, their power crude but potent. They had been sent to kill her. They would fail.
Khione did not wait for them to attack. She raised her wand, and ice erupted from the ground, a forest of jagged spears that shot toward the scarab. The creature raised its arms, chitinous plates forming a shield, but the spears pierced through, forcing it back. The mantis lunged, its scything blades aimed at her throat. She sidestepped, her movement fluid, unhurried, and a wall of ice rose between them. The blades struck the wall and skidded off, leaving deep gouges.
The lizard opened its mouth, and a jet of flame roared toward her. Khione raised her hand, and a shield of frost formed before her, absorbing the fire, turning it to steam. She stepped through the steam, her wand tracing a circle, and a wave of frost rolled from her, sweeping across the ground, freezing everything in its path.
The scarab was the first to break. It charged, its armored body a battering ram. Khione met it head-on. She raised her wand, and a spear of ice, thicker than a man’s arm, shot forward, piercing the scarab’s chest. The creature stumbled, its chitin cracking, dark blood spilling. Khione did not pause. She extended her free hand, and the temperature around the scarab plummeted. Its body froze, cracked, shattered into a thousand fragments.
One down.
The mantis circled, its blades glinting in the dim light. It was faster than the scarab, more agile. It struck from the left, then the right, its blades a blur of motion. Khione parried with her wand, ice forming along its length, meeting the blades in a shower of sparks. She was calm, her movements measured. She did not waste energy.
She found an opening. The mantis overextended, its right blade swinging wide. Khione stepped inside its guard, her wand touching its chest. Ice spread from the point of contact, covering its body, its blades, its eyes. It froze, a statue of pale blue, and then it shattered.
Two down.
The lizard was the most dangerous. Its scales shimmered with heat, melting the ice around it. It opened its mouth, and a torrent of fire erupted, filling the frozen arena with molten fury. Khione raised her wand, and a dome of ice formed around her, absorbing the flames. Steam billowed, obscuring her vision.
She had had enough. She expanded her domain.
"Frozen World."
The sphere of absolute cold expanded from her body, encompassing the lizard, the arena, the rocky ground. Within that sphere, the temperature plummeted. The lizard’s flames died. Its scales grew brittle. Its movements slowed. Khione walked through the frozen air, her wand trailing frost, and touched the lizard’s chest. Ice spread from the point of contact, covering its body, its heart, its brain. It froze, a statue of black and white, and then it collapsed.
The frozen arena fell silent. Khione stood among the shattered remains of her enemies, her chest heaving, her wand trembling in her grip. The fight was over. She had won. But the cost was high. Her cores were nearly empty. Her body was drained of prana. The battle had pushed her to her limits.
She swayed on her feet. The world tilted. She felt herself falling—
And then strong arms caught her.
Khione looked up. Nero was there, his face etched with concern, his arms wrapped around her. He had come. He had always come.
"I’ve got you," he said.
She nodded, too tired to speak. He lifted her easily, cradling her against his chest, and carried her away from the frozen battlefield. The night was dark, the stars cold. But his warmth surrounded her, steady and sure.
"Rest," he said. "I’ll take care of you."
Khione closed her eyes. She was exhausted, drained, but she was safe. She was in his arms. And that was enough.

The night air was cool against his skin as Nero lifted into the sky, his flame wings spreading wide, catching the wind. Below, the frozen battlefield faded into darkness, the shattered remains of the demonized mages already dissolving into the earth. Khione lay in his arms, her breathing slow and shallow, her body limp with exhaustion. She had pushed herself to her limits, and now she needed rest.
He flew low, skimming over the rocky terrain, his flames casting a warm glow on the ground below. The city lights appeared on the horizon, small and distant at first, then growing larger as he approached. He descended through the streets, his wings folding, and landed softly before the hotel they had booked earlier.
The lobby was empty at this hour. The attendant, a young woman with tired eyes, barely glanced up as Nero carried Khione past the desk. He had already paid for the room. He did not need to explain.
Their room was on the third floor, a simple space with a large bed, a small table, and a bathroom with a claw-foot tub. He laid Khione on the bed, her white hair spread across the pillow, her face pale but peaceful. Her robes were torn, stained with dirt and the remnants of the battle. She needed to be cleaned.
He carried her to the bathroom and turned on the tap. The water was warm, steam rising in soft curls. He undressed her gently, his movements careful, respectful. Her skin was cool to the touch, but he could feel the faint pulse of her core, still recovering. He lowered her into the water, supporting her head, letting the warmth soak into her tired muscles.
Her eyes fluttered open. She looked at him, her gaze unfocused but warm.
"You didn’t have to," she whispered.
He shook his head. "I wanted to."
She closed her eyes and let the water hold her. He washed her hair, his fingers gentle, working through the tangles. The dirt and sweat of the battle washed away, leaving her skin clean and pale. He took his time, not rushing, letting her rest in the warmth.
When he was done, he wrapped her in a soft towel and carried her back to the bed. He dressed her in a clean shirt, loose and comfortable, and pulled the covers over her. She was already half-asleep, her breathing slow and even.
He sat beside her for a moment, watching her sleep. The tension had left her face. Her brows were smooth, her lips parted slightly. She looked younger, softer, vulnerable. He reached out and brushed a strand of hair from her cheek, then rose and moved to the small table.
He sat cross-legged and closed his eyes. Meditation came easily, his breathing slow and deep. He cycled what little prana remained in his cores, drawing in the ambient energy from the room, from the air, from the earth below. The fight had drained him, but he would recover. He always did.
After an hour, he rose and lay down beside her. His arms wrapped around her, pulling her close. She stirred, murmuring something soft, and nestled into his chest. Her warmth seeped into him, steady and reassuring.
The night was quiet. The city outside slept. The stars watched through the window.
He closed his eyes and let himself drift. The dreams that came were calm, formless, filled with the gentle rhythm of her heartbeat against his own.
Khione’s brows smoothed completely, her breathing deepening. She slept soundlessly, her body finally at rest. So did he.
