Primordial Slime: I Devour The World

Chapter 37: The Settlement Changes

Sponsored

Morning in the settlement no longer began with silence.

It awakened.

Hammers rang from the goblin workshops.

Young wolves raced along the patrol routes before the adults could stop them.

Rabbits hurried between herb gardens carrying woven baskets almost larger than themselves.

Slimes bounced through the streets, delivering water, stones, and fresh mushrooms to wherever they were needed.

Tanaka stood atop the watchtower overlooking everything.

A watchtower.

He smiled.

A year and half ago, they had lived inside a damp cave.

Now they had roads.

Not proper roads yet, but packed earth pathways lined with smooth stones gathered by the slimes and moss turtles. They connected every important part of the settlement, from the Dungeon Core to the rabbit gardens, the goblin workshops, and the wolf barracks near the outer border.

"It doesn’t even feel like a little settlement anymore..."

The little slime bounced beside him.

Boing!

"I know."

He looked farther into the distance.

"We’ve outgrown it."

Later that morning, Tanaka gathered the settlement beneath the Crystal Tree.

Everyone arrived.

Slimes.

Wolves.

Rabbits.

Goblins.

The recently accepted goblin refugees.

Even the moss turtles slowly lumbered into the clearing, earning amused looks as everyone patiently waited for them.

The air smelled different today. The rabbits had brought sprigs of mint and lavender and tucked them into the roots of the Crystal Tree. The goblins had strung thin cords of dyed fiber between the lower branches. The wolves had polished the old training stones until they gleamed. It wasn’t planned. It just... happened. People wanted this moment to look like something.

Tanaka opened the Thought Communication network.

"We’ve survived."

Pride flowed through every connected mind. He felt it from the youngest rabbit kit to the oldest goblin elder.

"We’ve protected one another."

The emotions grew warmer. A few wolves let out soft chuffs. A group of slimes pulsed brighter.

"But surviving isn’t enough anymore."

Confused thoughts spread through the network.

Tanaka continued.

"Look around."

Everyone did.

Children chased one another through the clearing, a rabbit kit riding on a young wolf’s back while two slimes tried to keep up and rolled into each other.

Goblins worked beside rabbits without hesitation, trading a newly carved wooden rake for a bundle of dried herbs.

Slimes helped carry timber far larger than themselves, wobbling but determined.

Wolves returned from patrol and were greeted instead of feared, noses bumped against waiting friends.

"This isn’t only a settlement anymore."

He paused, letting the network quiet so they could hear him properly.

"It’s becoming something more."

Excitement rippled through the network. Because Tanaka believed they could become something greater. And if he believed it, they did too.

Construction began that very afternoon.

The settlement expanded outward rather than upward.

The slimes were the first to help. Using their flexible bodies, they transported heavy stones that would have required several goblins to carry. Some of them discovered they liked it. Three slimes in particular began calling themselves the "Stone Crew" and took to flattening clay for new foundations, giggling every time their bodies made a perfect _splat_.

The wolves dragged entire fallen trees from deeper within the forest, working in pairs and calling out to each other in short barks that echoed.

The rabbits measured space carefully before planting boundary markers so farmland would continue expanding instead of shrinking. They argued, politely, about whether the berry bushes should go north or south of the new road. They compromised and planted both.

The goblins directed everything, but not like bosses. They moved between groups with charcoal sticks and scraps of bark, sketching, adjusting, asking, "Will this work for you?"

Tanaka watched with quiet satisfaction.

Nobody needed constant orders anymore.

Every race had naturally found its role.

It was... beautiful.

Over the following weeks, new districts slowly emerged.

The goblins expanded their workshops into a proper Craft Quarter where blacksmithing, woodworking, leatherworking, and stone carving took place side by side. The smell of hot iron and sawdust became permanent. At night, lanterns stayed lit late because someone always had "one more thing to finish."

The rabbits enlarged their herb fields until the fragrance of medicinal plants drifted across half the settlement. Small storage buildings soon followed, packed with dried herbs, mushrooms, berries, and preserved food. They even started a little trading table at the crossroads. Nothing formal. Just: "We have extra thyme. Anyone need it?"

The wolves established a permanent barracks near the eastern entrance, complete with elevated lookout platforms overlooking the forest. The younger wolves turned one platform into a race course and promptly got scolded for it.

Even the slimes changed.

Instead of living together around the Dungeon Core, many began maintaining different parts of the settlement.

Some remained near the Core as guardians.

Others cleaned roads.

Some transported supplies.

A few became builders, discovering that their gelatinous bodies made smoothing stone and clay remarkably easy.

And one small slime, the one that always followed Tanaka, started delivering messages. It would bounce from the Craft Quarter to the herb fields to the barracks and back, always with an important _boing_ like it was announcing news.

Without anyone noticing...

The village had begun developing professions.

Tanaka spent most of his days walking through the settlement in his human form.

He greeted everyone.

Watched their work.

Answered questions.

Sometimes he helped lift timber.

Other times he simply listened.

He sat with rabbit elders while they sorted seeds. He tried, badly, to hammer a nail with the goblins and earned good-natured laughter. He ran one lap with the young wolves and decided he was too old for that.

The more he observed, the more he realized something unexpected.

They no longer looked at him with simple admiration.

They looked at him with trust.

That realization carried far more weight.

One afternoon, the elderly refugee goblin approached him near the new storage sheds.

Through the telepathic network, his thoughts carried both gratitude and hesitation.

"Great One..."

"May I ask something?"

"Of course."

"Why did you save us?"

Tanaka blinked.

The question caught him off guard.

The goblin continued.

"Most powerful monsters conquer."

"Humans take."

"Strong tribes rule over weaker ones."

"Yet you... welcomed strangers."

Tanaka thought carefully before answering. He remembered the cold of the cave. The first time a slime had shared food with him. The way no one asked what he was before offering him a place.

Finally, he smiled.

"Because someone once welcomed me."

His gaze drifted toward the little slime happily bouncing after a group of children, trying to teach them how to roll in a straight line.

"When I arrived here..."

"I was just another nameless slime."

"No stronger than anyone else."

"They accepted me before I had done anything to deserve it."

The elder followed his gaze.

Understanding slowly dawned.

"So you’re repaying that kindness."

Tanaka nodded.

"And hoping it continues long after I’m gone."

The old goblin was quiet for a long time. Then he bowed his head. "Then we will help you carry it."

Night settled over the growing town.

Lights glowed from carved crystal lanterns around the central square. Someone had started calling it the Gathering Square, and the name stuck.

The Craft Quarter remained busy despite the late hour. Hammers rang slower now, more careful.

Young wolves practiced with older warriors, their shadows long in the lantern light.

Rabbits shared meals with goblins, swapping stories about the first winter.

Slimes bounced happily between every district, carrying messages through Tanaka’s mental network, and occasionally stopping just to watch the stars.

Standing atop the watchtower once more, Tanaka looked down at the settlement.

No.

Not a settlement anymore.

A village.

He closed his eyes and reached out with Thought Communication.

Hundreds of familiar minds answered instantly.

"We’ve built a home..."

His voice disappeared into the cool night air.

"But every home needs a future."
