Chapter 415: To Be Incredibly Tasty
"Can you stop moving so much!" Sena screamed at Aether as she wrapped the bandages around his wound.
"Well, maybe if you were more careful, I wouldn’t have to. This part of me isn’t supposed to be exposed to the outside world, so of course it’s going to be really sensitive; have a heart."
She rolled her eyes, finishing the bandaging. "I have a heart, dumbass; if I didn’t, I would have let you die."
Aether got to his feet, which were a bit weak, exhausted from the fight. But they managed to keep him up; Sena followed, grabbing Aether’s arm and wrapping it around her neck for support.
"Let’s just go back; I’ll take care of the Village."
But Aether didn’t move.
...
"There’s something I still want to do, here." He pointed back to the church. Sena understood what he was saying, but she didn’t understand the meaning behind it. Was he scared that another Guardian would be born from the egg? If so, she could go and break it; he didn’t have to, or just use some of their remaining men to do it.
But looking at him... he seemed determined to be the one going.
"Fine, let’s go."
She said, helping him get back inside the church and to the lectern where the egg rested.
Aether smiled, looking at it. ’So this is the thing it wanted to protect? Can’t really hate a mother protecting her baby, can you.’ His hand raised, slowly moving to the egg, and once he made contact with its shell, he heard something he had not expected.
[You have gained a relic]
And then the egg disappeared.
"What just happened?" Sena said, her eyes wide from shock.
...

’So... a relic also being an entity is possible... but how does that work? How does a living being just live in my core? And could humanity just replicate this? It’s the first time he has heard the Codex has done something like this; it probably isn’t, someone else had probably found something like this and told the smiths the idea. How else would they have come up with it?
That is, if this was even how they wished to do it; after all, he was only guessing they wanted to make a relic that was also an entity.
’It doesn’t seem to say when it is going to break out, so I will have to wait.’
Rolling his eyes, he turned to Sena. "It was a relic; that’s why it disappeared, but it isn’t anything worth speaking of. It’s useless, so let’s just go."
If he hadn’t said anything about it, Sena would have instantly called his crap out, and if he had only said that it had been a relic, she would have questioned it. That had been why he had both said it was a relic and that it wasn’t worth asking about.
"Are you sure?" She asked, tilting her head.
’How stubborn can you be?’ Aether sighed. "Yes, I’m very sure. Now let’s go."
Sena looked at him, staring into his eyes, examining him, trying to figure out if he was lying or not. But in the end, she didn’t seem to care that much if he was or not. It was just an egg either way.
What powers could an egg even have? To be incredibly tasty?
...
...
...
Aether rested in his bed, alone. Sena had left with their remaining men to take care of everyone in the village; it wasn’t worth it for him to consume himself even more. It wasn’t like Sena wasn’t capable; she could use a blade, her family even had a sword style, she just didn’t like it. Preferring to have others do it for her. What he wanted to say was that he wasn’t scared she might die; she won’t. At least not to anything outside the Guardians, or something or someone they aren’t supposed to fight in the main story.
Lifting up his bandages, Aether looked at his wound, which had started to heal faster because of his pin. Night had come, but it was probably not going to be the only night they were going to spend in this Inn, since he didn’t think his wound was going to heal, and if the next fights continued to be this hard, he was going to need to be fully recovered.
And this was probably going to continue, with him staying more than one night to recover, as much as he didn’t like it.
’At least they were only three more, and the Voice.’
They didn’t have to kill the Voice, but at the same time, he wanted to. One thing about changing the ending of a book is that the Codex watches; it knew what you wanted to do. That way, if you did something that would allow you to get out, but still wanted to do more, it allowed you.
But it did make scary moments, where you get close to the ending, and you still aren’t out, and the Codex takes you out at the last moment.
If, after slightly changing the story, your intentions are to leave, the Codex will take you out. But in this case, it was good, because he knew that normally they would probably be taken out after the twelve Guardians; even if, in the original story, they also killed all the Guardians, he doubted they also killed the villages, and that was enough to change the ending.
’Three more and the Voice... can’t wait... the last two battles will be the hardest but most important; one will unleash the voice, and the other will take us out.’
...
They were close, but it was still going to take some time.
