Chapter 1554 - 1401: Fake Commandery Princess 11
Apparently, everyone’s luck wasn’t great; this temple had been in disrepair for far too long and looked eerie. The courtyard’s blue bricks were gone, overgrown with weeds taller than people.
Although the temple was quite large and could accommodate everyone, most of the roof tiles had fallen off, and the rooms were covered in dust and rubble from broken tiles and stones.
Ye Shuangshuang could only comfort herself that despite the drafts overhead, at least there were walls on all sides to block the wind. Setting up tents inside the main hall was definitely better than staying outside.
Upon entering, Ye Shuangshuang looked around and found it wasn’t as bad as it seemed from outside. Although most of the tiles above were broken, the beams and pillars remained, appearing relatively sturdy.
Ye Shuangshuang went out to gather some soft and long weeds, then effortlessly jumped onto the high roof of the main hall, spreading the weeds and branches over the roof.
Modeling after thatched roof buildings, Ye Shuangshuang made several trips back and forth, finally covering most of the roof.
This way, if it rained outside, inside it would only drizzle at most, not soaking like being out in the rain without any cover.
The way Ye Shuangshuang busied herself back and forth caught the eye of the government officers, who were amazed as she leapt straight from the ground to the roof! The temple’s main hall was much higher than an ordinary commoner’s house.
Even monkeys might not be able to jump this high! At this moment, these officers, including the stunned Ye Family members, truly realized that Ye Shuangshuang’s martial training from a young age wasn’t just fancy moves but real skills!
After fixing the roof, Ye Shuangshuang rolled up her sleeves and began cleaning the decrepit temple’s main hall, clearing out the broken stones and tiles scattered across the floor. She found a spot with some roof coverage to set up the tent.
As it looked like rain outside, everyone set up camp earlier than usual. With the officers’ help, since they needed tents as well, everyone worked together, finishing just as night fell.
Ye Shuangshuang quickly started cooking. Today, her luck was good, catching two wild rabbits and five pheasants. The pheasants would be used for soup, perfect for soaking bread.
The rabbits were chopped up by Ye Shuangshuang and made into a spicy stir-fried dish; the pot and seasonings were bought by the officers.
Though they didn’t explicitly say the pot and seasonings were for Ye Shuangshuang, she understood and claimed them for cooking. From then on, everyone enjoyed stir-fried dishes with their meals.
This spicy stir-fried rabbit was well-loved by everyone, with those having good teeth roasting the bread over the fire and enjoying it with the rabbit pieces, feeling utterly satisfied.
Even the Ye Family, who were accustomed to delicacies, adored the spicy stir-fried rabbit. Ye Jingfei, with an oily mouth, looked at Ye Shuangshuang with sparkling eyes: "Sister, this is so delicious, even better than the meat at home, spicy and fragrant."
Ye Shuangshuang smiled, patted Ye Jingfei’s head, and gave him two more pieces of rabbit: "Eat more if you like it. If it’s not enough, I’ll catch two more wild rabbits tomorrow."
Recently, there were quite a few wild rabbits along the path, not hard to find. Ye Shuangshuang easily caught two today with just a glance.
While everyone loved the rabbit meat, ironically, Ye Shuangshuang, among all, found it least pleasing, as the spicy flavor used for the dish wasn’t the aromatic, hot chili pepper.
People of this era usually used spices like scallions, ginger, garlic, mustard, and cornel for heat, with cornel being somewhat like chili.
However, cornel has a bitter taste, and its spicy sensation differs from chili. Ye Shuangshuang didn’t like cornel at all.
At night, Ye Shuangshuang arranged the carriage for Ye Feiying and the Shen Family to sleep in, not because it was more comfortable, but it was warmer than the tent.
It started raining outside with a cold wind, significantly dropping the temperature. Although it was somewhat hot during the day, it felt very cold now. Ye Shuangshuang worried Ye Feiying and the Shen Family might catch a chill in the tent.
To avoid the cold, Ye Shuangshuang fetched all the blankets. Surprisingly, she spent the night anxiously worrying about Ye Feiying, the Shen Family, and even Bai Menghan, yet they were all fine.
In contrast, among the strong and healthy officers, three suddenly developed high fevers in the middle of the night.
This remote place had neither village nor clinic nearby, and no doctor could be found. As a last resort, the leading officer rushed to wake Ye Shuangshuang.
Fortunately, along the way, Ye Shuangshuang had been collecting herbs and brewing medicine for everyone’s physique, never causing any mishaps, proving her remedies, if not precise, weren’t harmful.
By the time Ye Shuangshuang arrived, the three officers were flushed with fever and muttering incoherently. Luckily, she had ample medicinal supplies prepared.
Gathering herbs, making medicine, and rousing people to drink it took most of the night, but eventually, they managed to break the fevers. This sudden high fever, with its persistent danger, was the most perilous.
Once the high fever subsided, they were mostly recovered. By dawn, the three young men, naturally robust, were almost back to normal.
In the morning, Ye Shuangshuang made meat porridge. The rice was contributed by the officers, not much but cooking it into soft, hot porridge warmed everyone, making them feel better.
It continued raining outside, colder now than the previous day, prompting everyone to add more layers. Ye Family members, feeling discomfort from the sudden cold, although not chilled, weren’t entirely well.
With three already affected by cold, Ye Shuangshuang brewed medicine for everyone as a precaution against contagion.
This time, even those who initially doubted Ye Shuangshuang’s medical skills asked for a bowl of medicine and drank it.
Her ability to cure those with high fevers convinced them of Ye Shuangshuang’s medical expertise.
Rain still pattered outside as officers decided to rest another day here. Postponing travel in the rain, with risks of catching a cold and scarce resting spots, was a safe choice.
Luckily, the rain finally stopped the next day, but the mountain path outside was extremely muddy, and waterlogged roads became soft, causing wheels to sink with every step.
After trying, they found traveling too difficult. The officers decided to turn back and wait another day or two until the road improved, given their rations could last a few days.
Another day passed; the sun came out, drying the ground, hard again for travel, and the group set out.
The most gratifying for Ye Shuangshuang was that Ye Feiying, the Shen Family, and Bai Menghan, in her care, had stayed healthy without a single illness.
