Chapter 782: Veilfang’s Reach
The dark took Lily the same quiet way it had taken the others, and when it let her see again, she stood in the same small grey room, five tiles glowing at chest height.
[Choose one deck to rebuild. This process cannot be reversed.]
Dreadlings. Dreadgate. Nightweave. Hollowcurse. Dread Sovereign.
She didn’t need long either. She’d felt the exact moment Hollowcurse cost her the fight, tendrils locked around Vantress’s arm, herself locked just as tightly in place beside him, and when his final strike came, she’d still been standing exactly where the curse had left her.
"Hollowcurse," she said quietly, and touched the tile.
[Hollowcurse: erased.]
The tile crumbled to grey dust, and Lily felt the small, strange absence of the first deck that had ever made her feel like a real threat instead of just a quiet shadow at the edge of a fight, gone now, deliberately, for the sake of something better.
"You served me well," she said to the settling dust. "You also nearly got me killed. Both things can be true."
[Choose a prefix.]
Hollow— / Grim— / Veil— / Hush— / Wraith—
She read each one carefully, thinking not about what the curse had been, but about what it had cost her. Hollowcurse had needed her close, needed her committed, needed her still exactly when stillness was the one thing she couldn’t afford.
She chose Veil—.
[Choose a suffix.]
—bane / —shroud / —fang / —whisper / —reap
Fang, she thought immediately. Something that bit and let go. Something that didn’t need to stay attached to hurt.
She chose —fang.
[Enter one word of your own.]
The blank space opened, and Lily thought of the one thing Hollowcurse had never given her, distance, the simple freedom to hurt something without needing to stand beside it while it hurt her back.
She wrote: Reach.
[Deck seed accepted: Veilfang + Reach]
[Entering first trial.]
The grey room dissolved into hanging fog, thick curtains of mist strung between shapes she could only half make out, a whole world built from things that wanted to stay hidden.
[Stage 1: The Veiled Hollow]
Mist-wraiths peeled away from the fog almost immediately, formless until they were close enough to matter, and Lily fought the first few the old way, whip lashing out in tight, controlled arcs that required her to close distance every single time.
It worked. It also, she noted grimly, put her exactly where Hollowcurse always used to put her, close enough to be caught.
[Boss: The Curtain Warden]
The Warden fought from inside its own fog entirely, striking and vanishing before she could ever properly close the gap, and for the first stretch of the fight she found herself chasing something that had no interest in being caught at all.
She stopped chasing, and started listening instead, the same old habit that had never once failed her, and found the Warden’s location not by sight but by the faint disturbance its movement left in air it couldn’t quite hide from her hearing.
Her whip found it from a distance that would have been impossible a week earlier, and the Warden came apart into ordinary, harmless mist.
[Stage cleared. Choose one card.]
Fangmark — Active. A ranged mark that drains steadily from a distance, no contact required to apply or maintain it.
Veiled Step — Utility. Move unseen for a short duration, breaking line of sight entirely.
Hollow Bite — Active. A single close-range drain, high potency, requiring contact.
She read all three, and didn’t hesitate over the last one at all.
"Fangmark," she said. "I already know exactly what close-range costs me."
[Card acquired: Fangmark]
The second trial opened onto flat, silent plains, grass that made no sound underfoot no matter how hard the wind pushed against it.
[Stage 2: The Hushfields]
Silent stalkers moved through the grass like held breath given shape, and Lily fought them with Fangmark already settled into her hands, draining strength from a distance long before any of them got close enough to threaten her at all.
[Boss: The Voiceless Reaper]
It didn’t strike so much as arrive, no warning, no sound, simply present where it hadn’t been a moment before, and the first exchange cost her a shallow line across her forearm before she adjusted to a fight that gave her no windup to read at all.
She answered by refusing to wait for one either, drain applied the instant she sensed it near rather than after confirming the danger properly, and the Reaper found itself losing strength to a mark it had never seen her place.
[Stage cleared. Choose one card.]
Reaching Thorn — Passive. Drain effects automatically extend their radius, catching anything that strays too close to an existing mark.
Silent Fang — Active. An instant drain that requires no sustained contact at all, applied and finished in the same breath.
Withering Veil — Defensive. A shroud that drains anything that touches it, punishing enemies who close distance on their own.
"Silent Fang," Lily said. "If Fangmark taught me distance, this one teaches me speed."
[Card acquired: Silent Fang]
A soft chime sounded as the plains began to fade.
[Mini-Challenge available: The Hushfields Vigil. Remain undetected by every stalker in the field for sixty seconds. Reward: mutate an acquired card.]
She passed it without much difficulty, patience never having been her weakness, and the reward settled into her hands a moment later.
[Trial complete. Choose a card to mutate.]
She chose Fangmark.
[Fangmark → Fangmark Absolute: Range extended significantly, and the drain no longer requires renewal, persisting until the marked target is defeated or the mark is removed.]
The third trial dropped her into a hall of standing mirrors, her own reflection multiplying in every direction until she genuinely lost track, for a moment, of which shape was actually hers.
[Stage 3: The Wraithglass Maze]
Mirror-wraiths peeled off the glass in her own exact shape, mimicking her whip, her stance, her every instinct, and for the first time all cave she found herself fighting something that already knew every trick she might reach for.
[Boss: The Reflected Self]
It fought exactly like her, which meant it fought exactly like the old her, closing distance, committing to contact, trusting proximity the way Hollowcurse always had.
Lily didn’t close the distance at all. She stood her ground and let Fangmark Absolute do the work from range, watching her own reflection grow steadily weaker while refusing to give it the one thing it was clearly built to punish.
"You’re not fighting the version of me that’s still here," she said, and ended it with a strike from a distance the reflection had no answer for.
[Stage cleared. Choose one card.]
Echo Bite — Active. A drain that repeats on its own, no need to reapply.
Grim Ward — Defensive. Punishes anything that closes distance on you, discouraging opponents from forcing melee at all.
Whispering Chain — Utility. Link multiple marked targets, spreading drain between them.
"Grim Ward," she said. "I want closing the distance on me to cost something now. It’s cost me enough already."
[Card acquired: Grim Ward]
The fourth trial opened onto a vast, hollow expanse, grey and empty in every direction, distance itself the only real feature of the whole place.
[Stage 4: The Hollow Reach]
Void-drifters approached from impossibly far away, and for the first time the cave let her fight an entire stage without a single enemy ever managing to close the gap she’d built between them.
[Boss: The Distant Hunger]
It hungered for closeness the way Hollowcurse once had, reaching and grasping and trying, again and again, to drag her into the exact range it needed to matter.
Grim Ward answered every attempt with cost, and Silent Fang answered every opening with speed, and by the time the Hunger finally understood it would never get close enough to feed, it had already lost far more than it had ever managed to take.
[Stage cleared. Choose one card.]
Veilfang — Active. A powerful ranged bite, full drain potency delivered without any contact at all.
Reaching Grasp — Passive. Extends the range of every ability in this deck significantly.
Thornbound — Passive. Marked enemies take escalating damage over time, regardless of distance or line of sight.
"Reaching Grasp," Lily said. "Let everything I have finally answer to the same rule."
[Card acquired: Reaching Grasp]
The fifth and final trial opened onto a place with no fog, no mirrors, no hiding at all, just open white-black space and a presence waiting at its exact center that felt, unmistakably, like being watched by something that had already finished reading her.
[Stage 5: The Last Veil]
[Boss: The Watcher Beyond the Veil]
It didn’t move so much as observe, and Lily understood immediately, the way she’d understood Vantress the moment their own fight began, that this was the cave’s final honest question. Could she hurt something that had already seen everything she might do, before she did it?
The Watcher struck the instant it finished reading her opening stance, fast and certain, and Lily met the strike with Grim Ward already primed, punishing the closeness before it could fully land.
The Watcher adjusted, retreating to range, and found Reaching Grasp waiting there too, every one of her abilities suddenly just as dangerous from a distance as they’d ever been up close.
"You read me once," she said, whip trailing patient, waiting silence. "You don’t get to read the version of me that walked out of this cave."
She ended it the way she’d ended everything since the second stage, from exactly the distance the old her would never have trusted, and the Watcher came apart without ever once managing to close the gap between them.
[Final stage cleared. Choose your signature card.]
Veilfang Reach — Ultimate deck signature. Every drain in this deck applies at any range, full potency, no contact required, ever again.
Absolute Veil — Passive. Permanent stealth while not actively attacking.
The Long Bite — Transformation. Temporary, massive increase to range and drain potency.
Lily looked at the three a long moment, and thought of a whip that had once needed her standing far too close to something that wanted her dead.
"Veilfang Reach," she said. "Let the deck carry the whole lesson in its name."
[Card acquired: Veilfang Reach]
[Deck complete: Veilfang Reach]
1. Fangmark Absolute — ranged mark, persistent drain, no renewal needed. 2. Silent Fang — instant drain, no sustained contact required. 3. Grim Ward — punishes anything that closes distance on you. 4. Reaching Grasp — extends every ability’s range significantly. 5. Veilfang Reach — full drain potency at any range, permanently.
The grey room reassembled itself, quiet and still, and Lily stood there a moment, five new cards settling into a deck that no longer needed her standing anywhere near danger to make it count.
"Reach," she said softly, testing the word the way she once tested silence itself before trusting it in a real fight. "Yes. That’s exactly what I was missing."
The stone arch opened behind her, and she stepped back out into the evening, already looking forward to the day someone tried to close distance on her again and discovered, too late, exactly how much that had stopped working.
