Chapter 699: Is My Hair White?
"Brother Zhang, we haven’t eaten yet. We were waiting for you!"
Bai Yifan bared his teeth and smiled at Zhang Yiming, spreading his empty hands.
Why could Brother Zhang only see that his older sister hadn’t eaten?
It was only then that Zhang Yiming noticed that no one had touched their chopsticks.
"I... don’t really eat much, you guys go ahead!"
Zhang Yiming looked a bit awkward, but he quickly regained his composure, sitting on the stool with an empty bowl in front of him, without picking up the chopsticks.
"You should eat a little! Brother Zhang, you have a sense of taste, right? At least taste your cooking, in case it’s not good."
Bai Yifan was particularly enthusiastic with Zhang Yiming, even personally handing him a pair of chopsticks.
Because later, when he leaves, he would get four cans of milk powder, which made him quite excited just thinking about it.
Zhang Yiming paused, took the chopsticks, and grabbed another pair to use as serving chopsticks.
Finally, the meal began.
Bai Yifan happily ate the dishes, sipping the warm rib soup, his eyes narrowing in contentment.
Zhang Yiming didn’t eat much, only occasionally picking up a bite, chewing slowly, looking gentle and well-mannered.
After just five minutes, Zhang Yiming suddenly stood up.
"I’ll go to the doorway for a bit."
He gave a heads-up and rushed out.
"Brother Zhang seems fine, his mood swings aren’t as big as you said, just a bit melancholic at the beginning," Bai Yifan whispered to Fan Liping when Zhang Yiming wasn’t around.
Fan Liping wore a bitter smile, gently shook his head, and said, "Just pretend I didn’t say anything this morning!"
Recently, the zombies in the village were almost driven to collective suicide by these brainwaves!
Now, Fan Tangtang has calmed down, and the violent brainwave has returned to calmness, becoming like before.
Sometimes, it’s hard to explain.
Fan Liping didn’t want to speak ill of Zhang Yiming behind his back; since Zhang Yiming had adjusted himself, he decided not to talk about it anymore.
He understood that his family could only side with Zhang Yiming, and following him was the only way to ensure his son’s safety in the apocalypse.
Otherwise, they couldn’t escape from the research facilities that wanted to capture Fan Tangtang for studies.
Even though Fan Tangtang’s brainwaves were powerful, and he was strong, his immature mind would easily get deceived.
Bai Yifan didn’t have much of a reaction to Fan Liping’s words.
He thought about Fan Liping’s comment on Brother Zhang being abnormal, thinking it was just occasional violence.
He could clearly sense that today’s Brother Zhang had a bit more aggression compared to before, but he was still Zhang Yiming, the Zhang Yiming who could use milk powder to stop him.
That was enough!
Bai Yifan resolutely believed Zhang Yiming was the gentlest zombie in the world!
If others knew Bai Yifan’s thoughts, they would certainly curse him out.
Associating zombies with gentleness was enough for others to think Bai Yifan was out of his mind.
After a couple of sentences, Zhang Yiming had already come back inside, his arms full of down jackets.
Within minutes, snow had accumulated all over Zhang Yiming.
Snow covered his hair, hiding the black strands completely.
"Hurry and put on the thick clothes!"
Zhang Yiming placed the down jackets on the sofa, his eyes resting on them momentarily, turning them over a couple of times with his gloved hands.
He only felt relieved after confirming there was no black blood on them.
In fact, his brainwaves had already scanned through the zombies’ brains from which the down jackets came, knowing they obeyed his orders, and their decayed fingers hadn’t dirtied the jackets.
Even so, he remained extremely cautious.
More careful than anyone else.
Soon everyone changed into down jackets, and Zhang Yiming picked a silver-white one to wear.
"It’s really warm, thanks, Brother Zhang!"
Bai Yifan pulled the tag off the down jacket, happily patting it.
The jacket fit well, and it was a big brand.
"It’s no trouble at all."
Zhang Yiming smiled faintly, his gaze gently lingering on Bai Xiqin’s pink down jacket.
The menace in him had almost entirely dissipated, returning to the warm and sunny Zhang Yiming of a few days ago.
The image of the Zombie Emperor Zhang Yiming was no longer visible.
Yet, from time to time, exhaustion and repression still flickered in his eyes.
Ten years.
Ten years of loneliness, ten years of violence and bloodthirstiness, ten years of life and death separation.
All the longing, all the bloodlust, all the anger were buried deep in Zhang Yiming’s heart, never told to anyone.
Nor did he want to tell anyone.
The Zhang Yiming in his memory once only wanted to destroy the world.
Now, whether it’s Zhang Yiming or Zombie Emperor Zhang Yiming, more than any other survivor, he hoped the world would return to normal sooner.
After dinner, Bai Xiqin and the others prepared to head back.
The sudden heavy snow, family members at the safety base didn’t know if they were cold. The bus had warm clothes, but the heating devices were stored elsewhere.
The snow fell in large chunks on each person; it was too cold to ride a bike.
"There’s a clean car up ahead; you can take it back!"
Zhang Yiming led them towards the village exit, pointing at a car at the village entrance.
The car had been parked in the snow for a while, covered with thick snow.
Leng Yebai walked alongside Bai Xiqin, pushing a bike, with Zhang Yiming on the other side of Bai Xiqin.
"Alright, thank you."
Bai Xiqin smiled, her fingers tucked in the down jacket, her face and nose a bit red from the cold.
Zhang Yiming looked at Bai Xiqin and felt a slight sense of regret. He shouldn’t have let his brainwaves run wild, causing her to come such a long way.
Bai Xiqin naturally saw the regret on Zhang Yiming’s face and said with a smile, "The snow is really heavy, but the scenery is beautiful."
"Yes, indeed!"
Bai Yifan dragged a wooden board at the back, stacked with milk powder cans, grinning widely.
"You’re taking so much?"
Bai Xiqin looked at Bai Yifan, a twitch forming at the corner of her mouth.
Is that okay?
"Not too much, I can pull it."
Bai Yifan blinked, not feeling he was being excessive.
He had worked for it, almost being mistaken for a voyeur in another world by his big sister.
Bai Xiqin shook her head, silently distancing herself from Bai Yifan.
Her little brother didn’t seem very smart.
"Our hair has turned white."
Leng Yebai suddenly held Bai Xiqin’s hand, pointing at her hair, then his own.
His voice was soft, his eyes gentle.
The snow was so heavy that their hair was quickly covered with white snow, no black strands visible.
"If we weather the storm together, it’s like growing old together."
Bai Xiqin’s ears turned even redder.
The car’s engine roared to life, Bai Yifan floored the accelerator, throwing up snow everywhere.
The icy road didn’t matter; Bai Xiqin had Control Ability and could drive back to the safe base.
Zhang Yiming stood in the snow, only turning away slowly after the car was out of sight.
On his way back, Zhang Yiming walked very, very slowly.
The relentless snow beat down on him, one cluster after another.
After a long while, Zhang Yiming returned to the yard.
"Tangtang, is my hair white?"
Zhang Yiming looked at Fan Tangtang playing in the snow and suddenly asked.
"...It’s white."
Fan Tangtang looked at the snow-clad Zhang Yiming, timidly answering.
Hearing Fan Tangtang’s response, Zhang Yiming suddenly smiled.
