Reborn as a Dragon:Rise of The Draconic King

Chapter 132 - 127: The Legacy Beyond Kings (Part 2)

John remained standing before the empty pedestal.

Golden light from the surrounding roots bathed the ancient hall in a tranquil glow, illuminating hundreds of crystal statues that had silently watched over this place for untold ages.

The silence wasn’t oppressive.

It was reverent.

Every statue seemed to carry a story.

A life.

A sacrifice.

John slowly walked around the circular chamber.

The closer he came to each statue, the more details he noticed.

Some Dragon Kings were massive even in humanoid form, with horns resembling ancient trees and scales carved into their skin like polished gemstones.

Others appeared almost completely human.

One had only a pair of golden eyes to hint at draconic heritage.

Another possessed wings of crystal rather than flesh.

No two looked alike.

"...They all evolved differently."

The World Tree answered immediately.

"Correct."

"There has never been a single path for Dragon Kings."

John stopped before the statue of a woman carrying no weapon.

She held the hand of a small child while another hand rested upon a dragon sleeping peacefully beside her.

"...She wasn’t a warrior."

"No."

"What happened to her?"

The World Tree’s voice became softer.

"She united seven kingdoms that had warred for over three centuries."

John blinked.

"Without fighting?"

"She fought."

"But not with swords."

The answer lingered in his mind.

Another reminder that power alone wasn’t what made someone legendary.

---

He continued walking.

Another statue depicted a towering dragon kneeling before a village.

Children climbed over its enormous body, laughing without fear.

John smiled.

"The Great Dragon King."

"Yes."

"He often visited villages without guards."

John looked surprised.

"Wasn’t that dangerous?"

"He believed fear created distance."

"And distance created misunderstanding."

The World Tree paused.

"He preferred trust."

John looked at the statue for a long time.

The memories he had seen in Aurelius’ trial returned.

The paint on the dragon’s snout.

The laughter.

The festivals beneath the World Tree.

History remembered battles.

But perhaps...

The people who actually lived during those times remembered something else entirely.

Kindness.

---

John eventually reached a damaged statue.

Half its face had crumbled away.

Deep cracks ran across its body.

Unlike the others, no title floated above it.

Only empty space.

"What happened?"

Silence followed.

Several heartbeats passed before the World Tree answered.

"I removed its name."

John frowned.

"Why?"

"Because he abandoned his oath."

The atmosphere changed instantly.

John looked carefully at the broken statue.

"He betrayed the Dragon Kings?"

"No."

"He betrayed himself."

The answer confused him.

"I don’t understand."

The roots surrounding the chamber pulsed gently.

"He desired strength above all else."

"He believed protecting others required becoming invincible."

John remained quiet.

The story felt...

Uncomfortably familiar.

"He challenged Ancient Beasts."

"He hunted creatures far stronger than himself."

"He sought relics left behind by civilizations older than your own."

The World Tree continued calmly.

"His strength increased rapidly."

John nodded slowly.

"Then what happened?"

"He forgot why he sought that strength."

The chamber fell silent.

"He no longer protected villages."

"He no longer listened."

"He no longer guided."

"He conquered."

John stared at the cracked statue.

"So..."

"He became a tyrant."

"Yes."

The answer carried no anger.

Only sadness.

"I erased his title because titles are earned."

"They are not permanent."

---

John took a slow breath.

His eyes drifted unconsciously toward the dormant Dragon King’s Sigil resting within his storage ring.

Aurelius had warned him.

The World Tree had warned him.

Even the System itself rewarded his growth as a person before rewarding his strength.

Everything pointed toward the same lesson.

Strength without purpose inevitably lost its way.

---

The World Tree spoke again.

"You fear becoming like him."

John’s shoulders stiffened.

"...Maybe."

The voice remained gentle.

"Good."

He looked upward.

"Good?"

"Those who fear losing themselves..."

"...are often the ones who struggle hardest to remain true."

John smiled weakly.

"I hope you’re right."

---

The chamber’s golden light shifted.

New images appeared upon the crystal floor.

Not memories.

Maps.

An enormous continent stretched before John’s eyes.

It was far larger than any map he had seen before.

Mountain ranges divided vast regions.

Dense forests covered entire nations.

An ocean nearly half the size of the continent separated the eastern and western lands.

"This..."

"...is much bigger than I thought."

"The world is always larger than those who have yet to explore it."

The World Tree highlighted several locations.

One by one.

Far to the north.

A mountain range surrounded by perpetual storms.

"There sleeps an Ancient Beast."

Another light appeared beneath the western sea.

"There rests a Leviathan older than recorded history."

A third appeared within a crimson desert.

"There wanders a creature born before the rise of the first kingdoms."

John carefully studied every location.

"So these are..."

"Not enemies."

The World Tree corrected him.

"They are inhabitants."

John looked surprised.

"I assumed..."

"That all powerful creatures threatened civilization?"

"Some do."

"Many simply wish to be left alone."

The answer reminded John of dragons.

Most monsters attacked anything they encountered.

Ancient beings...

Apparently possessed their own societies.

Their own territories.

Perhaps even their own histories.

---

"The System adjusted your growth."

The World Tree suddenly changed the subject.

John nodded.

"It said weaker monsters barely provide experience now."

"That is correct."

"Why?"

The roots surrounding the chamber glowed brighter.

"Because growth is not measured by repetition."

"It is measured by challenge."

John listened carefully.

"A hatchling grows stronger hunting wolves."

"A mature dragon does not."

The explanation made perfect sense.

John thought back to his earliest days.

Every hunt had been dangerous.

Every victory uncertain.

Now...

Ordinary monsters rarely forced him to use his full strength.

Even if he defeated thousands...

His understanding of combat wouldn’t improve.

Neither would his instincts.

---

"The path ahead will become slower."

The World Tree continued.

"Every level will demand greater effort."

"Every evolution will require greater understanding."

John smiled.

"I expected that."

"You are not disappointed?"

He shook his head.

"If becoming stronger stayed easy forever..."

"...it wouldn’t mean anything."

The chamber brightened once more.

Approval.

The World Tree seemed pleased with his answer.

---

A faint blue notification appeared before him.

---

**"SYSTEM NOTICE"**

**Host has entered the Mid-Young Dragon Stage.**

Future progression has fundamentally changed.

Normal Monsters → Minimal Growth

Elite Monsters → Limited Growth

Lord-Class Monsters → Moderate Growth

Catastrophe-Class Opponents → Significant Growth

Ancient Beasts → Major Growth

Unknown Entities → Conditions Unmet

---

John read the notification twice.

One sentence immediately stood out.

"Unknown Entities."

He frowned.

"The System doesn’t recognize them?"

"It recognizes their existence."

The World Tree answered.

"It does not possess sufficient authority to classify them."

John immediately remembered Aurelius.

The System had failed to analyze him as well.

Not because it was defective.

Because some things simply existed beyond what it had been created to measure.

---

He looked toward the countless statues once again.

"Can I ask one final question?"

"You may."

John hesitated.

Then finally spoke.

"Why me?"

Silence answered him.

Long enough that John wondered if the World Tree intended to remain quiet.

Eventually...

The ancient voice returned.

"Would you like the simple answer..."

"...or the truthful one?"

John smiled.

"The truthful one."

The roots surrounding the chamber trembled gently.

"The simple answer is that your blood awakened the Legacy."

John nodded.

"And the truthful answer?"

A long pause followed.

Then the World Tree said something that made John’s heart stop.

"You were never chosen because you were the strongest."

"You were never chosen because you possessed talent."

"You were not even chosen because you were a dragon."

John’s breathing slowed.

"Then..."

"Why?"

The World Tree’s answer echoed throughout the Hall of Remembered Kings.

"Because when you were weak..."

"...you still chose to protect others."

John stood frozen.

Memories surfaced.

His earliest days as a hatchling.

The injured creatures he had spared despite being hungry.

The travelers he had helped before he possessed overwhelming strength.

The companions he had repeatedly risked himself for.

The World Tree continued.

"Power revealed your potential."

"Character revealed your worth."

The words settled deep within John’s heart.

For the first time since awakening the Legacy...

He understood.

It had never truly been about dragons.

It had always been about the kind of person worthy of carrying the burden left behind by those who came before.

And that realization felt heavier than any power he had yet obtained.
