Chapter 150 - 145: The Road Calls Again
The first rays of sunlight crept over the hills surrounding Greenhollow.
Unlike the previous mornings, there was a quiet anticipation in the air.
The village was waking as it always had, but for John and his companions, today marked the end of a Chapter in their journey.
John stood outside the inn with his travel pack resting beside him.
He looked up at the clear sky and took a slow breath.
"...Time to move forward."
Behind him, the inn’s door opened.
Lythriel stepped outside, fastening the cloak around her shoulders.
She noticed John staring toward the eastern road.
"You’ve been awake for a while."
John smiled.
"I couldn’t sleep much after last night."
She walked over to stand beside him.
"...Me neither."
Neither of them said anything else.
There wasn’t much to say.
Some places had a way of becoming important before you even realized it.
Greenhollow was one of those places.
---
Breakfast was quieter than usual.
The innkeeper still wore her familiar smile, but there was a hint of sadness behind it.
"I packed some food for the road."
She placed several cloth-wrapped bundles on the table.
"You really didn’t have to," John said.
She folded her arms.
"And let my favorite guests leave hungry?"
Lythriel grinned.
"I knew she liked us."
"I never said that."
"You didn’t have to."
The innkeeper shook her head with a laugh.
"I’ll miss you four."
Sylvara smiled warmly.
"We’ll miss you too."
---
Nathan burst through the front door just as everyone finished eating.
He was breathing heavily, clearly having run all the way from home.
"I made it!"
His parents followed behind at a much slower pace.
His mother sighed.
"I told him you wouldn’t leave without saying goodbye."
Nathan ignored her and stopped in front of John.
"...You’re really going?"
John nodded gently.
"It’s time."
The boy lowered his head.
"Oh..."
John crouched so they were eye level.
"You’ll keep practicing?"
Nathan nodded immediately.
"I promise."
"And what did I tell you?"
The boy answered without hesitation.
"Don’t rush."
"Learn the basics."
"And don’t give up when I fall."
John smiled.
"Good."
Nathan suddenly held out his wooden sword.
"I want you to have this."
John blinked.
"This is yours."
"I know."
"But Grandpa said heroes always carry something that reminds them of home."
John was silent.
He accepted the small wooden sword with both hands.
"...I’ll take good care of it."
Nathan’s face lit up.
---
Outside, several villagers had gathered near the village gate.
Word had spread quickly.
Harvin the blacksmith walked forward first.
"If you ever pass this way again..."
"My forge will always be open."
John bowed his head respectfully.
"Thank you."
Old Mira handed Sylvara a small pouch filled with freshly dried herbs.
"For the journey."
Sylvara accepted it gratefully.
"I’ll treasure them."
The village teacher shook Aerion’s hand.
"Our children learned more in these few weeks than you realize."
Aerion smiled.
"They taught me a few things as well."
Lythriel received a warm hug from several women she had spent time with weaving flower crowns.
"You’ll come back someday?"
One of them asked hopefully.
Lythriel glanced toward John before smiling.
"I’d like that."
---
Finally...
Elder Rowan stepped forward.
He carried his walking staff as always.
For several moments, he simply looked at John.
Then he smiled.
"When you first arrived..."
"I saw a young dragon carrying the weight of the world."
John listened quietly.
"Today..."
"I see someone who understands he doesn’t have to carry it alone."
John lowered his head slightly.
"...I had good teachers."
The elder chuckled.
"No."
"You had good friends."
---
No grand speeches followed.
No dramatic farewells.
Just honest handshakes.
Warm smiles.
And promises to visit again.
It somehow felt more meaningful that way.
---
The four companions slowly walked toward the eastern road.
Nathan waved both arms as hard as he could.
"Don’t forget us!"
John turned around.
He raised a hand and waved back.
"I won’t."
He meant it.
---
The road climbed gently through the hills.
When they reached the top, Greenhollow came into view one last time.
The village looked small from the distance.
Thin trails of smoke rose from chimneys.
The Silverstream reflected the morning sunlight.
The rebuilt bridge stood proudly across the river.
Lythriel stopped walking.
"So..."
"...This is goodbye."
John looked back.
"No."
She looked at him curiously.
"It’s ’see you again.’"
A smile slowly spread across her face.
"I like that better."
---
They continued their journey.
The valley gradually disappeared behind the rolling hills.
For a long time, no one spoke.
Each was lost in their own thoughts.
Eventually, Aerion broke the silence.
"Our next destination lies northeast."
John looked toward him.
"The Kingdom of Valenor."
Lythriel raised an eyebrow.
"I’ve heard of it."
"A prosperous kingdom."
Aerion nodded.
"Trade routes from three regions meet there."
"It’s also home to one of the oldest libraries in this part of the continent."
John’s interest was immediately piqued.
"A library?"
Aerion noticed the expression on his face.
"I thought that might catch your attention."
John laughed.
"I’m curious."
"About books?"
"About history."
There were still countless mysteries surrounding the Dragon King’s legacy.
The world itself held many unanswered questions.
If answers existed...
A library seemed as good a place as any to begin looking.
---
They walked for another hour before reaching a crossroads.
A weathered stone marker stood beside the road.
One sign pointed back toward Greenhollow.
The other toward Valenor.
John paused briefly.
Not because he doubted his choice.
But because he wanted to remember this moment.
Greenhollow had changed him.
Not through battles.
Not through ancient powers.
But through ordinary people living ordinary lives.
He had arrived as someone obsessed with becoming stronger.
He left understanding that strength alone could never make a fulfilling life.
Relationships.
Kindness.
Shared memories.
Those things mattered too.
---
The Soul Raven landed silently on a tree branch overlooking the crossroads.
It watched the four travelers continue down the eastern road.
After several moments, it spoke quietly to itself.
"The fledgling has grown."
It wasn’t referring to John’s strength.
Not this time.
---
Far ahead, beyond the horizon...
The towers of Valenor remained hidden from sight.
New people.
New places.
New challenges.
And perhaps...
New answers.
John adjusted his pack and smiled.
"Let’s see what the next Chapter of this journey has in store."
The four companions continued onward as the morning sun rose higher, leaving Greenhollow behind—but carrying its lessons with them wherever the road would lead next.
