Longboats moved in steady rows between the two ships and the shore, cargo nets swaying with each load they carried.

The Rose’s claret sails had already been furled tight against her yards, and across the water the Fortune’s black canvas had been secured the same way. Most of the new sailors stood knee-deep in water so clear they could count their own toes, staring around like they had never laid eyes on a beach before.

Kit claimed a pale stone shelf for himself almost the moment they came ashore, boots kicked aside as though he’d been living there for years. Cudjoe was already herding the crew into work parties, while Sawyer vanished into the hardwood grove before anyone thought to ask where he’d gone.

Elsewhere, the rest of the crew scattered across the island with all the discipline of drunken gulls.

James stood beside Bonnet and Anne near the water, sand already creeping into his boots. He watched it all with a grin he made no effort to hide.

He spread both arms toward the forest as though unveiling a king’s treasure.

"There she is."

His grin widened. "Sand, trees, and enough water to drown in comfortably. Try not to weep."

Bonnet’s expression softened, close to reverence. His gaze swept from the stone to the stream winding out of the hardwoods, then along the long stretch of beach.

"Captain, I do believe this is a most excellent place."

He caught himself, a rueful smile touching his lips. "A hidden bay, fresh water close by, and enough cover to make a little secret of it. Very nearly perfect."

He turned a little, taking it all in, delight plain on him. "I daresay the world becomes far more agreeable when one is standing on a beach with the promise of adventure ahead. We shall, of course, require a roof and somewhere fit to eat supper, but I should hate to let comfort spoil the romance of it all."

Anne’s mouth curved, almost a smile. "That’s the best part of it, isn’t it? A place like this means there’s adventure ahead of us, not behind."

Bonnet turned that over with obvious pleasure. "Precisely so. One cannot ask for more than trouble enough to make it worth the effort."

James let out a short laugh, glancing from one to the other. "And this is only the beginning. Give us a month and we’ll have the place looking respectable, which is when something terrible turns up to spoil it."

"Naturally, Captain. I am nothing if not patient."

Bonnet looked down at his sleeve, already stained dark by salt spray, and sighed with genuine regret.

"Though I confess this garment may not survive long enough to see it."

Anne let a genuine smile slip. It was quick, small, and gone before it had the chance to linger.

Behind them, nearly the entire crew had given up pretending to work. Rum bottles passed from hand to hand along the beach while someone built a fire despite the bright daylight.

A knot of shirtless sailors splashed chest-deep through the shallows, dunking one another beneath the water while hurling insults loud enough to carry across the bay. One unfortunate soul had already lost his breeches to the tide and didn’t seem the least bit troubled by it.

James let the nonsense continue for another heartbeat before deciding he’d seen enough.

"Right, that’s enough o’ that!"

He clapped his hands together hard enough for the crack to slice through the noise that rolled across the beach.

"This isn’t playtime, ye lazy, rum-soaked crab bastards! Out of the water, the lot of ye! We’ve timber to cut and a harbor to raise!"

Cudjoe waded in first. He caught men by the hair one after another and steered them bodily toward the forest whether they had finished pulling their clothes back on or not.

"Axes tae the pines first, ye layabouts! Softwood cuts quick, and we’ll need plankin’ before we need anythin’ fancy. Leave the hardwood be till Sawyer’s had his say."

Whitlock came through behind him, already pointing men where they were needed.

"Water first. Find the stream and fill every cask we’ve got before some idiot decides seawater tastes close enough."

He jabbed a thumb toward the cargo still waiting on the beach.

"Move, then. Every barrel left sitting here is another barrel I’ve got to curse over later."

For once, neither man had any reason to argue with the other.

Sawyer moved from tree to tree with one palm laid flat against the trunks, muttering under his breath as if the island itself were a damaged ship he meant to talk into behaving.

Then, without warning or explanation, he tied strips of red cloth around three separate trees and left the rest to wonder whether he was marking timber, claiming the lot, or simply insulting the woods. When someone finally called after him, he either did not hear or pretended not to.

Near the rocky formation, Mary Read had climbed halfway up without waiting for anyone to tell her otherwise. Still dressed like a man, she shaded her eyes and watched the reef passage and the open water beyond.

"Best put someone up here!"

She called down. "Clear sight of the reef, clear sight of the channel, and enough warning to see trouble coming before it gets ideas!"

No one argued with that.

James watched the beach gradually turn into something that almost resembled organized work.

Before he could even think about asking for an update, the space in front of him shimmered and thickened.

Congratulations. Future generations may call this the birthplace of a legend, present generations are still trying to find where someone left the rum. Balance, fifty. Try not to spend it while you argue with poultry again.

James snorted, tucked the new total away for future mischief, and looked back across the beach.

Cove. Haven. Some names felt right on his tongue, yet meant nothing the moment he spoke them. Others were grand enough for a history book but rang hollow, like promises no honest man intended to keep.

He tried a few in his mind, wondering how to name this little scrub of land.
