The space in front of James thickened before his hand had even settled back at his side.

Stability : Undisturbed

Harbor : Sheltered Bay, Protected by Reefs

Facilities : None

Faction Status : Inconvenient Arrival

He read the display once.

By the end of it, he found himself mildly offended on the bay’s behalf. "Inconvenient Arrival. I’ll have that carved on my grave, see if I don’t. Finest epitaph a man could ask for."

It is comforting to know complete ecological disruption can still bring someone joy.

"Aye, well, the local wildlife never bought the place off a sketchy shop, did they?"

James folded his arms, still smiling. "Show me more than this. There’s got to be somethin’ worth lookin’ at besides an empty display with my own name scribbled under the complaints."

This is all I can show you for now. The rest of the island is waiting for the revolutionary strategy of going there.

The next display appeared before he’d even finished nodding.

🏴 [SITE SURVEY — THE BAY]

Terrain : Sheltered Bay, Pine Forest, Hardwood Grove, Freshwater Stream, Careening Beach

Resources Detected : Timber, Softwood (Abundant) | Timber, Hardwood (Moderate) | Fresh Water | Fertile Soil | Stone (Limited)

Buildable Area : Extensive (Coastal Flat)

Natural Defenses : Offshore Reef (Blocks Deep-Draft Vessels) | Concealed Coastline (Hidden from the Open Sea)

His eyes swept over the list.

Timber. Fresh water. Good soil.

He looked past the floating display to the bay itself. The beach stretched wide enough to haul up ship after ship without crowding. Beyond it, the sheltered water curved inland, broad and calm, with room enough to put a small fleet beyond the reef. The forest stood close behind, offering more timber than they could hope to use for years.

It was everything a pirate captain could ask for.

A place hidden from passing sails. A place with room to grow. A place that could feed itself instead of living one voyage at a time.

The grin crept back onto his face.

"What else you got?"

🏴 [GROWTH TIERS]

Tier I : Encampment

Tier II : Hideout

Tier III : Settlement

Tier IV : Pirate Haven

Tier V : Pirate Republic

James stared at the list a little longer than he’d intended.

Republic sat at the bottom, waiting beyond the first small step he’d only just taken. The sight of it pulled something tight in his chest before he was ready to admit why.

Then he laughed anyway.

"’Republic.’"

He shook his head. "I’ve got one crew for two bloody ships, and I’m already dreamin’ about runnin’ a damned nation."

I have elected not to calculate your current progress.

"Fair enough."

James waved a hand through the display.

It vanished.

He then continued, "Right then. What can I actually build here and now, without dreamin’ any further ahead than tomorrow?"

James stared over the list.

The voice had given him something that looked suspiciously like a game menu instead of a riddle wrapped in sarcasm.

Buildings. Costs. Workers. Time.

He knew that feeling.

Back in the day... future, he’d wasted entire nights staring at glowing screens, placing farms, upgrading walls, and waiting three hours for a wooden shack to finish building because apparently that was considered strategy.

Now he was standing on a real beach doing the same thing.

Except this time the workers complained, the buildings could collapse, and there was a very real chance an enemy might put a hole in him instead of a digital tower.

"What next, a little advisor poppin’ up tellin’ me to upgrade my town hall?"

That is an inaccurate description.

"Close enough."

He looked back at the list.

"Do I get little builders runnin’ around if I tap some button?"

No.

"Shame. Always thought those games were missin’ that bit of realism."

The primary difference is that these workers can quit, complain, and occasionally stab you.

"Sounds like fun."

The voice did not answer.

"I’ll take that silence as agreement."

The silence was an attempt to determine whether you are joking or genuinely this concerned with mobile entertainment while standing on the foundation of a future republic.

James laughed, loud enough to send a gull flapping into the air farther down the beach.

The laughter faded.

Then the numbers returned.

Sixty-nine souls aboard the Rose. Twenty already committed to keeping the Fortune afloat. That left considerably fewer than sixty-nine once both ships kept the crews they needed simply to sail home.

A storehouse alone demanded ten to fifteen hands. A pier wanted twenty. Add a cradle crew and a well crew, and there’d be no one left to actually live here while both ships were away earning the money that paid for any of it.

"Christ."

He rubbed a hand along his jaw.

"I’ve been sat here plannin’ a city with the manpower of a fishin’ village."

Nassau.

The answer arrived whole, needing no argument.

Nassau was the one place in the Caribbean where a man could always find people willing to sail anywhere and build anything, so long as he offered a reward worth the risk.

Thatch came to mind first.

Whether he could pull free of Nassau’s politics long enough, whether he’d even want to, or whether James could find him at all, were entirely different questions.

James knew better than to count on answers he hadn’t earned.

Hornigold disappeared from consideration almost as quickly.

A man tangled that deeply in Nassau’s factions and with the promise of a royal pardon drifting closer every passing season was the last person James intended to trust with the location of a secret he genuinely wanted kept.

Anne came more slowly.

Once she appeared in his thoughts, she refused to leave.

She could size up a room in minutes, see through a liar almost before he parted his lips open, and she was being wasted pouring drinks for men who’d never be half as interesting as she was.

But she wasn’t a pirate. Not yet. Maybe not ever.

Whatever James knew the future held, she hadn’t chosen this life herself. He wouldn’t build a haven by asking her to leap before she’d decided she even wanted the jump.

A haven built only for the handful of people he already liked wasn’t much of a haven.

What he truly needed was exactly what Nassau had always possessed in abundance, people with nowhere better to go and nothing left worth losing, searching for somewhere that would simply let them stay.

James let the final display fade away and rolled his shoulders.

The grin returned, broad and easy.

"Right then."

He said it to the bay, the forest, and anyone who might someday stand here beside him.

"Nassau it is. Let’s go find this place some proper hands."
