Cavan’s survey team returned on day eighty-three with results that changed the shape of everything Leon had been planning.

Not because the territory itself was extraordinary — flat grassland transitioning to light woodland, unremarkable by any standard except its proximity to the province’s existing boundary. What changed the picture was what the survey found buried within it.

"Two Thornfeld nodes," Cavan said, spreading his notes across the administrative table. "Confirmed. Both dormant, same as the corridor nodes were before activation." He pointed at his map. "But there’s something else. A third structure. Not a node — a settlement. Old. Pre-Aurelia, based on the construction style, though smaller than the fortress."

Leon looked at the map.

"Occupied?" he said.

"No," Cavan said. "Abandoned for at least a century, by the state of it. But intact enough to matter. Stone foundations, some standing walls. If it was built by the same people who built the fortress—"

"Yara needs to see it," Leon said.

"She’s already asking to go," Cavan said. "I told her to wait for your authorization."

Leon looked at the map again.

Eastern territory. Two nodes. An abandoned pre-Aurelia settlement. All of it sitting in unclaimed land between Ashford Province and the Valdris border.

He thought about Aurora’s question at the river.

What does it look like in another seventy-five days?

He was looking at part of the answer right now.

"Full expedition," he said. "You, Yara, Freya for the nodes, Gareth’s escort. I want a complete assessment within the week."

Cavan nodded and began marking his equipment list.

The mill’s second wheel came online two days later.

Pratt Olsen stood at the mechanism with his grandson beside him — the boy considerably taller than he’d been on the day Leon first met the family at the old, abandoned structure, and now genuinely useful rather than simply present, having spent months absorbing his grandfather’s trade with the focused attention of someone who had decided this was going to be his life’s work.

The second wheel turned for the first time at midday, water from a diverted channel Cavan had engineered specifically for the expansion driving a mechanism that doubled the mill’s processing capacity in a single afternoon.

"Bi-weekly shipments," Isabella said, watching the wheel turn with her ledger already open. "Starting next cycle. The corridor craftspeople can produce faster than I projected — the second wheel was the actual bottleneck, not their capacity."

"How much faster does this make the Erenia revenue?" Leon said.

"Isabella’s projection three days ago said forty percent addition to quarterly revenue within two cycles," she said, referring to her own numbers with the slightly amused precision of someone quoting herself. "With the second wheel, that becomes forty percent within one cycle. The next quarterly payment—"

She said a number.

Leon looked at her.

"That’s not addition to the previous record," he said. "That’s a new category entirely."

"Yes," she said.

He thought about the treasury secretary receiving that filing. About the king, recovering and paying attention, seeing a number that made every argument about the province’s value self-evident without requiring a single additional word from Leon.

[Mill Expansion — Second Wheel Operational.]

[Processing Capacity: +100%]

The expedition east departed at dawn.

Leon didn’t go with them.

He had considered it — the pull toward being present at every significant discovery was strong, the same instinct that had kept him working alongside every construction project and every harvest since the first week. But Sera’s Thornwall follow-up correspondence needed his attention, and Isabella’s Erenia expansion required decisions only he could make about credit terms with the Banking Consortium, and the province itself needed the visible presence of its lord while an expedition into unclaimed territory near a foreign border was underway.

He stayed.

Cavan led the expedition personally, with Yara documenting everything through the abandoned settlement’s ruins, Freya assessing the two dormant nodes, and Gareth’s escort providing the security that unclaimed territory near a watchful neighbor’s border warranted.

They returned four days later with more than Leon had anticipated.

Yara presented her findings at the communal fire, the full council assembled, the particular energy of a discovery that mattered enough to warrant full attention.

"The settlement is Thornfeld," she said. "Older than the fortress — possibly the original settlement before they built the more defensible structure we’re restoring." She opened her notes. "There’s a library. Partially collapsed, but the stone shelving survived, and some of what was stored on it survived with it."

"How much survived?" Leon said.

"Enough," Yara said. "Construction techniques. Convergence network theory that goes beyond what Elder Mira’s oral histories preserved. And—" she paused, choosing her next words carefully "—records of a eighth node. One that isn’t in the network we’ve been mapping."

The fire went quiet.

"Where?" Leon said.

"The records don’t specify a location clearly," Yara said. "But they describe it as the network’s counterweight. Where the other seven nodes channel life energy, this eighth node channels something the Thornfeld texts call ’stillness.’" She looked at Leon. "I don’t fully understand the translation yet. It may take weeks to work through the material properly."

Freya spoke from her position near the fire.

"I felt something while we were there," she said. "Not at either of the two nodes we activated. Somewhere further east, at the edge of my range. A pressure, like the resonance chamber but inverted." She paused. "If there’s an eighth node, and it channels something opposite to what the seven do—"

"Then finding it matters considerably," Davan said.

Leon looked at the assembled council.

At Yara’s notes, at Freya’s assessment, at Cavan’s territorial map now marked with two newly activated nodes and one significant discovery.

"The two nodes you activated," he said. "What’s the network status now?"

"Six of seven," Freya said. "One more than the corridor nodes brought us to. The propagation is stronger, more precise. I can direct enhancement toward specific zones now rather than just broad terrain."

"And the seventh?"

"The palace node," Freya said. "Already active, on its own timeline, through the river." She paused. "Six of seven that we’ve directly activated, plus the palace node bringing the total functional count to seven. Full resonance, if Elder Mira’s threshold description holds."

[Convergence Network Status: 7 of 7 Primary Nodes Active.]

[Full Resonance Achieved.]

[Effect: Network-wide amplification. All previous enhancements strengthened.]

[New Discovery: Eighth Node — Unconfirmed Location. Nature: Unknown — "Stillness" designation.]

[Kingdom Points: +2,000]

Leon read the notification.

Full resonance.

Seven of seven primary nodes, the network complete in the way the Thornfeld family had originally designed it — reaching from the eastern territory through the corridor, through the province, through the river, to the palace itself.

And an eighth node, unconfirmed, doing something the seven together didn’t do.

"We claim the eastern territory," Leon said. "Formally. Today."

Isabella was already writing the filing.

The territorial claim registered with the crown district office within the hour — a formal declaration under the provincial charter’s expansion provisions, the same mechanism that had claimed the mill road corridor and the Draven communities.

The intelligence network flagged the response within the day.

[INTELLIGENCE NETWORK — Update 19.]

[Adrian Ashford — Informed of eastern territorial claim. Assessment: Concerned. The claimed territory borders Valdris directly — Adrian’s dynastic proposal assumed Ashford Province would remain contained within its previous boundaries.]

[Valdris — King Oswin’s court has received notification of the territorial claim through standard diplomatic channels. Princess Aurora’s response: Unknown — she has requested a private briefing with her father.]

Leon read the update.

The province now shared a border with Valdris directly.

Which meant every future interaction with that kingdom happened across a boundary the province controlled, rather than through the buffer of unclaimed territory that had existed before.

He thought about what Aurora had said.

The thing that grows in difficult ground grows stronger than the thing that grows in easy soil.

He wondered what she made of a province that had just grown its way to her father’s border in eighty-three days.

That evening, Leon stood at the fortress observation post with Davan.

The strategist had asked to come — an unusual request, since Davan navigated by sound and the observation post’s primary value was visual. But he had said he wanted to hear the province from its highest point, and Leon had understood well enough not to question it.

"Full resonance," Davan said. "Seven nodes. A border with Valdris. A dynastic proposal Aurora is holding at bay." He tilted his head, listening to something Leon couldn’t identify. "The eighth node concerns me more than any of it."

"Why?" Leon said.

"Because everything else has a known shape," Davan said. "I can model soldiers, treaties, trade routes, even the resonance network’s known effects. Stillness — I don’t know what that opposes, what it costs to activate, or who built it to counter what." He paused. "Unknown variables are the only thing in this province I genuinely can’t plan around."

Leon looked east, toward territory that was now formally provincial ground, toward a discovery that Yara would spend weeks translating.

"Then we go slowly with it," he said. "The seven nodes took us eighty days and they were built to be found and used. The eighth wasn’t in any of the records until now. That’s not an accident."

"No," Davan said. "It isn’t."

They stood together at the observation post as the light failed over the capital, over the corridor, over territory that had been unclaimed a week ago and now belonged to a province that hadn’t existed ninety days before that.

Leon read the summary.

Then looked at the darkening horizon one more time.

Let her brief her father, he thought.

Let him see exactly what’s growing on his border.
