Word traveled faster than Arlen expected, though considerably more gently than his months of private anxiety had led him to fear.

By the following morning, Mina greeted him at the registration counter with a small, genuine smile that told him the guild’s internal records had already been updated. "Confirmed Awakened, Aura affinity. Congratulations. That’s a proper milestone, especially this early in your career."

"Feels strange, having it official," Arlen admitted.

"Get used to the feeling. Most adventurers chase this exact moment for years before it arrives, if it arrives at all." She made a small notation in his file. "Your quest eligibility expands with this too, by the way. Several postings that were previously restricted to confirmed Awakened adventurers are open to you now, regardless of rank. Worth browsing the board properly once the celebrating’s out of your system."

Arlen absorbed that with quiet satisfaction, understanding immediately how directly it connected to the promise he’d made himself after Millbrook, though he found himself content, for now, simply enjoying the moment rather than rushing toward whatever came next.

He spent the rest of that morning attending to small, ordinary business around the guild hall — updating his supply kit, checking in briefly with Brakka about Emberroot prices, exchanging a few pleasant words with Mina about nothing in particular — and found the day carrying a lightness he hadn’t quite expected, the quiet satisfaction of a milestone reached settling comfortably into the rhythm of an otherwise unremarkable afternoon.

Cobb and Sil found him at the tavern that evening, both already aware of the news through the same efficient guild grapevine that had carried it to Mina.

"Confirmed Awakened," Cobb said, dropping into his usual seat with a grin. "Knew it was coming, but still. That’s proper news, Arlen."

"Drinks are on you," Sil added, with the same dry humor he’d used the day of Arlen’s rank promotion months earlier.

"I still don’t drink."

"Then buy the food. Same principle applies regardless of the occasion."

Arlen laughed, genuinely, and waved down one of the tavern staff to order a round of proper meals for the table, the modest expense feeling entirely worth it for the occasion. He found himself, for the length of that evening, simply enjoying the easy warmth of celebrating something real with people who’d become, gradually and without any single dramatic moment, something close to family in this life he’d built for himself.

Reya’s party joined them partway through the evening, Dorn offering a hearty, congratulatory clap on the shoulder that nearly knocked Arlen off his bench, while Fennis, characteristically understated, simply raised her mug in the same quiet acknowledgment she’d shown after the goblin camp.

"Confirmed Awakened, and you’re still only Rank E," Reya observed, settling into the conversation with her usual sharp assessment. "You’ll climb fast now, if you keep taking on the kind of work your new eligibility opens up."

"I’m not in a hurry," Arlen said, and meant it, though the words carried a different weight now than they might have a year earlier. "Rank’s not really the point, for me. I just want to actually be capable of whatever comes next, whenever it arrives."

"That’s a good way to think about it," Reya said, something thoughtful behind her usual confidence. "Wish more adventurers your rank understood that. Most people chase the number itself and end up overextended long before they’re actually ready for what the number implies."

"Speaking of which," Dorn added, leaning back with a satisfied groan after finishing his meal, "any idea what you’ll actually do with the new eligibility? Guild board’s got a fair few postings marked for confirmed Awakened only. Some of them pay considerably better than what we’ve been taking on."

"Haven’t looked properly yet," Arlen admitted. "Wanted to enjoy today before worrying about tomorrow’s work."

"Sensible," Reya said. "Rare, in this line of work, but sensible."

The evening wound down eventually into comfortable, easy conversation, stories traded about old quests and near misses, Dorn’s usual exaggerated retelling of the wasp swarm incident drawing groans and laughter in equal measure from everyone who’d heard it a dozen times before. Arlen found himself, walking back toward his room afterward, turning over the day’s events with the same careful, satisfied reflection he gave most significant moments now.

He stopped by Ysolde’s kitchen before retiring for the night, mostly out of habit, and found her willing to celebrate in her own practical way — a small, extra portion of the evening’s stew, offered with a knowing look rather than any formal acknowledgment.

"Heard the news," she said. "Confirmed Awakened. Suppose that means you’ll be eating better than guild stew before too long, once the higher-paying work starts coming your way."

"I like the stew fine," Arlen said, accepting the bowl gratefully.

"Everyone likes the stew fine when they’re hungry enough. Doesn’t mean it’s the best this world has to offer." Ysolde studied him a moment, something warm beneath her usual brisk manner. "You ever bring me anything from that ember-tailed lizard you mentioned a while back? Still curious how that turned out, properly seasoned."

"Next time I catch one," Arlen promised. "I owe you a proper accounting, at least. Vinegar helps cut the richness, if you’re ever curious enough to try preparing it yourself."

"Might just do that." Ysolde waved him off toward a corner table, already turning back to her evening cleanup. "Go on, eat properly. Can’t have a confirmed Awakened adventurer going to bed on an empty stomach. Bad for guild morale."

He finished his meal in comfortable quiet, the tavern’s evening noise settling around him, and made his way to his room not long after, the day’s satisfaction settling into something steady and grounded rather than the anxious anticipation he might have expected months earlier, back when the formal evaluation had still loomed ahead of him as an uncertain, faintly frightening prospect.

He wrote about it before sleep took him, his journal entry carrying a lighter, more settled energy than his more introspective entries of recent weeks.

Confirmed Awakened status is officially mine now. Strange, how much lighter this feels than the months of quiet anxiety leading up to it. Cobb and Sil celebrated like it was simply good news, nothing more complicated than that. Reya offered her usual sharp, practical perspective. Even Ysolde noticed, in her own way, and asked after that lizard meat like an old friend catching up rather than anything formal.

I keep thinking about what Reya said — that rank isn’t really the point for me, that I just want to be properly capable of whatever comes next. I think that’s true, more than I realized until I heard it said aloud. This confirmation doesn’t change who I am or what I’m working toward. It just makes one small piece of the truth official, finally settled rather than carefully maintained.

Dorn asked what I’ll do with the new eligibility. I didn’t have a proper answer yet, and I think that was the right choice tonight — better to simply enjoy the milestone than rush straight past it toward whatever comes next.

Tomorrow, though, I want to speak with Garrett about what comes next in my training now that the foundation’s properly behind me. There’s still so much I haven’t learned yet — real technique, not just raw ability. I’d like to build that properly before I go looking for whatever new opportunities my confirmed status has opened up.

He closed the journal, the evening settling comfortably around him, and found himself looking forward, with quiet and steady anticipation, to whatever Garrett had waiting for him once real technique became the focus of his training rather than simple foundation.
