Chapter 99 — Terrain Turns Against Them

They broke camp at first light despite the previous night’s exhaustion, Ilyana judging the risk of remaining static considerably greater than the risk of pushing forward while everyone was still recovering.

"We rest properly once we’ve put distance between ourselves and last night’s engagement site," she said. "Staying here invites another test of our perimeter, and I’d rather not gift the corruption a second opportunity to refine its approach against us."

Grennig, still favoring his bandaged side, insisted on continuing under his own power rather than being carried, and Arlen found himself, watching the dwarf’s stubborn determination, understanding exactly the kind of grim resolve that had carried the man this far in his career.

"Don’t fuss over me," Grennig told Aria, when she pressed once more about his condition. "I’ve fought through worse. Keep your attention on whoever needs it more."

The terrain shifted noticeably within the first hour of travel, the ancient, towering trees giving way gradually to something considerably stranger — the ground itself growing pale and cracked, patches of what looked like crystallized soil spreading in irregular veins across the forest floor, the air carrying an increasingly metallic, unpleasant taste that made Arlen’s throat feel tight even through careful, shallow breathing.

"This matches what I found in the valley," he said, examining a patch of the crystallized ground. "Different creature, different location, but the same underlying corruption, near enough."

"Confirms my working theory," Maren said, studying the terrain with careful, professional attention. "Whatever’s generating this effect operates through a consistent, underlying mechanism, regardless of which specific site it’s manifesting through."

Kess, moving ahead to scout the trail properly, called back a warning within the hour. "Ground’s unstable up here. Whole section looks ready to give way."

They approached carefully, and Arlen found the warning entirely justified — a wide stretch of forest floor had collapsed inward, revealing a shallow, jagged depression where the crystallized corruption had apparently eaten through whatever structural integrity the soil once possessed, the pale, glassy edges of the collapse looking sharp enough to cause serious injury to anyone who stumbled into it unprepared.

"We go around," Ilyana decided, studying the alternate route Kess’s scouting had already identified. "Slower, but safer."

The detour cost them nearly two hours, and Arlen found the delay wearing on the whole party’s already-frayed patience, the accumulated fatigue of the previous night’s fighting compounding with the day’s difficult terrain in ways that made even simple conversation feel like unwelcome effort.

It was mid-afternoon when the terrain itself finally, actively turned against them.

The ground beneath Selene’s feet gave way without warning, a section of crystallized earth crumbling into another hidden depression, and only Doran’s quick reaction — his shield arm catching her before she fell fully through — kept the incident from becoming a serious injury.

"Thank you," Selene managed, breathing hard, already weaving a quick stabilizing spell to reinforce the ground beneath the rest of the party’s feet.

"This whole area’s compromised," Osric said, examining the ground with careful, magical scrutiny. "The corruption’s weakened the earth’s integrity considerably beyond what’s visible on the surface. We should assume any crystallized patch could give way without warning."

They pressed on with considerably more caution after that, Rurik’s keen senses proving invaluable for identifying unstable ground before anyone stepped onto it, and Arlen found himself calling on Earthen Grip periodically, sensing subtle vibrations that occasionally warned of hollow, unstable sections moments before Rurik’s own detection caught them.

"Good instinct," Rurik said, noting Arlen’s warning on one such occasion. "You’ve got a feel for the ground most people your rank don’t manage."

"Comes from a lot of practice reading terrain the hard way," Arlen said, which was, in its own careful fashion, entirely true.

The environmental hazards continued through the afternoon — patches of air that carried a faint, disorienting quality when breathed too deeply, forcing the party to route around them; strange, crystallized growths that Osric warned might carry corrosive properties if touched carelessly; the ground itself groaning and shifting periodically in ways that kept everyone’s nerves permanently on edge.

"How much further?" Doran asked, during a brief rest as the afternoon light began slanting toward evening.

"Scout estimates suggest we’re close," Ilyana said, consulting her rough map with evident strain. "Possibly by tomorrow, if this terrain doesn’t slow us further."

Maren, walking near the party’s center, carried an expression of growing concern that Arlen found himself watching with quiet unease. "The corruption’s influence on the physical environment is more extensive than I initially assessed. This isn’t simply producing hostile creatures. It’s actively degrading the land itself."

"Is that worse?" Arlen asked. "For the purification, I mean."

"Considerably," Maren admitted. "The more thoroughly it’s settled into the physical environment, the more sustained and difficult the actual purification process will likely prove. I won’t know the full scope until I’m actually working the site directly, but I’d be lying if I said today hasn’t concerned me."

They made camp that evening with the same doubled vigilance the previous night’s attack had demanded, though the terrain itself now added its own layer of difficulty — Osric spending considerable effort warding the immediate campsite against any further ground collapse, Rurik and Kess both maintaining careful, alert watch rather than trusting the crystallized earth to remain stable through the night.

Arlen found himself, once the camp had properly settled, sharing a quiet moment with Halvard near the fire’s edge, both of them too exhausted for much beyond simple, companionable silence.

"This is harder than I expected," Halvard admitted, unusually candid given his typically reserved manner. "Not just the fighting. The terrain itself fighting us feels considerably more unsettling, somehow."

"I keep thinking about what Maren said," Arlen replied. "That the epicenter itself might prove considerably worse than anything we’ve faced so far, if this is just the surrounding influence."

"We’ll manage," Halvard said, though his tone carried more determination than certainty. "This expedition’s proven itself capable of adapting to whatever it’s faced so far. I don’t see reason to doubt that now."

Arlen wrote briefly in his journal that evening, his hands steadier now than the previous night, though the entry carried a weight distinct from anything he’d written earlier in the expedition.

The terrain itself has turned against us — crystallized, unstable ground, collapsing sections, disorienting air. Selene nearly fell through a hidden depression today; Doran’s quick reaction spared her serious injury. Everyone’s contributing what they can to navigate it properly — Rurik’s senses, Osric’s magic, my own growing feel for the ground beneath us.

Maren’s genuinely concerned now, more openly than I’ve seen from her since this expedition began. The corruption’s settled deeper into this land than Millbrook’s ever did. Whatever waits at the actual site, I suspect tomorrow will demand considerably more from all of us than today already has.

I don’t know how much further this goes before we finally reach it. I only know we’re closer now than we’ve ever been, and that everything this expedition has faced so far feels, increasingly, like preparation for something considerably worse still waiting ahead.

He closed the journal, the camp settling into its watchful, exhausted quiet around him, and found sleep slower to arrive than usual despite his accumulated fatigue, his mind turning over every careful warning the day had offered about exactly what tomorrow might finally, fully reveal.
