Chapter 1748 - 1750: What Is Deceived Can Never Be True Happiness
Early the next morning, after breakfast, they saw the brothers from the Escort Agency off.
Once back in the courtyard, Xiaoxiao asked, "Fourth Brother, how’s Chuntao? Has her memory come back?"
Asked about this, Yang Dong replied, "They’ve already gone back to Stone Village, the very day we went to Lin County."
Yang Dong had returned from Lin County yesterday; as soon as he got home he hurried to Hope Academy, only to find out that Chuntao’s family had already gone back to Stone Village.
Hearing this, Xiaoxiao was quite surprised, but on second thought, it was about time they went back. Their whole family couldn’t just keep living here in Yang Family Village; they had to return eventually. After all, Stone Village was their home, and Li Chuntao’s injuries were almost healed, there was no need to stay here any longer.
"Fourth Brother, what are you planning to do?"
Yang Dong didn’t hide anything but said directly, "I’m thinking of finding a matchmaker in a few days to formally go to their house to propose and talk marriage."
"Mm, proposing is good. That way everything will be aboveboard in the future."
In Xiaoxiao’s view, this place was just troublesome. If it were modern times, you could chase however you wanted, talk to whoever you wanted. But here that wouldn’t do; she couldn’t just run to their house to find that Li Chuntao to chat with. They had to let a matchmaker go to the door first.
Only she was a bit worried: after losing her memory, would Li Chuntao still agree to this marriage?
Although Chuntao’s parents had already agreed that day, given how they doted on their daughter, this matter would probably still depend on Li Chuntao’s own wishes.
Forget it, no use thinking about it now, they’d talk about it when the time came.
Xiaoxiao didn’t say anything more and went into the house to look for Yang Ming.
Yang Dong, meanwhile, headed to the fish pond, and on the way there he passed by Yang Xiaocui’s house.
He had barely gotten close when he heard voices.
"What are you doing back here? We don’t have a sister like you. Mother’s already dead, we don’t need you pretending to come back and see her now. Just stay at that Yang Daniu’s house and rot there."
Then he saw Yang Xiaocui shoved out of the house.
He didn’t need to think to know: Yang Xiaocui had snuck back, wanting to kowtow in front of her mother’s spiritual tablet, and was refused by her brother.
Tears streaked down Yang Xiaocui’s face as she was pushed out. She turned her head and saw Yang Dong walking over.
Yang Dong didn’t even spare her a glance; he walked straight past as if she were a stranger.
Yang Xiaocui stood there, at a loss.
She did hate, but she had never meant to anger her mother to death. At the time she was just furious and wanted to get back at her. It had taken her so much effort to get a chance to come out and take a look, only to be shut out by her family.
Now it was too late to say anything. Because of that one moment of greed, she had pretended to faint, trying to cheat her way into happiness, but what she got in the end was never happiness.
What she got was her mother’s death, her brothers’ refusal to acknowledge her, and Yang Daniu’s constant beatings, curses, and torment.
She touched her face, swollen high from Yang Daniu’s blows.
When would days like this ever end!
Watching Yang Dong’s figure grow smaller and smaller in the distance, that little dream she had woven for herself completely shattered.
She lifted her feet and walked toward her in-laws’ house.
That home, she didn’t want to step into again, but she had no choice.
As soon as she entered the courtyard, she heard a voice like a devil’s: "Yang Xiaocui, where the hell did you go? Growing bold, aren’t you? Tell me, what were you sneaking out to do? Did you go whoring around, huh?"
As he spoke, Yang Daniu yanked her over and laid into her with another round of punches and kicks.
Yang Xiaocui could only use one arm to shield her head. "Don’t hit me, don’t hit me."
"You still dare talk back? I’ll beat you to death!"
"Wuu wuu, I won’t dare anymore."
