Chapter 1780 - 1782: Buying the Shop
Actually, the shopkeeper was telling the truth, such a shop would normally really require four hundred taels.
Yang Dong had already inquired around the County for several days and gained a general understanding of the prices.
But even so, Yang Dong still didn’t agree. The third sister-in-law gave him only two hundred taels, and with what little he had himself, it still wasn’t enough for three hundred taels. The main issue was that he felt guilty about making such a big decision on his own, as it was the first time he handled such a matter.
"Shopkeeper, if it doesn’t work out, let’s forget it. I don’t want to trouble you. I originally just wanted to rent a shop," Yang Dong said, feeling very regretful as he was about to leave.
When the shopkeeper saw Yang Dong was about to leave, he immediately stopped him, "Wait, how about two hundred and eighty taels?"
Yang Dong shook his head, "Shopkeeper, it’s really too much, I don’t have that kind of authority. If it were two hundred and thirty taels, I would grit my teeth and buy it, and assure my family that I got a deal on it."
Seeing the shopkeeper had no reaction, Yang Dong continued to turn and walk out.
At this moment, the shopkeeper called out, "If it’s two hundred and thirty taels, can you take it now?"
Yang Dong turned around and said, "I can."
"Alright, then you take the Silver now, and we’ll go to the government office right away to change the land deed."
The shopkeeper gritted his teeth to sell, just wanting to quickly exchange the shop for Silver, and then depart with his family immediately. Time really didn’t wait for anyone. If delayed further there, others might not give as much Silver, might even haggle the price just like that, wasting time and maybe not even have the Silver on hand to pay.
So losing seventy taels was seventy taels, no more fussing, make up the deficit by selling some antiques or something.
Upon hearing the shopkeeper agree, Yang Dong felt a bit delirious, did he really agree so easily? Had he known, he might as well have offered two hundred taels instead.
If the shopkeeper knew what Yang Dong thought, he would be furious enough to spit blood. Getting a bargain yet still pretending, the two exchanged money for the land deed and headed to the government office.
The shopkeeper continued talking, "Young man, you really got a great deal. If I weren’t in a hurry to get the money to take my whole family away, I wouldn’t sell so cheaply to you, definitely would have sold it for four hundred taels."
Yang Dong pressed his lips together, not saying a word, just listening to the shopkeeper talk on and on.
Soon the two arrived at the government office, slipped them some Silver, and the process was swift. Shortly, the land deed was in Yang Dong’s hand.
After finishing the business, the shopkeeper didn’t rush to leave but very genuinely introduced Yang Dong to suppliers, and Yang Dong, not being someone socially inept, reciprocated by inviting them for a meal, saying he would order from them before his shop opening.
After everything was done, Yang Dong still felt like it was a dream.
Holding the shop’s key, looking at the items inside, he finally felt like everything was real.
This occupied a whole day, and it was already dark by the time he got home.
As he walked into the house, he felt a bit apprehensive, sensing he might have taken on too big a task.
As soon as Yang Dong entered the courtyard, Yang Gang’s wife saw him and asked, "Fourth Brother, why are you back only now? How did it go today? Did you rent the shop?"
"Yes," Yang Dong replied and walked towards the house, "Second Sister-in-law, let’s talk inside."
Hearing this, she assumed it was rented, and Yang Gang’s wife hurriedly followed him inside, saying as she went, "Dad, Fourth Brother is back and said the shop is rented."
