Reborn as Eren Yeager: The Gacha System

Chapter 100: The Boy Who Remembers Nothing

The child arrived at the garden gate on an ordinary autumn morning, no older than six, filthy and silent, refusing to speak a single word to anyone who approached him.

"He was found near the old coastal ruins," the Garrison scout reported, exhausted from the two-day journey inland, mud still crusted on his boots. "No family. No papers. The healers say there’s nothing physically wrong with him, but he hasn’t spoken since we found him three days ago. Doesn’t cry. Doesn’t ask for anyone. Just watches. Someone suggested, given your family’s history with unusual cases, that you might know what to do with him."

Eren knelt before the boy, who stared back with eyes that carried something Eren recognized instantly, cold recognition settling low in his stomach — not fear, not confusion, but a strange, ancient stillness that no six-year-old should have been capable of holding.

"He’s not ordinary," Eren said quietly, meeting Mikasa’s eyes over the boy’s head. "Whatever’s happened to him, it’s connected to something bigger than a lost child."

Carla, ten years old now and curious in the fearless way only children managed, crouched down to the boy’s level without hesitation, ignoring her father’s instinctive protective flinch.

"What’s your name?"

The boy’s lips parted for the first time in three days, and the word that came out landed like a stone dropped into still water.

"Ymir," he whispered.

The garden went silent except for the wind moving through the pale, hardy flowers.

"That’s not possible," Mikasa said slowly. "Our Ymir’s alive. She’s twenty-one, she lives two hours south, we saw her at midsummer—"

"I don’t think he means her," Eren said, dread building steady in his chest. "I think he means the first one. The one who’s been bound in the Founder for two thousand years."

They brought the boy inside, fed him, wrapped him in blankets before the fire, and he ate mechanically, silently, his ancient eyes tracking every movement in the room with unsettling thoroughness.

"He’s not actually a child," Historia said, having been summoned by urgent letter and arriving two days later, examining him with the particular focus of someone drawing on inherited memory rather than simple observation. "Or — he is, biologically. But something’s using him. Speaking through him, the way the Founder once spoke to you in dreams, Eren, except cruder. Less controlled."

"Using him how?"

"I don’t know yet. But the name he gave isn’t random." Historia knelt before the boy, speaking gently in a language Eren didn’t recognize — old Aeldrin, he guessed, something predating even the walls. The boy’s eyes flickered toward her with something like recognition.

"Wo krenn ah selveth," the boy said, voice carrying an accent no six-year-old throat should have been able to produce naturally.

Historia went pale. "He said, ’I am not whole yet.’ That’s not modern Aeldrin. That’s the old ceremonial dialect, the kind only recorded in texts from before the first binding was ever performed."

Armin arrived within the week, notebook out before he’d even finished dismounting his horse, the old familiar fire in his eyes at the prospect of a genuine mystery worth solving properly.

"There’s precedent," he said, spreading ancient texts Historia had brought across the kitchen table, careful not to disturb the boy sleeping fitfully in the next room. "Two references, both obscure, both dismissed by later Aeldrin scholars as myth rather than history. They describe something called an ’echo-child’ — a vessel born, not chosen, when residual Founder resonance seeps into a bloodline with no formal binding to contain it properly."

"Seeps from where?" Mikasa asked.

"That’s the question I can’t answer yet." Armin’s brow furrowed. "The texts suggest it happens near sites of significant Titan activity — battlefields, binding locations, places where the Coordinate’s power was used at scale. Given the timing, given where he was found—"

"The cliffs," Eren said slowly. "Where I fought Zeke. Or the basin, where we bound the Anchorless entity."

"Either. Both, maybe." Armin closed the book, expression grave. "If residual power from either event settled into the land, and if a child happened to be born near enough to absorb it during gestation—"

"Then he’s not a threat," Ymir said, having arrived that morning with Annie, both sisters listening with careful attention from the doorway. She crossed the room and knelt before the sleeping boy, something fierce and protective already settling into her expression. "He’s exactly what I was, once. Something that happened to him, not something he chose."

The boy — they began calling him Tobias, a name Carla suggested after three days of him responding to nothing else — began speaking more over the following weeks, though never fully as himself. The ancient consciousness bled through in fragments, unpredictable, sometimes gentle, sometimes carrying warnings none of them fully understood.

"There are others," he said one evening, seated at the dinner table, eating soup with a child’s clumsy hands while ancient eyes tracked Eren’s every movement. "Not many. Not strong. But the land remembers everywhere power was spent carelessly. Some of us will keep waking, unless the wound is properly closed."

"The wound," Eren repeated. "What wound?"

"The one two thousand years of careless power created," Tobias said, voice slipping deeper, older, for just a moment. "Every binding, every Titan transformation, every drop of power spent in violence instead of care — it leaves a mark on the world itself, the way a wound leaves a scar. You closed one gap, with the girl who shares my name. There are others. Smaller. Waiting."

[Major discovery logged: Multiple potential "echo" anomalies exist. Estimated locations: Unknown. Recommend systematic investigation.]

"How many others?" Mikasa asked, dread evident in her voice.

Tobias considered the question with unsettling seriousness for a child his age. "I don’t know exactly. Enough that leaving them unaddressed risks the same thing almost happening again, slower this time. Quieter. Harder to see coming until it’s already too large to easily contain."

That night, Eren found Mikasa in the garden long after Tobias had finally fallen into proper, childlike sleep, the weight of the evening’s revelation settling heavy between them.

"Another arc," she said quietly, watching the pale flowers sway in the cool autumn wind. "I thought we’d earned the right to just live for a while."

"Maybe we have," Eren said, sitting beside her. "Maybe this doesn’t have to look like the last one — no countdown ticking toward catastrophe, no forced urgency. Just a careful, patient search for whatever else the war left behind, healed properly instead of ignored."

"You want to bring Carla into this."

"Not into danger. Into understanding, the way we’ve always tried to give her honestly, piece by piece." He took her hand. "But I don’t think we get to simply set this down, Mikasa. Not if children keep being born carrying fragments of a war we thought we’d finished."

Mikasa was quiet a long moment, weighing the weight of it against the peace they’d built so carefully over the past six years.

"Then we do it the way we did the treaty," she said finally. "Slowly. Deliberately. With people, not just power. And we don’t let it consume the life we’ve actually built, the way the first countdown nearly consumed you before you learned better."

[New mission detected: "Echoes of the War" — Objective: Locate and understand additional Founder-resonance anomalies. Timeline: Open-ended. No forced urgency. Proceed at sustainable pace.]

"Open-ended," Eren said, reading the notification with something like relief. "No forced deadline this time."

"Maybe it learned that too," Mikasa said, a small, tired smile finally breaking through. "Along with everything else it’s learned since we stopped letting it manipulate us."

He pulled her close, watching Tobias’s window glow faintly with the small night-lamp Carla had insisted on leaving lit for him, a strange, unexpected addition to their family settling slowly into place.

Whatever the coming search for the war’s scattered echoes actually required, Eren understood, holding Mikasa close beneath a sky finally free of any countdown’s cruel urgency, that they would face it exactly the way they’d learned to face everything worth facing.

Patiently. Together. And on their own terms, at last, entirely.
