Reborn in hell with a skill creation system

Chapter 56: The Seventh Kingdom

Cinderholm was not prepared for a king, the settlement had grown in Mael’s absence, not dramatically, but noticeably. Ash’s roots had extended the habitable zone by two blocks, growing shelters from the bedrock for the refugees who continued to trickle in from the Iron Courts’ collapse. The fungi farms had expanded, supported by Vesper’s symbiotic enhancement that accelerated growth beyond natural limits. Demons moved through the streets with purpose, bound to the network, their movements synchronized by Combat Intuition distributed through Soul Tether but there was no palace, no throne room.

Mael stood in the square, Echo at his side, and felt the weight of seven hundred minds pressing against his consciousness. The seventh node had integrated seamlessly, but it had changed the network’s texture. Where before the tether had been a web with Mael at the center, now it was something more distributed. Echo acted as a secondary hub, processing loyalty coefficients and covenant enforcement independently, freeing Mael’s attention for other tasks.

"You’re brooding again," Zara said.

She stood at the entrance to what served as their command center, a structure of fused slag and root that Mael had never bothered to name. Her shadow-armor had been repaired, the Spire-gold polished to a mirror finish, and she carried herself with a new straightness, as if the title of queen had settled into her shoulders even if she hadn’t claimed it.

"I’m calculating," Mael corrected. "The other six kings will have felt the throne’s activation. They’ll be assessing whether I’m a threat, an opportunity, or a temporary anomaly that will resolve itself."

"And which are you?"

"All three." He turned to face her, and through the covenant thread, he let her feel the complexity of his thoughts, not as a burden, but as an invitation. "The throne gives me a seat at their council. But it also makes me a target. The Control was the immediate threat, but the other kings have been ruling for centuries. They won’t welcome a newcomer who claims power by defeating something they couldn’t stop."

"Then we give them a reason to tolerate you."

"We give them a war."

Zara’s eyes narrowed. "Heaven?"

" Heaven has already classified me as Anathema. The Throne sent Hashmal to warn me, and when that failed, they opened the sky above Cinderholm. The only reason they haven’t moved decisively is because they’re still assessing the Control’s defeat." Mael gestured, and Echo projected an image into the air between them—a map of Hell’s layers, glowing with points of conflict. "But they’re mobilizing. Remnant’s information confirms it. The Host is massing at Layer 2’s boundary, preparing a crusade that will sweep downward until it reaches us."

"The other kings? They’ll see this as your problem. Heaven’s wrath directed at the seventh throne, not theirs."

"Unless I make it their problem too." Mael touched the map, and the glowing points expanded, showing incursions at multiple layers. "The Host isn’t just targeting me. They’re using my existence as justification for a general offensive. Every demon king who has ever been called unholy, every territory that has ever been marked for purification, Heaven is leveraging the chaos of the Control’s collapse to push for total victory."

Zara studied the map, her political mind working through the implications. "You want to forge an alliance. The seven kings united against Heaven."

"I want to forge a coalition. Kings don’t ally. They coordinate. Temporarily. Reluctantly." Mael smiled, sharp and tired. "And I want to be the coordinator. The demon king who doesn’t demand submission, but offers mutual defense. It’s messy. It’s inefficient. And it’s the only thing that will keep Hell from being conquered piece by piece."

"You’re asking them to trust a hatchling who became king in less than a month."

"I’m asking them to trust a system. A network that has proven it can defeat a Stage 5 threat without sacrificing its members. A model of power that doesn’t require consuming their territories to function." He paused. " if they refuse, I’ll show them what happens to kings who stand alone."

The summons came three days later.

Not from one king, but from all six, a rare coordination that suggested either unanimous concern or unanimous fear. The meeting was set in the Neutral Grounds between Layer 5 and Layer 6, a space that no single king claimed, where the air was thin and the gravity inconsistent.

Mael went with a small entourage. Zara, Seraph, Echo, and two of Kael’s best fighters. Not an army, a delegation, the network remained active through Soul Tether, seven hundred minds providing a background hum of support that made his physical presence almost incidental.

The other kings were already waiting, they had not come in person, that would have been too risky, too vulnerable. Instead, they projected avatars, constructs of soul and shadow that carried their presence without exposing their true bodies. Mael recognized them from the Architect’s Memory, from Zara’s descriptions, from the rumors that circulated through Hell’s layers.

The King of Gluttony occupied a throne of teeth and tongues, his avatar a massive figure of shifting flesh, constantly eating and regrowing itself. The King of Envy wore a thousand faces that cycled every few seconds, each one beautiful, each one screaming. The King of Wrath was a pillar of fire that spoke in explosions. The King of Sloth lay on a bed of clouds, barely visible, barely conscious. The King of Greed was a statue of frozen gold, identical to the Spire’s architecture and the King of Lust...

The King of Lust was the only one who appeared human. Or demon. A figure of androgynous beauty, seated casually on nothing, watching Mael with eyes that held genuine curiosity.

"So," Lust said. "The seventh returns."

"I never left," Mael replied. "I simply wasn’t seated."

Gluttony’s flesh-throne rippled with what might have been laughter. "A hatchling’s wit. Charming. But we did not gather to exchange pleasantries. We gathered because the sky is opening, and Heaven’s armies are marching, and the creature you defeated was the only thing keeping them cautious."

"The Control was not your ally," Mael said.

"No. It was our competitor." Envy’s thousand faces spoke in unison, a chorus of identical voices. "But it was predictable. It wanted order. Optimization. The same things Heaven wants, implemented differently. You, little king..." The faces cycled faster, showing expressions of disgust, admiration, hunger. "You want something else. Something we don’t understand. And things we don’t understand are dangerous."

Wrath’s fire-pillar flared. "Dangerous and useful. The Host fears him. That fear can be weaponized."

"The Host fears what he represents," Greed’s golden statue said. "Not what he is. He is Stage 4. We are Stage 6 and 7. Individually, he is nothing. But his network..." The statue’s eyes, solid gold, tracked to Echo. "His network is a new form. A multiplication of power that doesn’t require consumption of territory."
