Reborn in hell with a skill creation system

Chapter 43: The Searing Gardens (2)

"Can you free it?" Kael asked. Her bronze scales had dulled in the wet heat, but her Killer Instinct was still active, tracking threats in the glass reflections.

"Not the way I freed Vesper. This isn’t binding magic. It’s biological integration." Mael studied the tree, his Parallel Processing working through the anatomy of a plant that consumed demons to forge weapons. "The tree is using the prototype’s system to enhance itself. If I simply cut him free, the trauma will kill him. I need to replace what the tree is taking."

"With what?"

Mael looked at his faction, at Zara, whose loyalty coefficient had climbed to 0.89. At Seraph, bound by choice rather than contract. At Vesper, symbiotically merged. At Kael, Jor, Thess, Vorn, auxiliaries who had chosen to follow him into a furnace.

"With me," he said.

He stepped forward, into the tree’s shadow, and placed both hands on the charred trunk.

The reaction was immediate, the chains flared, wrapping around his wrists, and Mael felt the Garden’s hunger reach into him, seeking his system, his souls, his carefully cultivated architecture. Hollow Stomach activated automatically, not to consume but to exchange, offering his energy in place of the prototype’s, creating a bridge that allowed him to interface with the tree’s biology directly.

ANOMALY: Foreign biological system detected

Integration attempt: HOSTILE

Countermeasure: SYMBIOTIC OVERRIDE

Vesper’s resonance flooded through him, her symbiotic architecture translating between his system and the tree’s, turning hostile consumption into mutual exchange. Mael felt the Garden’s confusion, it had never encountered prey that offered itself as partner and in that confusion, he pushed deeper, he found the prototype’s mind.

It was not a consciousness like his own. It was shattered, fragmented, a thousand pieces of self held together by the system’s autonomic functions. But beneath the damage, beneath the years of absorption and pain, there was something intact. A core, a will.

I am Mael, he projected, using the same method he had used with Vesper, pushing the concept through the symbiotic bridge. I carry the Architect’s mark i offer partnership, release growth.

The prototype’s response was not words, it was an image, a memory of flight, of wings that had once carried it above the Gardens, before the tree caught it, before the chains. Freedom, not as a concept, but as a biological imperative.

I can give you that, Mael promised, not wings but freedom from this tree. A network to belong to, a purpose beyond consumption.

The prototype hesitated. Mael felt its assessment, its calculation, the same survival logic that had driven him since the egg field. And he felt its choice.

Acceptance.

The symbiotic bond formed, not with the clean architecture of Vesper’s integration, but with the jagged edges of damage and repair. Mael felt the prototype’s pain become his, its years of absorption translated into memory, its shattered system merging with his own in a cascade of data that overwhelmed Parallel Processing for a moment, then settled.

SYMBIOTIC BOND ESTABLISHED

Target: [NAME CORRUPTED] — Designation: ASH

Capability merge detected: COMBAT SYNTHESIS

Effect: Host can temporarily merge auxiliary skills into composite abilities. Cost: Soul expenditure proportional to synthesis complexity.

The chains released.

Mael stumbled back, his hands smoking where the white-hot metal had burned, and the prototype...Ash...fell forward into his arms, the tree shuddered, its metal leaves rustling in a sound like screaming, and the caged demons began to stir, sensing that the power source that had sustained their prison was gone.

"We need to move," Zara said, her voice sharp. "Now."

Mael didn’t argue. He lifted Ash, lighter than he looked, his body half-fused and charred and ran, his faction falling into formation around him, Soul Tether knitting their movements into a single organism of escape.

The tree screamed behind them, not metaphorically. The sound was metal tearing, a frequency that made the glass ground crack, and Mael felt the Garden’s wrath not the Sin itself, but the organism that served it reaching for them with roots that broke through the silica like spear tips.

Seraph dropped back, her porcelain skin glowing with the heat, and she struck the first root with hands that had become blades of concentrated force, Combat Synthesis, Mael realized, the new capability merging her combat intuition with Kael’s Killer Instinct through the tether, creating something neither skill could achieve alone.

The root shattered. But more followed.

"Gate!" Vesper shouted, pointing ahead. The obsidian ring had followed them, or they had run in a circle, or the Garden’s geometry simply didn’t obey normal physics. It didn’t matter. Mael poured souls into the gate, fifty, a hundred, whatever it took and the faces in the magma shrieked with delight as they fed the ring filled with light.

They dove through, Mael last, carrying Ash’s broken body, and emerged onto the basalt plains where the dry furnace wind scoured the glass from their skin.

Behind them, the gate sealed, and the Searing Gardens’ scream faded into the crackle of cooling rock.

They made camp in a cave of slag, sheltered from the molten rain by an overhang of cooled lava. Mael laid Ash on the stone floor and assessed the damage through the symbiotic bond.

It was worse than Vesper’s. Ash’s lower body was fused, the bone and tissue merged with tree-root architecture that couldn’t survive separation. His mind was shattered, held together only by the system’s autonomic functions and Mael’s own network support.

"Can you save him?" Zara asked.

"Not as he was." Mael placed his hand on Ash’s chest, feeling the faint pulse of the system fragment. "But I can save what he is. What he can become."

He used Soul Well, pouring energy into the symbiotic bond, and felt Ash’s architecture responding, rebuilding, adapting. The fused lower body didn’t regenerate, it transformed, becoming something else, a root-structure that could move, that could support weight, that could draw nutrients from the earth itself.

Ash’s eyes opened. They were not white like Vesper’s, not gold like Mael’s. They were rust-red, matching the metal leaves of the Garden that had imprisoned him.

"You," Ash whispered. His voice was multiple voices, like Vesper’s, but younger, less practiced. "You are the seed."

"I’m the host," Mael corrected. "And you’re part of the network now. Not as a prisoner. As a partner."

Ash stared at him for a long moment, then at the others, Zara, Seraph, Vesper, the auxiliaries gathered in a circle, watching with expressions ranging from curiosity to suspicion.

"Partners," Ash repeated, testing the word. "I have never had partners. Only the tree. Only the fire."

"Then learn," Mael said. "We have time. Not much, but some."

He sat back, his own body trembling with exhaustion, and checked his status screen.

HOST STATUS

Name: Mael

Tier: Lesser Demon — Stage 3

Souls: 2,210

STATS

STR: 150

AGI: 195

VIT: 220

END: 115

INT: 45

Skills Active: 10

Auxiliaries: 4

Symbiotes: 2

New capability: COMBAT SYNTHESIS

The numbers were growing. Not dramatically, but steadily and more importantly, the network was growing. Four auxiliaries, two symbiotes, a faction that had survived the Iron Courts and the Searing Gardens, that had killed a Matriarch and defied a Sin’s domain.

It was not yet a kingdom but it was no longer an experiment.

Mael closed his eyes, letting the tether carry him through his followers’ perceptions, feeling their exhaustion, their hope, their growing certainty that they were part of something that mattered.

Tomorrow, they would move again. Toward the Frozen Spire, or back to the Iron Courts, or deeper into Hell’s architecture wherever the Architect’s Memory led them but tonight, they rested. Tonight, they were alive and in Hell, that was victory enough.
