After the demonstration, Fu Mingxue braked to a stop.

"Mom, what do you think?"

Mrs. Fu was full of praise. "This is great! Not only will you be able to see your way home at night, but it’s also fast. And you don’t even have to pedal it yourself!"

"Your factory is full of talented people. This is incredible."

’From now on, won’t my daughter be home in just a few minutes?’

"Just what you’d expect from the engine factory. They really know their stuff."

Fu Mingxue beamed. "Mom, I’m the one who modified this. The talented and incredible person you’re talking about is none other than your daughter."

Mrs. Fu was stunned. "You’re saying you modified this?"

’No way.’

"Of course. Why would I lie to you? It’s the truth."

Fu Mingxue parked the bike.

Mrs. Fu stood there, taking a moment to process what she’d heard.

She didn’t want to believe it, but she had no choice. Just as her daughter said, there was no reason to lie about something like this.

"So, where does the power come from?"

"Don’t we have electricity at home? I just charge it when the battery gets low. It’s cheap—only about twenty cents for a full charge."

Mrs. Fu was at a loss for words.

’How much? Twenty cents a charge? How much would that be per month?’

’Maybe it’s better to just pedal after all.’

’It would save money and electricity, and she’d get some exercise.’

But then she remembered that her daughter’s salary was quite high.

’Spending twenty cents on a charge was probably fine, then.’

She sighed.

’Spending a little money was better than having her come home late in the dark.’

Then, another worry surfaced.

"But since you’ve modified it like this, what if someone steals it?"

"I only ride it between the factory and home. Who’s going to steal it? Besides, the factory’s security department patrols every day. There’s no way it’ll get stolen."

That put Mrs. Fu’s mind at ease.

"It’s getting late. How about I make you a bowl of noodles?"

Fu Mingxue was about to say no, but her stomach rumbled before she could speak.

"...Alright."

Mrs. Fu had heard her stomach rumble, too.

She immediately headed for the kitchen.

Meanwhile, Fu Mingxue went to check on the two little ones.

She saw they were sleeping soundly and came back out.

Mrs. Fu was quick with the noodles.

She had noodles left over from dinner, saved specifically for her daughter.

When Mrs. Fu brought the bowl of noodles over, Fu Mingxue sat down. "Mom, you even added an egg! Thanks, Mom!"

’It’s a blessing to have a mom.’

Fu Mingxue’s heart swelled with happiness.

Mrs. Fu rolled her eyes at her. "Why are you being so formal? Just because you’re educated now, you’re always thanking this person and that person."

"Alright, alright, I won’t say thank you anymore!"

Fu Mingxue ate the noodles her mom had cooked. They were absolutely delicious.

"By the way, Sister Wang from next door dropped some things off today. She brought a can of malted milk and a whole chicken, but I gave them back."

Fu Mingxue was surprised. "Why did she bring those things over?"

Mrs. Fu shot her a look. "Have you already forgotten that your husband saved her son?"

Her mother’s words jogged her memory.

"We’re all neighbors; why is she being so formal? By the way, how is her son?"

She’d been leaving early and coming home late these past few days, so she truly didn’t know how the boy next door was doing.

"Even though he was rescued that day, the water was freezing. The poor kid ran a high fever for two days, and on top of that, he came down with... what’s it called... pneumonia. It seems pretty serious. He’s still in the hospital."

Mrs. Fu sighed. "That poor child has really been through it. First falling in the water, then a high fever, and now pneumonia... I hope he gets better soon."
