Kalli made a disgusted face at the thought of the reprocessed nutrient paste that they were almost certainly being served. That stuff made the protein bars that you could get from random rewards look positively luxurious.

However, the fact that they had saved over three quarters of a million people, while Kalli had saved three quarters of a city block said that their assessment of "Below Average" was being incredibly generous in the First Trial.

"How did the other areas you passed by look?" She asked, trying not to think about the taste of nutrient paste.

"Honestly, not good. The three volcanos that erupted near you, according to satellite feeds, were the most dramatic of the geological phenomena, but far from the most destructive.

You see, the eruption to your north was the result of a massive earthquake just the other side of the peninsula, and the Zrandabi area, as well as northwestern Tehaquia, got hit by a fifty-metre tall wall of Tsunami water that hit at over three hundred kilometres an hour. The damage runs over thirty kilometres inland, and hit at least nine major population centres.

Then, there were the other earthquakes in the far south, though it appears the reconstruction of the area had already eliminated most of the buildings.

Everything from tornados to firestorms have ravaged the continent, and the only area that appears to have been spared was the far north. Though that’s questionable, as our readings currently say that it’s eighty degrees below freezing, which most people would consider a disaster in a different way."

The far northern tundra was not a forgiving place to live to begin with. But still, that level of cold was far beyond anything that they would normally see.

"So, while the majority of the continent has been consumed by the other world, everyone that survived has also been hit by repeated natural disasters, just to make their life a bit more difficult?

That Trial system is no joke." Kalli noted.

"Indeed. While we did quite well the first time, it’s unclear how we will be rated this time, as we hardly needed to adapt to the seasons at all, and our heroes have been mostly confined to the vessels, except for a few forays to shore to search for survivors."

Kalli nodded. "This will be a good chance for them. Make sure that they’re as heavily equipped as you can, and send them ashore to fight. Get them the System Points, and some experience, and they should level up.

That will help your score.

Oh, they’ll need to come to me for the System Points, unless you can complete the quests for them."

Kovalev laughed. "No, I can’t grant them points for the quests. However, the lead Ark can. There is an automated station on board where they can interact with the System to claim rewards.

It was one of our completion rewards."

"Damn, lucky. The closest that I got is that statue of myself. They can touch it to claim the reward."

The Captain looked a bit embarrassed, and Kalli laughed.

"You got the same thing, didn’t you? You just put it behind a wall so that they think it’s an automated panel, and not a statue of their glorious team leader."

"What can I say? It was too embarrassing to put a statue of myself out in the open when I’m not even the Fleet Admiral.

If it had come out looking like him, we probably would have been fine. Or even if it was the Marine Commandant General. People respect him. But I was a Naval Aviator, a Captain by rank, but not Captain of a large vessel.

Now, with the Strategist class, I’ve gained a whole new role in the public relations group."

"At least they knew and trusted you. I was a transfer student. The end of the world was my first day here at Marimgar Academy. Everything went to shit, and my class decided to just stay in the dorms and see what happened."

Captain Kovalev chuckled. "I have been officially informed that I am not to voice my personal opinions on the evacuation strategy of the Irashian Governmental Agencies.

However, I will say that it is good to see that you have survived here in the old capital. We encountered three of the bunker sites already, and all had been breached."

Kalli nodded. "We have a few of the survivors of a nearby bunker here. But that’s a long story you’re likely not interested in. Now, how did you want to do this? Are you on a timeline to reach a specific spot? Even a few days of your teams doing the missions here will be a huge gain for them."

"I think that we should spend some time here. It appears that your Class gives you a number of advantages that we don’t have.

For example, knowing that our new ships are actually spacecraft.

I don’t know how we didn’t see that, but there is so much about them that we don’t know, and haven’t managed to access, that we simply assumed that they were fully armoured and upgraded submarines.

They’re excellent at the role, after all."

"Well, there is no harm in using them that way, I suppose. They operate underwater, on the water, in the air, or in space. So, any place that you choose to occupy is fine. Plus, if your goal is to keep looking for survivors, it’s better that you don’t leave the planet just yet.

You can collect data from the operational satellites to aid your search as well.

The System will likely give you some extra points for that, now that you know you could have actually left, yet you continue to choose to help others.

Very heroic, really."

The Captain couldn’t help but notice her deadpan, almost mocking tone. "Yes, I suppose that it is, isn’t it? Assuming that Command feels the same way, once they realize that running away is an option."

"It’s really not an option. Running away, that is. Unless there is another inhabitable planet in our solar system that wasn’t there a month ago, you’re still just going to be orbiting the planet you abandoned, living eternity as refugees aboard an ark.

So, you might as well try your very best and save that for after your last ditch effort to alter the fate of humanity."

"You know, for someone who doesn’t strike me as a people person, you really do give advice like a proper hero."

Kalli gave him a slightly mocking bow that made Yara and their guests chuckle. No need to tell them that while she was awakened, even the System didn’t have thick enough skin to openly call her a hero.

She was just the Coordinator.
