Chapter 158: Thwarted Crossing
With a bit of a lull in the supply runs, Kalli made time to run up to the turrets and collect some completions.
The teams had been changed, so that others could have the opportunity to get all those easy points gunning down enemies with the turrets, but the kill rate remained fairly constant.
Not as high as it was when the actual air attack was underway, but still good enough.
Now she didn’t have to worry too much about the number of ammunition cases that she was sending out, but there were still grave concerns about whether the heroes could hold the wall.
Even if they rotated, you couldn’t ask the heroes to fight forever, and the suns were getting higher in the sky now.
A few more hours and it would be noon, the end of the first round of quests. But not necessarily the end of the first round of attacks.
At least, it wouldn’t be if they were fighting alone.
Eventually the Arks would be fully operational again, and they would be able to clear the battlefield once again, leaving the city safe for a moment.
But how many more monsters were in the area?
There were still the magma corrupted monsters out there, even if they weren’t following the other hordes to attack the city. So, any claim that they had ensured their own safety came with some conditions.
The radio crackled to life as Kalli returned to the hall of heroes.
{Coordinator, what is the situation in the city? Our sensors are having issues for some unknown reason. Do you need us to send reinforcements?}
Kalli frowned. She still had access to their sensors, and the satellite feed.
Had they done something to lock themselves out?
She wouldn’t put it past them, but for now, she would just answer their questions.
"{The situation is unstable but holding. We have reinforced the base, and we will be pushing the enemy away from the walls soon to give the heroes a break. What is the status on your power cores?}"
There was a brief pause, and then the voice responded in a professional tone that completely failed to mask the anxiety underneath.
{Temperatures were out of the critical range, and falling toward normal operating temperatures when the ships went offline. We’re broadcasting from a mobile radio unit.}
Kalli laughed for a few seconds before she responded. Now she understood why they couldn’t do anything, the ship’s computer was rebooting after the thermal overload shutdown, and all their systems were offline.
"{ I have good news for you. The ship should be back online within the next five minutes. The reboot cycle is the last stage of the thermal overload protections. It’s just checking for faults before it comes back online.
We look forward to seeing you back in action soon. One Ark to clear the field would be a welcome sight.}"
"We will assist as soon as plausible. Thank you for the advice, Coordinator."
Now, there was real hope that the town of Marimgar might actually manage to hold the lines right until noon. The thought was enough to bring a smile to Kalli’s face for the first time that morning.
Until they were ready, the heroes were going to be heavily pressed, though.
The Armoured Boars were getting better at making it to the top of the walls, and the nature mages couldn’t move the piles away fast enough to stop them from using them as a launch pad.
Which meant that the warriors were facing a constant stream of attacks on the wall, while the mages worked to destroy the ladders to keep the Swineherd Demons from reaching the lines, where they could cause real destruction that the less intelligent boars could not.
For a while, it was going well.
Then, a group of demons made the top of the wall and began to establish a beachhead.
That pulled heroes from other parts of the wall, and by the time that they were cleared, the number of boars in the other sections of the wall had doubled. From there on, they were looking at a losing battle, even with the Air Defence Batteries pounding the enemy forces to a fraction of their original numbers.
"Coordinator, the heroes are talking about falling back. We’re close to losing people, the healers can’t keep up, even with bandages."
"Give me two minutes."
{Kalkan Fleet, give me good news. We’re about to lose the wall.}
{We’re running, systems are at 20 percent and rising. I can give you one area clearance volley, but that’s it for another hour.}
{I’ll take it. As soon as possible.}
Seconds later, one of the ships lifted from its resting spot and moved to hover two hundred metres in the air. The ship hummed as its systems powered up, and then with one massive burst of light, the whole area, starting ten metres from the walls, was scourged clear of life, right to the forest.
The sensor feed said that they actually stopped at the tuber plants, and Kalli laughed as she realized they had calibrated their rescue to save the food just as much as to save the city.
But now they only had to fight off the enemies that were already on the walls, and the heroes could do that.
She hoped.
The ship seemed to drop back to the ground, as if the shot had taken more than it had to give, but Kalli was distracted from the feed as a very disgruntled looking Reggie ran in the door wearing heavy plate armour.
"Coordinator, I need a new shield and sword. New body suit too if you’ve got one."
That could only mean one thing. Reggie had died, and returned at the resurrection pod.
"Got it. How many more are coming?"
"At least a dozen. Most were already there, recovering. But they’re mostly the newer heroes, who advanced last trial. None of them got knocked back to level 0, but a lot went back to level one, and they’re really feeling the after effects."
Kalli nodded. "And you?"
Reggie smiled. "My team must have pooled points, because I’m back at zero points, but with my level still at eight and I didn’t lose any stats. Even though I didn’t have a hundred points to begin with."
So, that was an option?
The system’s group function was mostly just for organization, letting them do quests together. Kalli had never suspected that it could be used to pay the points for a resurrection. The natural assumption was that the pod only took from the person being brought back to life.
Kalli’s mind was spinning with the possibilities, but her hands were busy turning over a fresh rare grade sword and shield plus an Uncommon Grade heavy Armoured bodysuit to Reggie.
"The rare one seemed like overkill, but this one is a consolation prize from me. We can sort out the points thing later."
Reggie nodded. "I think that they might be fine if they spread it out. I had forty, so that’s only sixty more, spread nine ways, and we did take a turn on the guns. That was two completions, so they lost less than they gained today, as long as none of them ends up at the pods.
But I have to go."
"Run, go rescue your team, and make sure that they don’t end up on the losing side of this battle."
