Kalli winked at the girl. "If I could make missiles that didn’t need constant point spending to keep them loaded, I would definitely start giving out more heavy weapons. But keeping the helicopters flying is too fuel intensive, and they only get like fifty rockets for a point.

Fun, but not cost effective."

"We will make do with pulse cannons on armoured vehicles. Or, you could put them on motorcycles with sidecars."

That sounded... inadvisable.

Fun, but probably not safe.

Kalli opened the store to prepare the new vehicles, and found that the vehicle page automatically opened to two vehicles she had never noticed before.

One was a motorcycle with a sidecar platform that could mount a heavy weapon. The other was a hovercraft with a driver in front, and a gunner sitting slightly higher behind them. It reminded her of an ATV, if the wheels were replaced with gravity plating.

It was completely open, like the motorcycle, but it looked more stable as a weapons platform.

Though for 5000 points, it really should be.

"You’re doing the creepy smiling thing again," Sanchez noted.

"The System found me a good thing. The price is stupidly high, but I’m considering getting a few of them, just because we can. There are hovercraft version of quads, the off-road vehicles. They come with a heavy weapon mount."

The soldier smiled. "See, that smile really is scary. But who would be insane enough to actually use that in combat?"

"Reggie?"

"Point taken. More than a few of our warriors would love to zoom around the battlefield with a hovercraft and a machine gun. Maybe start with the armoured vehicles. Or are these ones cheap?"

"No, they’re five thousand points each."

Sanchez made a protective gesture to ward off any sort of bad luck that would lead to him spending that many points. They could definitely get by with a bunch of heavy weapons in the back of pickup trucks for that price.

There was nothing quite as "resistance army" as heavy weapons in the back of a work truck.

"What kinds of pickup trucks do you have? Something mana powered?"

Kalli shook her head. "Not at the low end. The armoured vehicles are mana powered. The cheaper vehicles are mostly gasoline. But there is an electric pickup truck. We could charge those in the city. They should be able to drive all day at the speeds we need around the base, right?

I wanted the armoured vehicles to protect the gunners.

But if the enemies are mostly in the distance, and can’t actually shoot back, I suppose it’s better to save the points for city improvements."

"And then you won’t have to teach everyone how to drive a new vehicle. I mean, I get that most of the students don’t even know how to drive a car, but it’s got to be easier than asking them to learn how to drive a hovercraft in an afternoon."

A few of the heroes laughed at the thought.

Marimgar was incredibly pedestrian friendly in the core area, so it was not uncommon for people to never learn to drive. Even if they gathered them together, they wouldn’t have an easy time finding enough drivers to move the whole population.

"Alright, I will get the pickup trucks, and then you find someone to mount the tripod mounts in the beds. They’re for sale as well, cheap. So, we will redneck it with Pulse Cannons in truck beds.

If that isn’t enough, I don’t know what will be.

Once those are made, I will go double the number of turrets as well. Then, I will get back to our design team here, and put up a few new buildings.

I get the feeling that the third trial is actually a short one, or that it starts hard and then turns random on us, so that we can’t just build up without a care in the world."

Kalli stepped outside, and purchased ten electric pickup trucks, which came out as the Marimgar Motors electric work trucks, a notorious marketplace flop that might not have sold as many units during its entire production run as Kalli had just purchased.

But they were built solid, and they had a long range.

Then, she purchased the tripods for the Cannons, and found that they came in a generic box, so they would mount themselves to the trucks, which was a huge relief to her. They didn’t have a lot of spare workers to be finding a way to bolt gun turrets to work trucks.

Then, the cannons were mounted, and they had ten new mobile heavy weapons platforms.

"There we go. They just need a little something."

Sanchez shrugged, but the Professor chuckled. "You know, we’ve likely got a bunch of stickers for the Academy around here. Give them a Marimgar Academy Maintenance vehicle sticker theme. Or Security, if you’re not feeling as humorous."

"Campus security with heavy weapons is funny to me."

"The only thing funnier would be if we had them stickered up for the shopping mall." Sanchez agreed.

Mall cops with Pulse Cannons? That might actually fit the whole ’apocalypse of a futuristic society’ vibe that they had going on after advancing the keep to a level 1 society.

"The decals can wait. Let the teams know that there are heavy weapons platforms, and that they need a mage to keep up with the mana requirements. We got a whole bunch of new ones just now, and it’s probably better that we don’t steal healers for this, no matter how good their mana regeneration is.

I’m going to go upgrade the wall now, and then I’ll be napping in my office, waiting on midnight, to see what comes for us next.

Or for the design team to show me a compelling reason that we should put up new buildings right away. Whatever comes first."

The trio took that as a hint that they should have some sort of plan ready before midnight. But they also knew that they needed the sleep, so they would most likely only study the available building designs in the data repository of the Arks today, and then make their recommendations tomorrow after the battle.
