Reincarnated As The Heroes Guide

Chapter 173: To Claim Territory

That thought, that their goal here was to force the system to recognize that this was Marimgar’s territory, and to establish themselves as more than an outpost in the middle of a hostile foreign world, stuck with Sanchez as he left the hall with a case of chocolate bars for the heroes.

It might not be nutritious, but Kalli had lots of them in the storage realm prepared in advance, and nothing raised spirits of tires heroes like a good chocolate bar.

But handing out chocolate was only an excuse.

The heroes who had been brought to the underwater base had been chosen by the government for their skills. Either before or after their awakening.

Among them, there had to be those who were qualified in city planning. Someone who could help the Coordinator with the planning and development. Kalli was a college student, a freshman at that.

Surely, someone with experience would be a boon, even if she could find the blueprints for better buildings in the Ark archives.

She put in so much work to keep Marimgar operating, there had to be something that he could do that would ease her burden. But it would also give him a chance to get to know all the new arrivals, so that they didn’t end up with a segregated force.

If the heroes of Marimgar held to their old alliances and social circles, the town would begin to fracture like a combined military force without an effective core leadership group.

Kalli could make up for some of that, but she was not on the battlefield, and did not give military orders under normal circumstances.

Someone had to fill that role, or they had to combine the force into a single cohesive unit.

Kalli was thinking the same thing.

Only she was not thinking of it in terms of military coordination, but as project coordination.

When you had multiple teams all working on the same software, the single most important group was the one that integrated all the disparate code into the main codebase and did the debugging.

Without them, everything began to fall apart, so the debugging team was never made up of the fastest coders, but the best problem solvers.

Those were who she was looking for as the heroes continued to come by and introduce themselves.

Everyone had turned in their quests, and now that everyone was waking up after their post battle nap, the new arrivals were eager to meet the one who had the gear to help them survive.

They hadn’t had time during the battle, but with some down time, it seemed like the perfect time for them to learn more about the city, and just how it was possible that someone could produce weapons and supplies from nothing.

If they had that sort of ability to start with, the underwater base most likely would not have fallen.

"Why does everyone call you Coordinator, Miss Kalli? Of all the titles that you could have, that seems like an odd one for everyone to settle on," one of the new arrivals asked.

"It’s actually the name of my Class. The System calls me Coordinator, so everyone else does as well. What class did it assign you?"

"I got Shaman. I’m specialized in healing, but I’ve got water and fire magic as well. The natural elements are my domain. But before all this I was the Head of Business Loans for Marimgar Municipal Bank.

That job isn’t really in high demand right now, I suppose.

I was only one of many healers in the underwater base, but my job got me a spot among the commoners. If there’s work here that I can do, I’m happy to do it. I saw the quest for four hours of skilled labour.

Apparently, it counts four hours of working as a healer, but only when it is outside of combat and not in a group.

The quest conditions are a bit confusing.

However, I’m happy to take on new responsibilities if it will give me daily System Points. I’m so close to getting another skill before the next wave."

Kalli laughed. "Then I have wonderful and horrible news for you. We need people with math skills to inventory all the armoured boar meat that we’ve collected, and the gear that is waiting for repairs.

If you know anyone with system assigned repair skills, send them to the tinkers, there should still be room for more workers in their shop.

We honestly need more of everything, including a city planner.

Actually, I will record everyone’s prior job and degree, plus your System assigned trade skills, if you have them. Keeping a full record of the heroes is becoming increasingly important, and that’s part of my job as Coordinator."

The banker smiled. "So, you’re the HR manager, Supply Sergeant, General Store Proprietess, and the Mayor, all in one? I do not envy your workload."

Kalli sighed dramatically. "You have a point. I need more stress relief in my life. But that’s where delegation comes in. Once I know what everyone can do, I can start assigning jobs. The third trial is a full on combat trial, so we won’t be getting too much other work done until it is over.

But when the time comes, we’re going to be doing a huge push to expand the city’s control over the region."

"So you have grand ambitions for Marimgar?" the banker asked.

Kalli shook her head. "I have an intense and overwhelming desire to not die. And only by doing the absolute best that we possibly can in the trials will that happen.

The more land that we take in the third trial, the better the reward, and the higher the chance that we will have a habitable homeland for the fourth trial, whatever that might be. Going by the pattern, it will likely be to improve the land that we have claimed.

The trials all seem to be related to the one before them, and our performance in that trial.

So, with this one being about claiming back territory while surviving assaults, it only stands to reason that we should be improving it next. And I have items in my store for that, as well as a stockpile of the tubers that we can plant.

It might not be the most varied diet, but they’re fast growing and high in nutrients.

If we can plant them and claim the territory from here to the shore, so we can fish, I think we’ll be doing fairly well. There is a bonus for everything within a fifty kilometre range, but I suspect that the System won’t give us a pass on the ocean portion, and we can’t hold that."

The banker’s grim laugh told everyone in the room that he completely agreed with her assessment. Their base had only been a bit further than that, and now they were here, saved only by the resurrection pod.
