Reincarnated As The Heroes Guide

Chapter 149: Beacons In The Night

They could see what was going on around Marimgar from the satellite feeds, as it was a relatively clear night. And that didn’t look good, but the pure volume of laser fire lancing out into the darkness suggested that the defenders were going to be able to hold out for at least a little while longer.

That gave them a bit of time to decide.

Kalli wasn’t too worried about it. They all had their own trials to complete, and she couldn’t go too far, as the hall of heroes was very close to the centre of the outer perimeter.

So, everyone had roughly the same distance to go to find her.

"Coordinator, I need ammunition. Ten cases if you can," Niall panted as he ran into the hall.

"Here you go. Keep up the good work."

It was horribly frustrating, knowing that everyone else in the city was fighting on the front lines, defending their territory against an enemy in the dark while you sat in a shop waiting for them to come to you.

Even the civilians who had level 0 status were out, pushing mana into the turrets before retreating.

Eight laser turrets wasn’t a lot, but they had well over fifty riflemen to supplement that, all of whom would be doing their best to keep the enemy well away from the outer walls.

Realistically, a fortified Keep was not suitable to modern combat.

But when it was one-sided, and you were using modern arms to defend the fort against primitive warriors? That worked remarkably well. At least so far.

They were only an hour into the defence when Kalli got the first update from the System.

{A Hero of Marimgar Has Been Elevated}

That was an odd message. Did someone reach level ten and get a special reward?

Hopefully, that was the case because they could use some good news right now.

The army was seemingly endless, charging across the tidal plains between the shore and the forest in a wave of dark scales. But they already knew that was likely to be the case, after seeing the voting.

Popular vote, over 1.2 million to 1423, the population of Marimgar.

So, there were a thousand of the monsters for every resident, and that was counting all the civilians. If the heroes were going to actually defeat this tide, they were going to have to eliminate somewhere around three thousand of the creatures each.

In the next 12 hours.

Without dying of exhaustion.

Each of the turrets would eliminate at most 360 enemies an hour. While that sounded like a lot, it would be reduced with every target that survived a shot, every miss, and any moments where the turrets were out of mana.

It wasn’t even close to enough firepower to take care of the enemy tide.

The defensive fortifications had seemed so impressive when she had placed them during the last trial, but against an army of a million, all trying to break through the defensive lines, it was just laughably bad.

But at least she hadn’t tried to save points by going with the shotgun turrets.

Then, the mages started to return to the hall.

"Coordinator, we need a quest turn in. I need the points to upgrade my skills, a new one unlocked when the third trial started." Gerry explained.

"What quest reward did you get?" Kalli asked, confused.

"Hero of Marimgar. You only need a thousand kills for it, and I have [Fireball]. I can get dozens of them at a time, and these things are relatively weak. There’s just too many of them."

Kalli smiled as 200 points were added to her balance, the bonus that she got for having someone complete a Nightmare Difficulty quest.

Mage after mage turned in the quest, and then ran out before she could ask any questions. Until finally she grabbed Nancy, the bottle blonde former cheerleader, to demand answers.

"What is the new skill that everyone got?"

"Oh, all the mages got a skill called [Survivor] which increases the area of effect of their spells by 50 percent. It should make bigger fireballs, and [Chain Lightning] will go from six to nine targets per casting.

The others have it available as well, but none of them have a thousand kills yet."

"Thanks, and good luck. Did you need anything while you’re here?"

"Only if you have artillery. There’s literally a million of those awful things out there, and they’re starting to use the corpses of the dead as a ramp to try to climb the walls.

The nature mages are throwing the piles back, but they keep rebuilding them."

"Alright, I will see what I can come up with. Artillery isn’t really a category that I have. But there has to be something."

"Let me know if you find something. I’m headed back to the lines. My group is warrior heavy, and they need me to keep the turret up."

"Go, go. I will figure something out."

The mage rushed out the door, leaving Kalli to sort through her store options looking for something that might possibly kill more monsters than a rifle.

There were simply so many that one at a time wasn’t a feasible rate.

There was a grenade launcher, but there were only fifty rounds in the case of ammunition for a point. It would cost too much to keep it supplied.

For a moment, Kalli considered calling the Kalkan Fleet to see if they could help. Only, when she checked the cameras in that direction, she found that their shields were completely swarmed by sea monsters, and the ships were nearly invisible, except for the pulses of energy that were blasting the attackers back off.

She quickly sent their bridge a message informing them of how to engage the thrusters to hover out of the water.

That would at least slow the stream of attackers.

But they might have been remaining in the water to get a higher kill count. They were within range of the quests, so they should be getting credit for killing sea monsters. They hadn’t had the advantage of quests for most of the trials, so getting at least one Nightmare Mode quest completion today would be huge for their heroes.
