Chase silently lit a row of candles for Ashley Grant in his mind.

’He’d never lay a hand on his own wife, so, Miss, you’ve had the honor of becoming cannon fodder. Best of luck.’

...

However, an unforeseen storm can appear at any moment, and a vile person can show up when you least expect it.

Halfway through their return journey, a low clap of thunder split the sky, followed by a torrential downpour.

’But the weather forecast said no rain, didn’t it?’

But the rain was already falling, and it wouldn’t have made a damn bit of difference even if they’d dragged the chief meteorologist out here himself.

Leona Grant and his entourage were stranded on an unnamed island for a day and a night.

Chase glanced at the president’s face, which was as black as the bottom of a wok, and knew the young miss’s days were numbered.

It wasn’t until after four in the afternoon the next day that the weather cleared, and they could finally fly home.

By the time they arrived home, it was completely dark.

The plane touched down precisely in the villa’s backyard.

Leona Grant, his expression grim, was the first to disembark. All the servants were gathered to welcome them.

His eyes swept over the staff, and his expression darkened further. "Where’s the Young Madam?" he asked the butler.

"To answer, sir, the Young Madam went out with the Young Miss," the butler replied respectfully.

’Fun?’

Leona Grant was furious. After the ordeal he’d been through for the past few days, they had gone out to have fun again?!

’And most importantly, Annabelle hadn’t even called me once?’

"Where did they go?"

"I’m not entirely sure," the butler replied, his head lowered. "They mentioned something about a party. The Young Miss asked the Young Madam to accompany her, so she went."

Leona Grant shut his eyes. ’Ashley Grant. It’s you again!’

’I fucking swear, you really take the cake!’

This incident made Leona Grant come to a decision.

’Beware of fire, beware of thieves, and beware of Ashley Grant!’

’Damn it, she’s always spiriting my wife away. If I didn’t know Annabelle’s heart belonged to Aaron Wyatt, I’d suspect those two were having an affair!’

Aaron Wyatt.

The mention of that name reminded Leona Grant of why he and Annabelle had argued the other day, and a wave of unease washed over him.

’I still have to apologize to Annabelle. The longer I drag this out, the worse it will get.’

’Better to just get the apology over with quickly!’

His face grim, Leona Grant skipped dinner, took a shower, and then waited for Annabelle to come home, all the while mulling over how best to apologize.

’...So much for skinning someone alive, huh?’

The clock struck ten-thirty.

Still, there was no sign of the two of them.

Leona Grant paced back and forth anxiously before finally tracking their location and going to find them himself.

...

Annabelle Linton and Ashley Grant were, indeed, at a party.

It was a singles’ party. Ashley Grant had claimed she was looking for a boyfriend, so a reluctant Annabelle had tagged along.

’It’s not easy being the wingwoman...’

It was fine at first, but as the night went on, Annabelle discovered the party wasn’t half bad. At the very least, the "resources" were plentiful.

’No wonder the youth of today love these kinds of mixers...’

Annabelle was naturally beautiful, and her simple style of dress made her look as young as a high school student. Plenty of guys tried to hit on her, but since she wasn’t single, she could only turn them down politely.

While she sat to the side watching Ashley go wild, she also had quite a few drinks, and before long, both of them were a little drunk...

Ashley’s good friend, Lucy Locke, was also there. The two planned on having a sleepover that night and invited Annabelle to join, but she politely declined.

The two parted ways at the entrance to the bar, and Ashley called a car for Annabelle.

Annabelle sat on a public bench near the bar, pinching the bridge of her nose. She’d had a little too much to drink, and her head was starting to ache.

The weather had been gradually turning colder, and a gust of wind blew past, carrying a distinct chill.

Annabelle crossed her legs, wrapped her arms around herself, and stared blankly at the ground, lost in thought.

As Leona Grant drove up, his eyes immediately fell upon her, sitting there on the bench.
