"I don’t know if he’s actually good to you."

Quentin Holland lowered his gaze, a pained look in his eyes. "But no matter what, he’s hurt you before, hasn’t he? There are so many other men in the world. Why are you so fixated on him?"

’...Because he sacrificed so much for me in our past life.’

’His sacrifices made up for all the ways he wronged me. And... his love changed me. That’s why I want to be with him.’

’But how could I possibly tell my senior brother any of this?’

Annabelle Linton looked at Quentin Holland earnestly. After a moment’s thought, she found another way to explain, her voice firm. "Because he risked his life to save me."

Finally, she added three more words: "More than once."

Quentin Holland watched her, and Annabelle Linton met his gaze, her own just as serious.

Her clear eyes were without a trace of guile.

Quentin Holland sighed. "Annabelle, we’d like you to join the clinic. It’s mostly our old senior and junior brothers here. Will you come?"

Annabelle Linton fell silent.

’Of course, I can’t,’ she thought. ’If I came here, I’d have to leave Lynton... and Leona Grant.’

"Senior Brother, I’m sorry, I..."

Quentin Holland sighed again.

...

When Annabelle Linton got back to the hotel, Leona Grant was already gone.

She called him, and Leona Grant picked up almost immediately.

Leona Grant’s magnetic voice came through the phone. "Hello?"

Hearing his voice, Annabelle Linton felt her entire body relax. She went into the bathroom and, while turning on the water for a bath, asked softly, "What are you up to?"

"At the office..." Leona Grant said, rubbing the bridge of his nose. He sounded apologetic. "Sorry, I had to leave without saying anything. Things just got busy at the office..."

Annabelle Linton smiled. She casually flipped on the TV and sank onto the sofa, not moving a muscle.

Her clear, gentle voice traveled through the receiver to his ear like a soft feather brushing against his heart, making it flutter. "It’s fine, I understand. And thank you for spending the day with me."

"You’re thanking me again..."

Annabelle Linton touched her forehead and gave an apologetic laugh. "Sorry, it’s a habit..."

"It’s fine." The sound of Leona Grant typing rapidly on his keyboard came through the phone. "When are you coming back?" he asked with a wry smile.

"Probably in two days. My senior brother’s clinic just opened, and I plan on helping out for a couple of days..."

As Annabelle Linton said this, Leona Grant’s heart inexplicably tightened.

’Quentin Holland said he came here for Annabelle Linton... Does that mean she’s going to join the clinic, too?’

"Annabelle Linton, can I ask you a question?"

"Of course."

Leona Grant picked up the coffee from his desk and took a sip, gathering his thoughts. "First, I want to make it clear that I’m not doubting you or anything, so please don’t take this the wrong way..."

Hearing him stress the point so much, Annabelle Linton couldn’t help but laugh.

’When did Leona Grant become so careful?’

’Though, she had a pretty good idea of what he was about to ask.’

’It’s about my senior brother, isn’t it?’

"Mm, I don’t mind."

"You and your senior brother..."

"He’s very good to me," Annabelle Linton said with a sense of resignation. "He took great care of me in the past, so I have a lot of respect for him. He sees me as a little sister, and I see him as a big brother. That’s all there is to it."

Leona Grant was silent for a moment, then chuckled. "Annabelle Linton, am I causing you trouble? Making you explain the same thing over and over again."

Annabelle Linton teased back, "As long as you know."

Leona Grant chuckled again, his gaze lost in the white steam rising from his coffee cup.
