He couldn’t believe it, nor could he accept it.

As this thought crossed his mind, he voiced it. "Annabelle Linton, is this marriage just a transaction in your eyes? An ordeal? If it weren’t for your brother, would we not even have had a chance to be together at all?"

He looked at her sadly, desperate to hear a different answer from her lips.

He hoped it wasn’t true. He hoped she would curse him, even hit him, and demand to know why he was so prone to overthinking.

But, in the end, it was just a hope.

Annabelle Linton stared at him blankly and told him the truth. "Yes. I never wanted to remarry you in the first place. If it weren’t for Ryan, I wouldn’t have done it. You save my brother, I remarry you. Isn’t that a transaction?"

Leona Grant scoffed, his sharp gaze sweeping over her. "And the ordeal? Because it was a transaction, because you remarried me against your will, it’s also torture for you, right?"

"What do you think?" Annabelle Linton glanced at him, her face devoid of expression, and let out a similar scoff. "Congratulations. You got it all right."

Leona Grant grabbed her arm, his fury surging. "Say that again!"

’If you’re good to me, I’ll be good to you.’

’You don’t even treat me like a person, and you expect me to greet you with a smile?’

In this life, in Annabelle Linton’s world, there was helplessness, but never groveling compromise!

She let out a few soft laughs, then said lightly, "Why don’t we go right now? We’ve only been remarried for a few days. It probably hasn’t even been filed yet."

"What are you trying to do?"

"Stop playing dumb. I refuse to believe you don’t understand."

’He knew what she meant, but saying it out loud made a bitter sorrow flood his heart.’ "You want to divorce me?!"

Pfft.

Annabelle Linton laughed.

’What does he mean, *she* wants to divorce *him*?’

’Honestly, when he first proposed this transaction, she hadn’t really treated it as one. She had even ridiculously thought they could make it work.’

’She knew it was her fault for thinking of another man while she was with him. Yes, she admitted her mistake, even though she and Aaron Wyatt had done nothing wrong.’

’But she never knew his male chauvinism could cause such a scene, nor did she realize she had such a low standing in his eyes.’

’Shouldn’t a marriage be between equals?’

’If they could never overcome these issues, then wouldn’t it be better to just separate?’

’If he wants to think she’s the one starting trouble, then so be it.’

Annabelle Linton gave a lazy nod. "Yes, that’s exactly what I mean. Let’s not waste any more time. The Civil Affairs Bureau is closed by now, so I’ll call someone to come over and process it. Let’s get this over with quickly."

’Waves of fury washed over Leona Grant’s eyes. So, she really did want to divorce him.’

’They’d only been remarried for a few days, and she was already thinking of leaving?’

’Was he that detestable to her?’

Tch.

’A transaction, is it? An ordeal, is it? A divorce, is it?’

’He had said it before! She was his one obsession he could never satisfy!’

’If they couldn’t be apart and couldn’t be together, then they might as well drive each other to exhaustion!’

’Fine, let’s destroy each other!’

He swept her up and threw her onto the bed. "A transaction, is it? Fine. I, Leona Grant, don’t make deals I lose on. Since it’s a transaction, let me get my money’s worth first. Annabelle Linton, if I don’t fuck you to death today, I’ll take your last name!"

Annabelle Linton gave a cold laugh, her face ashen as she closed her eyes.

Leona Grant pinned her beneath him. Looking at her expression of utter despair, his first thought, ridiculously, was, ’If I go through with this today, she’ll never forgive me!’

Shit, I’m so fucking hopeless. I’m actually thinking from her perspective!

He let out another cold laugh, then got off her. Straightening his clothes, he looked down on her from above.
