Chapter 490: Changed, Yet Unchanged
As if afraid of remarrying, Annabelle Linton slept for a very long time.
But that didn’t mean she would never wake up.
When she woke up again, her fever had broken thanks to the rest and medical treatment, and she felt much better.
It was nearly four in the afternoon by the time she sat down at the dining table to eat.
It was just her and Annabelle Linton at the entire dining table. Other than the clinking of porcelain, there was complete silence.
The two of them finished their meal in silence. Annabelle Linton didn’t eat much; between her habit of only eating until she was about seventy percent full and her lack of appetite, she barely took more than a couple of bites.
Watching her barely eat, Leona Grant couldn’t help but frown. She placed several helpings of food into Annabelle’s bowl. "You’re still sick. You need to eat more, or your body won’t be able to recover."
Annabelle Linton took her bowl back and ate another portion, as if she were completing a chore.
After she finished, she said flatly, "I want to see Ryan."
A self-deprecating smile touched Leona Grant’s lips, but her tone remained even. "Alright, I’ll arrange it."
’Even though we’re about to remarry, she’s still worried and needs to see her brother, the one saved at such a cost.’
’She doesn’t want to remarry. She doesn’t.’
’She knew.’
’But she has no choice.’
’She knew that too.’
In this whole affair, Leona Grant should have been able to look down on them with the smugness of a benefactor, making them beg her.
But instead, she had humbled herself... ’It must be because of that dream.’
’I don’t know if it was real or not, but it certainly didn’t come from nothing. Even in my dream, she was the one being hurt.’
’So, based on that alone, shouldn’t I do everything I can to make it up to her?’
...
She was able to see Ryan without a problem.
He was doing well. Being inside for just a few days hadn’t had a major impact on his life.
His school exams had apparently ended a few days before she and Aaron Wyatt were supposed to get married, so he was truly free now.
Everything was over. It felt like nothing had happened, but at the same time, it felt like everything had changed.
The person she was supposed to marry was Aaron Wyatt. Now, it was Leona Grant.
She and Aaron Wyatt were supposed to go abroad, but now it was him.
Ryan Linton sat across from her, saying quietly, "Sis, I’ve been thinking about studying abroad. I want to take Kiera with me. Could you arrange for some rehabilitation doctors for us? We’ll go abroad for her treatment..."
The door wasn’t locked. Ashley Grant was standing just outside the room and heard everything clearly.
’That’s right. This was the place where he’d given me the key, telling me this was our home.’
’But now, he was about to take another girl abroad with him.’
’It was almost funny. He’d just gotten out and had already made this decision. Had it been planned all along, or did he find out that I was the one who reported him and just lost all hope?’
’She knew something this huge had happened. Even if she wasn’t directly responsible, she couldn’t deny she was involved.’
’But I never thought he’d be so cruel—not even willing to listen to my explanation, just deciding to take someone abroad like this.’
’How should I put it?’
’I guess I was never in his heart to begin with...’
Tears welled in Ashley Grant’s eyes. She didn’t go inside, but simply turned and walked away.
Ryan Linton’s gaze drifted to the glass coffee table, where, due to the angle, he could see a figure’s reflection. A clear look of resignation flashed through his eyes.
"I can do that. But are you sure you want to go abroad?"
"Yes."
Ryan Linton’s eyes swept outside, a profound look in them. "I hear the medical care is better abroad. Kiera is seventeen, after all. No matter what, her leg was ruined because of me. Five years of fingers being pointed is enough. I just want to get her treated now. Sis, you have to take care of yourself when I’m not around, you hear?"
"Then when will you come back?"
Ryan Linton paused, then said expressionlessly, "I don’t know. I’ll come back when Kiera’s leg is healed."
